Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the growth and survival of juveniles of the winged oyster Pteria sterna, culture in two types of baskets manufactured with local materials. These were ‘one floor baskets’ (OFB) and ‘three floor baskets’ (TFB), hung from two ‘long lines’ in two study sites, Ayangue and Palmar, Province of Santa Elena, Ecuador, over a five months experimental culture period. Environmental variables monitored included total particulate matter and its organic and phytoplanktonic fraction (chlorophyll a), temperature, and dissolved oxygen. Individuals showed an initial length, height (dorso-ventral) and thickness (inter-valvar) shell axis of 18.7 ± 0.32; 18.2 ± 0.29 and 7.4 ± 0.18 mm, respectively; and the soft tissue mass, shell mass and total mass were: 1.03 ± 0.04; 0.11 ± 0.005; 1.14 ± 0.04 g, respectively. At the end of the period, biometric and survival parameters were recorded. The individuals cultured in Ayangue using TFB showed increments in shell, soft tissues and total mass that were significantly higher than those from the OFB. Similar results, but with lower increments, were obtained by the individuals cultivated at Palmar site. The ANOVA II showed that the site, type of basket and the interaction between the two had a significant effect on the growth of the oysters. Survival exceeded 80% at both sites and for both basket types, but no significant differences were observed between site and basket type. Considering the growth and survival obtained for both types of baskets, we recommend the TFB baskets for winged oyster cultivation in these regions.

Abstract The pen shell Atrina seminuda is a target for a small artisanal Caribbean fishery; however, little is known about its biology. The length frequency distribution, biometric relations and reproduction of this species were studied in northeastern Venezuela. Using transects selected from among 360 stations a population was sampled monthly by SCUBA diving. An analysis of 1748 individuals showed a shell height (SH) between 4 cm and 23.6 cm, with an average of 16.7 ± 2.5 cm. For both sexes, statistical differences in mean SH were observed (analysis of variance F (1, 1113) = 69.538; P < 0.001); organisms larger than 22 cm were females, whereas those between 8 and 10 cm were males. Log-linear regressions were estimated for shell length (SL), total weight (TW) and adductor muscle weight (MW) as a function of SH . In all cases there were statistical differences between males and females, with males presenting positive allometry and females showing isometry. Mean SH at maturity for males (8.24 cm) was lower than for females (11.88 cm), and for sexes combined was estimated at 8.71 cm. Gametogenic activity was observed throughout the year, with two main peaks of spawning (April and August/September 2008). All this information is crucial for demographic modelling and stock assessment for managing this species.

Abstract We carried out growth trials on three size groups of the scallop, Euvola ziczac, during two short-term (34-36 days) periods at 8, 21, and 34 m depth in Cariaco Gulf, Venezuela, in order to evaluate the effect of environmental factors on growth. Growth was greater in juveniles (initial size: 20-22 mm shell length) than in maturing juveniles (30-40 mm) and adults (70-75 mm). Somatic tissue growth was more than two-fold greater in juveniles than in maturing individuals. Adult scallops showed losses of tissue mass. The first period (December-January) covered the transition from a stratified water column to upwelling conditions, with initial high temperatures and low phytoplankton biomass followed by lower temperatures and greater phytoplankton biomass. The second period (February-March) consisted of upwelling, characterized by low temperatures and high phytoplankton production. The greater growth of juvenile and maturing scallops during the second period, particularly at 8 m depth, was associated with the greater availability of phytoplankton, related to coastal upwelling. The first development of gonads in maturing scallops only occurred in the second period, associated with food availability, and the degree of development was correlated with the depth. Our growth trials, which were too short to permit the negative impact of the development of fouling, showed that the growth of E. ziczac was enhanced in the presence of abundant phytoplankton biomass.

Abstract The growth, survival and influence of environmental factors were analysed in two cohorts of cultured Pteria sterna in Ayangue Bay, Province of Santa Elena, Ecuador (tropical Eastern Pacific). Juveniles representing cohorts I and II (8.4 ± 0.54 and 5.0 ± 0.17 mm in dorso‐ventral axis) were deployed in November 2015 and February 2016, and grown in pearl nets suspended in a long line for 12 and 10 months respectively. The stocking density was monthly and bi‐monthly reduced during sampling of individuals to determine growth in dorso‐ventral shell axis, dry mass of shell, soft tissues and dry mass of fouling on shell. Water temperature, salinity, total seston and phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) were determined at the culture site. Results showed that P. sterna reached ~100 mm in length during the first year of culture. Although little negative influence of environmental factors was detected, high temperatures during the reproduction period can be the most negative influential trait. The highest tissue mass (6 g), which occurred at the 10th month of cultivation, as well as a high availability of spat by artificial collectors in the coastal waters, showed that the species can be considered a good candidate for aquaculture in the tropical eastern Pacific.

In the organisms, the variations of the biochemical composition of reproductive and somatic tissues in the growth permit to infer about its adaptative to environment. In the present study, we evaluate the changes observed in carbohydrates, lipids and proteins of digestive gland, muscle and gonad tissues of Perna perna and P. viridis, growing in suspended culture at Cariaco Gulf , Venezuela. The reproductive condition of both mussels and environmental factors (temperature, chlorophyll a and of the seston) were determinate. The results show that, in both species, the gonadic lobes showed the highest variations in the biochemical component. The variations in the biochemical components were direct explained by the variations in the gonad development and the food availability, particularly chlorophyll a for P. perna and total seston for P. viridis. The temperature was a negative factor ...

The effect of culture density on growth and survival of juveniles was studied in the scallop Lyropecten nodosus with intermediate hanging cultures in Golfo de Cariaco, Sucre state, Venezuela, from December 1993 to July 1994. Six spat-densities (7, 15, 30, 60, 125 and 250 scallops/nets) were evaluated. The initial shell height and dry mass tissue were 9.4 + 0.18 mm and 0.007 + 0.0026 g, respectively. The specimens were placed into pearl nets and suspended in a long line at 8 m depth. Growth patterns of somatic tissue were similar, but with different magnitudes and inverse proportionality to culture density. No effect of density was observed on survival. These results suggest that intraspecific competition of cultivated scallops cause stress, which affects growth but not survival. We suggest as ...

Titelübersetzung The professional wearing down or syndrome of welfare labor stress ("burnout") among health professionals in the city of Cordoba.
Abstract With the intention of quantifying what occurs, between the members of the equipment of health in the public and deprived scope of the city of Cordoba, the present investigation is carried out. Comparative cross-sectional design observacional on stratified sample of doctors and fisioterapeutas. The data collection was made by means of survey of car-reports of "Maslach Burnout Inventory" (MBI). 479 professionals were studied, 22.3% (107) they were Fisioterapeutas and Kinesiólogos and 77.7% (372) Doctors of different specialties. It is possible to be concluded that in the public scope, the values of emotional fatigue are in the published ranks, despersonalizaci6n and lack of personal accomplishment is smaller. Between the hospitals they do not differ significantly. In the General Hospital of the Provincial scope, the Burnout is similar to the one of other countries and superior to the one of both local. In the private scope the levels of emotional fatigue are significantly greater than in the public, in the Service of Emergency the values exceed the published ranks. Between Pre-Residentes, the stress levels are moderate and they do not seem to vary; the Burnout would be below the awaited levels. Stress average of fisioterapeutas and kinesiólogos is in moderate levels and is smaller to the one of doctors of the public scope of the city of Cordova, but comparable to the one of the clinical residents and. The specialists Legal Medicine of the Fiscal Public Ministry, present/display the highest percentage of syndrome of complete Burnout.

Abstract We conducted a 5-month experiment at Turpialito in the Golfo de Cariaco, Venezuela, to examine whether the previously reported more rapid growth of scallop Euvola ziczac in bottom compared to suspended culture can be attributed to more abundant or higher quality food resources near the sediment/water interface. The various body components (shell, muscle, digestive gland, gonad and remaining tissues) increased in size at a much greater rate for scallops maintained on the bottom, in partly buried cages at 5 m in depth, than in cages suspended at the same depth in the water column. Furthermore, survival was greater on the bottom. Food abundance and quality were examined by analyzing the seston collected in sediment traps at the sediment/water interface in the vicinity of the bottom cages and next to the suspended cages. Phytoplankton abundance (chlorophyll a) and the proportion of various fatty acids in the lipid fraction of the seston were similar on the bottom and in suspension. However, sestonic protein, lipid and carbohydrate levels, and the estimated energetic content of the seston, were higher on the bottom than in suspension, and probably contributed to the greater growth on the bottom. As the increase in the energetic content of the seston on the bottom compared to in suspension was less than the increase in growth (biomass) on the bottom compared to in suspension, and the evidence showed in previous studies above the negative influence of fouling and wave action in suspended culture, we conclude that the more rapid growth of Euvola ziczac in bottom than suspended culture is principally due to stress relative to suspended culture system.
