Abstract Abstract Climate change science has become an increasingly polarized site of controversy, where discussions on epistemological rigour are difficult to separate from debates on the impact that economic and political interests have on the production of evidence and the construction of knowledge. Little research has been conducted so far on the antagonistic discursive processes through which climate knowledge is being contested and traditional forms of expertise are being (de-)legitimized—whether by members of the scientific community or non-scientist actors. This corpus-based study contributes to previous scholarship on the climate science controversy in a number of respects. Unlike earlier studies based on the analysis of mainstream media articles, this paper interrogates a corpus of climate change blog posts published by scientists, journalists, researchers and lobbyists laying claim to core, contributory and interactional forms of expertise—as conceptualized within the third wave of science studies. Further, the corpus informing this study has been designed to reflect the complex and multivoiced nature of the climate knowledge production process. Drawn from five different blogs, the views represented are not confined to the two poles between which the entrenched dialectic of ‘alarmists’ versus ‘deniers’ is typically played out in the climate science debate. Following a systemic functional conceptualization of dialogic engagement as a means of positioning authorial voices vis-à-vis competing perspectives construed and referenced in a text, this paper reports on bloggers’ use of three lexical items (bias, dogma and peer review) to expose their reliance on (non-)epistemic values. Concordances and a range of visualization tools are used to gain systematic insights into the network of lexical choices that obtain around these items, and to gauge whether/how bloggers construct coherent authorial subjectivities in a bid to claim expert status and/or question the recognition of other players in the debate.

Abstract This work studies the cholera disease that invaded Spain from the end of 1853 to 1856. Focusing on socio-economic aspects such as the funding of the fight against the cholera disease, that fell on local authorities mainly, and the most important was the economic solidarity of many citizens. It studies the role of the “Juntas de Salud y Beneficiencia” as main instrument not only medical but also social. Social phenomena as the social-economic elite fled from the affected areas. And the influence of morality over health issues. At last, there is an analysis report of the official numbers of infected and deceased people, with the reasons that explain why they must revise upwards.

Abstract ABSTRACTThe study of the mechanical properties of 3D printed food is crucial for food personalisation. Texture impacts the sensory experience along the oral food consumption. This work aimed to investigate the mechanical properties of post-processed printed food samples with different porosity topologies (triangled-shape/squared-shape). Image analysis showed changes in the structure before and after post-processing. The mechanical properties characterised via 3-point bending tests revealed that triangle-shaped topologies presented lower strength (20% less) and higher flexural stiffness (≈20%) when compared to the square-shaped topologies. A qualitative comparison of the porosity topologies and their role in the stiffness of structures under tensile and bending loads was performed via finite element models. The flexural stiffness varied between the triangle-shaped designs (13–35%) but remained almost constant for square-shaped designs (40–43%). The results presented in this work showed that the mechanical properties of 3D-printed food could be modified by the selection of porosity topology.

Abstract In an analogous manner as occurred during the development of a connected metabolism that at some point reached characteristics associated with what is called "life"-due mainly to a catalytic closure phenomenon when chemicals started to autocatalyze themselves forming a closed web of chemical reactions-it is here proposed that cognition and consciousness (or features associated with them) arose as a consequence of another type of closure within the nervous system, the brain especially. Proper brain function requires an efficient web of connections and once certain complexity is attained due to the number and coordinated activities of the brain cell networks, the emergent properties of cognition and consciousness take place. Seeking to identify main features of the nervous system organization for optimal function, it is here proposed that while catalytic closure yielded life, neuroglial closure produced cognition/consciousness.

Abstract Our purpose is to address the biological problem of finding foundations of the organization in the collective activity among cell networks in the nervous system, at the meso/macroscale, giving rise to cognition and consciousness. But in doing so, we encounter another problem related to the interpretation of methods to assess the neural interactions and organization of the neurodynamics, because thermodynamic notions, which have precise meaning only under specific conditions, have been widely employed in these studies. The consequence is that apparently contradictory results appear in the literature, but these contradictions diminish upon the considerations of the specific circumstances of each experiment. After clarifying some of these controversial points and surveying some experimental results, we propose that a necessary condition for cognition/consciousness to emerge is to have available enough energy, or cellular activity; and a sufficient condition is the multiplicity of configurations in which cell networks can communicate, resulting in non-uniform energy distribution, the generation and dissipation of energy gradients due to the constant activity. The diversity of sensorimotor processing of higher animals needs a flexible, fluctuating web on neuronal connections, and we review results supporting such multiplicity of configurations among brain regions associated with conscious awareness and healthy brain states. These ideas may reveal possible fundamental principles of brain organization that could be extended to other natural phenomena and how healthy activity may derive to pathological states.

Abstract The role of life satisfaction as a determinant of pro-environmental behavior remains largely unexplored in the extant literature. Using a sample of undergraduate students, we explore the effect of life satisfaction on low- and high-cost pro-environmental behaviors. While low-cost pro-environmental behavior has been defined as recycling activities, high-cost pro-environmental behavior is defined in a contingent valuation framework in which respondents are asked about their willingness to pay extra for offsetting CO 2 emissions, thus avoiding treating the proposed payment as symbolic. Controlling for demographic characteristics and environmental concern, results suggest that life satisfaction has a slightly stronger, and more significant, effect on high-cost pro-environmental behavior than in low-cost pro-environmental behavior. This study also finds that environmental concern and having siblings with a university degree increases the probability of engaging in both behaviors. However, family income is a better predictor of high-cost pro-environmental behavior than of low-cost pro-environmental behavior.
