Abstract Switchable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) change their structure in time and selectively open their pores adsorbing guest molecules, leading to highly selective separation, pressure amplification, sensing, and actuation applications. The 3D engineering of MOFs has reached a high level of maturity, but spatiotemporal evolution opens a new perspective toward engineering materials in the 4th dimension (time) by t-axis design, in essence exploiting the deliberate tuning of activation barriers. This work demonstrates the first example in which an explicit temporal engineering of a switchable MOF (DUT-8, [M

    Abstract Art. 012046, 9 S.

A commercially available carbon fiber (CF) with an epoxy-based sizing (EP-sized CF) and an unsized CF have been plasma treated to study the effect on the fiber-matrix adhesion towards a polypropylene matrix. The EP-sized fiber was chosen because of its predictable low adhesion in a polypropylene (PP) matrix. The fibers have been modified using a microwave low-pressure O 2/CO 2/N 2-gas plasma source (Cyrannusreg) developed at IWS in a batch process. One aim of this study was the evaluation of parameters using high energies and short time periods in the plasma chamber to see the effect on mechanical performance of CF. These results will be the fundamental work for a planned continuous plasma modification line. The CF surface was characterized by determining the surface energies, single fiber tensile strength and XPS analysis. The adhesion behavior before and after plasma treatment was studied by single fiber pull-out test (SFPO) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was shown that the CO 2- and O 2-plasma increases the number of functional groups on the fiber surface during short time plasma treatment of 30 s. Carboxylic groups on the unsized CF surface resulting from O 2-plasma treatment lead to an enhanced fiber-matrix adhesion, whereas the fiber strength was merely reduced.

Abstract We describe the formation of SiC nanopowder using an atmospheric argon microwave plasma with tetramethylsilane (TMS) as precursor. The impact of several process conditions on the particle size of the product is experimentally investigated. Particles with sizes ranging from 7 nm to about 20 nm according to BET and XRD measurements are produced. The dependency of the particle size on the process parameters is evaluated statistically and explained with growth-rate equations derived from the theory of Ostwald ripening. The results show that the particle size is mainly influenced by the concentration of the precursor material in the plasma.

    Abstract S.49-60

Using the LARGE (Long Arc Generator) plasma source, a long arc, forming a fan-shaped afterglow plasma with a width of 80 to 350 mm is formed at atm. pressure. In contrast to most point-form atm. plasma sources, the method offers an attractive means for pre-treatment of large surface areas. The reactive working gas formed by plasmachem. excitation can be used to activate or modify the surfaces of materials ranging from metals to polymers. In this article, the operation of the LARGE plasma source, the means by which coating properties can be modified and its use to deposit SiOx adhesion-promoting layers on metals are described. Of special interest were the optical properties and the morphol. of these deposits as well as their potential as adhesion-promoters in metal-plastic composite structures. Because of its very flexible stand-off distance of up to 60 mm and its compact construction, LARGE technol. is ideal for a wide range of industrial applications. These include coating of 2.5 D components, and formation of nano-structured SiOx layers for mech. and chem. bonding of epoxy adhesives to surfaces.
