    Abstract Multivariate meta-analysis (MMA) is a powerful statistical technique that can provide more reliable and informative results than traditional univariate meta-analysis, which allows for comparisons across outcomes with increased statistical power. However, implementing appropriate statistical methods for MMA can be challenging due to the requirement of various specific tasks in data preparation. The metavcov package aims for model preparation, data visualization, and missing data solutions to provide tools for different methods that cannot be found in accessible software. It provides sufficient constructs for estimating coefficients from other well-established packages. For model preparation, users can compute both effect sizes of various types and their variance-covariance matrices, including correlation coefficients, standardized mean difference, mean difference, log odds ratio, log risk ratio, and risk difference. The package provides a tool to plot the confidence intervals for the primary studies and the overall estimates. When specific effect sizes are missing, single imputation is available in the model preparation stage; a multiple imputation method is also available for pooling the results in a statistically principled manner from models of users' choice. The package is demonstrated in two real data applications and a simulation study to assess methods for handling missing data.

    Abstract Recent years have witnessed the influence of the complex dynamic systems theory (CDST) in the field of second language acquisition (SLA). Thus, new research methods have also been introduced to meet the requirements of investigating the dynamic nature of learner-related factors including L2 affective variables. Among the innovative quantitative research methods which is compatible with the CDST is the idiodynamic method, the application of which is on the rise in SLA research. In this paper, an overall introduction to the idiodynamic method is presented first, followed by a review of the existing literature in SLA studies. Then, it is discussed why this innovative research method is suitable to investigate the dynamic nature of L2 learners' affective variables in the complex network of classroom learning. Also, several relevant research questions that can potentially be formulated and answered using the idiodynamic method are discussed. The paper ends with conclusive remarks on the need for more extensive use of innovative CDST-compatible research methods such as the idiodynamic method in the prospective SLA line of inquiry.

    Abstract Background: Mevalonate kinase deficiency (MKD) and TNF receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) are categorized as systemic autoinflammatory diseases (SAIDs), which are rare diseases characterized by early onset, severe conditions, and challenging diagnosis and treatment. Although different SAIDs have varying standard treatments, some SAIDs are poorly controlled after routine treatment, seriously affecting the growth and development of children and their quality of life. This study aims to provide more treatment strategies for SAIDs.
    Case presentation: We present two Chinese patients with MKD and TRAPS who were resistant to TNF- (tumor necrosis factor-) α blockade. After using etanercept, baricitinib, and glucocorticoid, patients with MKD and TRAPS still had periodic fever and rash. Due to the unavailability of IL-1 antagonists in the Chinese Mainland, we started administering intravenous tocilizumab (TCZ) at a dosage of 240 mg every three weeks. They had not experienced fever or rash after receiving one or two doses of TCZ. Before treatment with TCZ in the MKD patient, white blood cell (WBC) count, and TNF-α level were normal, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) increased significantly, and IL-6 increased slightly. After treatment with TCZ, ESR and CRP levels returned to normal; however, IL-6 increased occasionally. In the TRAPS patient, ESR, CRP, WBC, IL-6, and TNF-α levels were increased significantly. After TCZ treatment, ESR, CRP, WBC, IL-6, and TNF-α levels returned to normal. The two patients were treated with TCZ for more than six months and achieved clinical and serological remission. Furthermore, they had no adverse reactions after injection of TCZ.
    Conclusion: In the absence of IL-1 antagonists in mainland China, tocilizumab emerges as an alternative drug in SAIDs that are resistant to TNF-α blockade.

    Abstract The ability to precisely edit genomes by deleting or adding genetic information enables the study of biological functions and the building of efficient cell factories. In many unconventional yeasts, such as those promising new hosts for cell factory design but also human pathogenic yeasts and food spoilers, this progress has been limited by the fact that most yeasts favour non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) over homologous recombination (HR) as a DNA repair mechanism, impairing genetic access to these hosts. In mammalian cells, small molecules that either inhibit proteins involved in NHEJ, enhance protein function in HR, or arrest the cell cycle in HR-dominant phases are regarded as promising agents for the simple and transient increase of HR-mediated genome editing without the need for a priori host engineering. Only a few of these chemicals have been applied to the engineering of yeast, although the targeted proteins are mostly conserved, making chemical agents a yet-underexplored area for enhancing yeast engineering. Here, we consolidate knowledge of the available small molecules that have been used to improve HR efficiency in mammalian cells and the few ones that have been used in yeast. We include available high-throughput-compatible NHEJ/HR quantification assays that could be used to screen for and isolate yeast-specific inhibitors.

    Abstract As a major surface glycoprotein of enveloped viruses, the virus spike protein is a primary target for vaccines and anti-viral treatments. Current vaccines aiming at controlling the COVID-19 pandemic are mostly directed against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. To promote virus entry and facilitate immune evasion, spikes must be dynamic. Interactions with host receptors and coreceptors trigger a cascade of conformational changes/structural rearrangements in spikes, which bring virus and host membranes in proximity for membrane fusion required for virus entry. Spike-mediated viral membrane fusion is a dynamic, multi-step process, and understanding the structure-function-dynamics paradigm of virus spikes is essential to elucidate viral membrane fusion, with the ultimate goal of interventions. However, our understanding of this process primarily relies on individual structural snapshots of endpoints. How these endpoints are connected in a time-resolved manner, and the order and frequency of conformational events underlying virus entry, remain largely elusive. Single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer (smFRET) has provided a powerful platform to connect structure-function in motion, revealing dynamic aspects of spikes for several viruses: SARS-CoV-2, HIV-1, influenza, and Ebola. This review focuses on how smFRET imaging has advanced our understanding of virus spikes' dynamic nature, receptor-binding events, and mechanism of antibody neutralization, thereby informing therapeutic interventions.

    Abstract Video super-resolution (VSR) remains challenging for real-world applications due to complex and unknown degradations. Existing methods lack the flexibility to handle video sequences with different degradation levels, thus failing to reflect real-world scenarios. To address this problem, we propose a degradation-adaptive video super-resolution network (DAVSR) based on a bidirectional propagation network. Specifically, we adaptively employ three distinct degradation levels to process input video sequences, aiming to obtain training pairs that reflect a variety of real-world corrupted images. We also equip the network with a pre-cleaning module to reduce noise and artifacts in the low-quality video sequences prior to information propagation. Additionally, compared to previous flow-based methods, we employ an unsupervised optical flow estimator to acquire a more precise optical flow to guide inter-frame alignment. Meanwhile, while maintaining network performance, we streamline the propagation network branches and the structure of the reconstruction module of the baseline network. Experiments are conducted on datasets with diverse degradation types to validate the effectiveness of DAVSR. Our method exhibits an average improvement of 0.18 dB over a recent SOTA approach (DBVSR) in terms of the PSNR metric. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our network in handling real-world video sequences with different degradation levels.

    Abstract Background: Double-eyelid blepharoplasty was the most prevailing cosmetic procedures in China. To reduce the visible scar and unnatural crease after the removal of the OOM in the traditional full-incision double-eyelid technique. This research tried to introduce and promote the orbicularis oculi muscle sparing full-incision double-eyelid blepharoplasty with more conservative resection of upper eyelid soft tissue.
    Methods: The orbicularis oculi muscle sparing full-incision double-eyelid blepharoplasty was operated and evaluated in 227 patients (454 eyes), and the esthetic results, the satisfaction of patients and complications were scored and analyzed at 6-12 months postoperative.
    Results: Of the 227 patient, 164 (72.25%) patients were very satisfied, and 49 (21.59%) patients were satisfied, 14 (6.17%) patients were unsatisfied mainly because of the loss of palpebral fold or shallow folds. The average subjective scar score was 4.92 with 209 (92.1%) patients scored very satisfied, 18 patients scored satisfied. No patients experienced the eyelid numbness, dry eyes, and stitch abscess. 8 patients (3.52%) developed mild eye irritation in early postoperative period, however the symptoms resolved spontaneously in 2 weeks.
    Conclusion: The orbiculars oculi muscle sparing full-incision double-eyelid blepharoplasty contributes to the conservation of the physiology of the eyelid structure, producing a reliable, nature, dynamic double-eyelid crease with a light scar and less complication.
