Abstract Der Fuß, ein Meisterwerk der Natur.

Abstract Interfacial reaction and transport processes contribute crucially to the overall performance and impedance of electrochemical systems. The influence of the electrochemical double layer and the interfacial reactions on the impedance of lithium intercalation batteries is investigated with a modeling approach. Our generic theory for charge and electron transfer reactions at electrified interfaces and its simplified adaptation, a reduced interface model, are compared with the standard for electrochemical interface modeling, the Butler-Volmer ansatz, in terms of numerically simulated impedance spectra. Both of our interface models inherently provide significant impedance characteristics that go beyond the standard approach due to their theoretically consistent derivation. We discuss resistant and capacitive contributions of the double layer to impedance spectra and analyze the effect of strongly correlated interfacial dynamics.

Abstract We deduce a generic interface theory to describe charge and electron transfer reactions at electrified interfaces based on fundamental principles. Considering the contact between a solid electrode and a liquid electrolyte, the model allows the consistent determination of emerging electric fields and space charge layers at the interface. The interaction between charge transport and the electrochemical double layer at the boundary between the electrode and electrolyte is investigated. Time scales of interfacial reaction and transport processes are analyzed. Further, we present a reduced bulk model of the electrochemical interface, which allows us to incorporate properties of the electrochemical double layer as extended boundary conditions in transport models of lithium-ion batteries. Numerically less intensive, the reduced model builds a bridge between our detailed description of reactions at electrified interfaces and commonly used modeling approaches for electrode reactions. With both the full and the reduced model, we simulate the impedance response of an electrochemical cell.

Abstract U.S. college students are disproportionally affected by depression but typically do not seek help. To advance understanding of the role of health messages in shaping college students' help-seeking intentions, we used a reasoned action approach to experimentally investigate help-seeking intentions for depressive symptoms. Due to negative interpretation biases among those who suffer from depression, scholars have previously warned against attempts to decrease feelings of responsibility for one's depression in health messages. We tested the determinants of help-seeking intentions as a function of exposure to depression help-seeking messages that differed in responsibility cues. Findings revealed that in our sample low responsibility health message framing did not affect determinants of help-seeking intentions. We identified instrumental attitude (β = .53) and descriptive norms (β = .24) as determinants of intentions to seek help (R

Abstract Inflammasomes are filamentous signaling platforms essential for host defense against various intracellular calamities such as pathogen invasion and genotoxic stresses. However, dysregulated inflammasomes cause an array of human diseases including autoinflammatory disorders and cancer. It was recently identified that endogenous pyrin-only-proteins (POPs) regulate inflammasomes by directly inhibiting their filament assembly. Here, by combining Rosetta in silico, in vitro, and in cellulo methods, we investigate the target specificity and inhibition mechanisms of POPs. We find here that POP1 is ineffective in directly inhibiting the central inflammasome adaptor ASC. Instead, POP1 acts as a decoy and targets the assembly of upstream receptor pyrin-domain (PYD) filaments such as those of AIM2, IFI16, NLRP3, and NLRP6. Moreover, not only does POP2 directly suppress the nucleation of ASC, but it can also inhibit the elongation of receptor filaments. In addition to inhibiting the elongation of AIM2 and NLRP6 filaments, POP3 potently suppresses the nucleation of ASC. Our Rosetta analyses and biochemical experiments consistently suggest that a combination of favorable and unfavorable interactions between POPs and PYDs is necessary for effective recognition and inhibition. Together, we reveal the intrinsic target redundancy of POPs and their inhibitory mechanisms.

Abstract Interfacial reaction and transport processes are a decisive factor for the overall performance of electrochemical systems. However, existing models rely on phenomenological descriptions of charged interfaces, which yields no deeper insights. We present a generic theory to describe charge and electron transfer reactions at charged interfaces, which is applicable to different electrochemical systems, like fuel cells or batteries with liquid or solid electrolytes. In the present work, our general theory is adopted to the electrochemical double layer at the interface between a solid electrode and a liquid electrolyte. The model allows to describe the intercalation reaction in Li-ion insertion batteries as a two-step process, consisting of a first desolvation and adsorption and a second actual insertion step. It becomes apparent that a charging of the double layer acts as the necessary driving force for the charge transfer across the interface.

Abstract Background/objectives: This study aimed to examine racial and ethnic variations in national trends, past-year prevalence, determinants of major depressive episode (MDE), MDE-related role impairment and mental health (MH) services utilization in U.S. adolescents.
Methods: Data was extracted from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) from 2010 to 2018. A total of 137,671 nationally representative adolescents aged 12-17 were included in the study. Weighted temporal trends in the past-year prevalence of MDE, and MDE with severe role impairment were estimated both overall and by race and ethnicity. Weighted multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to assess racial/ethnic differences in determinants of MDE, MDE-related severe role impairment, and MH services utilization after adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, family structure, substance use, activity participation, and problem-solving group engagement.
Results: The prevalence of MDE and MDE with severe role impairment among U.S. adolescents has steadily increased, while MDE-related health services utilization remained low from 2010 to 2018. Racial and ethnic minority adolescents were more likely to experience an MDE, but less likely to use MH services compared to their White counterparts. Participating in school, family, community, or faith-based activities was significantly associated with lower MDE incidence. Problem-solving group engagement was associated with MH services utilization (all p-values < 0.05).
Conclusion: High prevalence of depression and low MH service utilization among U.S. adolescents remains a public health issue. Moreover, racial/ethnic disparities persist in MH and service utilization outcomes. Future research must investigate the burden and predictors of mental illness, and the factors influencing MH services utilization in diverse adolescent populations.
