Abstract Dogs are the most popular pets worldwide; however, close contact with people increases the risk of transmission of different zoonotic parasites. This study aims to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in dogs in Slovakia. A total of 495 faecal samples collected from pet, shelter, guard, working (police), and hunting dogs, as well as dogs from segregated Roma settlements between 2016 and 2021, were examined using flotation and molecular methods. Eggs of intestinal helminths were detected in 134 (27.1%) samples. Microscopically, six different species/genera/families, namely, Toxocara canis (14.7%), Toxascaris leonina (1.6%), Trichuris vulpis (6.3%), Capillaria spp. (1.4%), Ancylostoma/Uncinaria spp. (8.3%), and taeniid eggs (4.0%), were recorded. Molecular analyses revealed infection with Echinococcus multilocularis in 2.2% of dogs and 0.4% of the animals were infected with Taenia hydatigena. The results showed a correlation between the occurrence of intestinal helminths and the availability of veterinary care, as dogs from Roma settlements and shelter dogs were the most often infected (66.7% and 39.2%, respectively). On the other hand, working animals were in the best health condition, with only 2.5% being positive. The relatively frequent occurrence of zoonotic species points to the constant need for preventive measures and regular deworming of dogs.

Abstract Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common diagnosis in older cats, and its prevalence increases with age. Conventional indirect biomarkers of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) have their limitations, and are not efficient in detecting early decreases in glomerular filtration rate. Recently, symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) concentrations have been proposed as a novel biomarker of GFR for the early detection of CKD. This study discusses the relationship between SDMA, FGF 23 and previously used indicators of kidney function, mainly creatinine, urea and phosphate. Ninety-nine cats were included in this study. Based on their SDMA values, 48 cats had CKD and the remaining 51 cats were used as a healthy control group. Serum of these cats was assayed for creatinine, urea and phosphate concentrations as well as FGF 23 values, and correlations between them were evaluated. Cats with CKD had higher FGF 23 concentrations than healthy cats, and no correlation was found between FGF 23 and SDMA, nor between FGF 23 and phosphate. On the other hand, phosphate strongly correlated with SDMA, urea and creatinine, making it a possible independent factor of CKD progression.

Abstract Background: Human toxocariasis is a cosmopolitan helminthic zoonosis caused by roundworms of the genus Toxocara. The study aimed at a cross-sectional analysis of seropositivity to Toxocara spp. in selected groups of population in Slovakia and an estimate of the risk factors of infection.
Methods: For the detection of anti-Toxocara antibodies, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) based on an excretory-secretory (E/S) antigen of Toxocara canis was used.
Results: The overall seropositivity to Toxocara in 1489 evaluated sera was 3.7%. The seropositivity of Roma children/young people (40.3%) was significantly higher when compared with all other analysed groups. Among adult respondents, the positivity of farmers and hunters (5.5% and 5.1%, respectively) was significantly higher (p<0.001) than in the other analysed groups (veterinarians and veterinary assistants, soldiers, students of veterinary medicine, and students of other universities). Analysis of infection risk factors showed that living in a rural locality, everyday contact with soil, and everyday outdoor activities (12.7%, 8.8% and 8.3% positivity, respectively) can increase the risk of infection, but the observed differences were not significant.
Conclusion: The results underline the importance of preventive measures and the need for improving of knowledge of toxocariasis among professionals, as well as the public.

Abstract Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite with domestic or free-living members of family Felidae known as the only definitive hosts of the parasite. The study aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in selected population groups in Slovakia and to analyse the infection risk factors. Totally 1536 serum samples of voluntary respondents were examined by EIA Toxoplasma IgG (Test-Line Ltd., Clinical Diagnostics, Brno, Czech Republic). IgG antibodies to T. gondii were detected in 322 (21.0%) sera, with the highest seropositivity recorded among farmers (42.5%) and hunters (28.5%). According to age, the highest seropositivity was recorded in 12-18-year-old Roma children (46.2%), what confirms increased risk of infection in this minority that often lives in inadequate hygiene conditions. When only adult participants were taken into account, the highest seroprevalence was observed in the age group of ≥ 70 years. Higher risk of infection (p < 0.05) was connected with cat ownership, living in rural residency and consumption of raw meat and meat processing. The results underline the importance of preventive measures and ongoing need to improve the knowledge on toxoplasmosis in both professionals and public.

Abstract Study objective: To develop a new decision tree system (DTS) for the management of adnexal masses in prepubertal and adolescent girls, aimed to improve the distinction between benign and malignant masses, help preserve affected ovaries during surgery, and reduce the rate of surgical management of uncomplicated functional ovarian cysts.
Design: A prospective diagnostic study using clinical and ultrasound data collected for all patients younger than 19 years of age with adnexal masses managed between 2006 and 2015.
Setting: Mother and Child Health Institute of Serbia 'Dr Vukan Čupić' (Belgrade, Serbia).
Participants: Patients (N = 1499) with adnexal masses, of whom 318 were surgically treated.
Interventions and main outcome measures: Ultrasonographic characteristics (Ueland's Morphology Index [MI] and the ovarian crescent sign [OCS]). Patients were managed expectantly or surgically, in line with 3 rules of the DTS. Rule 1: asymptomatic patients having a mass with MI of 4 or less and OCS present, were managed expectantly. Rule 2 (emergency): malignancy was suspected if the MI was 7 or more and no edema of the OCS was present. Rule 3 (nonemergency): malignancy was suspected if the OCS was absent and MI was 5 or more. The diagnostic accuracy was assessed using sensitivity and specificity (P < .05).
Results: No malignancy was found in the group of 1236 patients selected according to the DTS rule 1. Torsion was confirmed in 36% of surgically treated masses (n = 115). The OCS was present in 96% of benign masses in the non-emergency group (n = 149) and in three with microscopic malignancy. In predicting malignancy, the DTS (rules 2 and 3) showed a sensitivity of 93 (95% confidence interval [C.I.]: 82-98); and a specificity of 97 (C.I.: 95-99). Ovarian tissue was preserved from benign (n = 254, 93%) and malignant tumors (n = 3, 7%). Only five (2%) uncomplicated ovarian cysts were surgically treated.
Conclusion: The DTS with 3 rules is a very accurate diagnostic tool in the differentiation between benign and malignant ovarian masses. The DTS rule 1 reduces the number of surgical procedures on functional cysts, rules 2 and 3 are very useful in choosing the optimal treatment of adnexal masses, whether or not they are twisted.

Abstract A female patient aged 42, started chemotherapy for advanced ovarian carcinoma in June 2016. Considering intraoperative findings, cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) were performed, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. In March 2018, computed tomography (CT) examination showed disease progression in the form of pleural carcinomatosis with increased levels of tumor markers. In April 2018, total parietal pleurectomy, partial visceral pleurectomy, and then hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy (HITHOC) with cisplatin were performed. The procedure was uneventful, as was the postoperative course. The patient was discharged on the 13th postoperative day with no major postoperative complications. Three months after surgery, CT showed no signs of disease relapse. Since this is a relatively new method of treating pleural carcinomatosis, real results are to be expected with larger series of patients and longer postoperative follow-up.

Abstract Background: Benign ovarian neoplasms originating from epithelial tissue are common tumors in adult women. However, they are rarely seen in the pediatric population, especially in the first decade of life.
Case: We report a case of a 6-year-old, premenarchal girl, previously healthy, with frequent micturition lasting 3 days prior to the first examination, without discomfort or pain. Laboratory analyses of blood and urine showed no abnormalities. Repeated ultrasonographic examinations revealed bilateral, cystic, rapidly growing ovarian masses. Cysts were surgically removed, with preservation of normal ovarian tissue, and histopathologic findings showed a serous cystadenoma of both ovaries.
