Abstract Introduction: Patients with history of past or active malignancy are at increased risk of contracting the virus and developing Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) related complications. With the global prevalence of cancer and the high transmissibility of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), an understanding of the disease course of COVID-19 and factors influencing clinical outcomes in patients with cancer is necessary and is largely unknown. Aim: To study the laboratory characteristics of patients with malignancy and COVID-19 infection and to evaluate the outcomes in terms of clinical features, severity of infection and mortality of patients with malignancy and COVID-19 infection. Materials and Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional study conducted at Victoria Hospital, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, Bangalore, Karnataka, India, involving 72 subjects with COVID-19 infection. The duration of the study was from April 2020 to November 2020. Demographic details and data were collected in patients with active or previous malignancy and COVID-19 illness based on Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) criteria. Clinical outcome of the patients was measured based on need for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission, oxygen therapy and mortality. Descriptive statistics of the explanatory and outcome variables were calculated as mean, Standard Deviation (SD), median and Interquartile Range (IQR) for quantitative variables, frequency and proportions for qualitative variables. Inferential statistics like Chi-square test was applied for qualitative variables. Results: The mean age of the subjects was 52.10±14.512 years with 29 males and 43 females. Among 72 patients with malignancy, patients were classified as mild (23), moderate (22) and severe (27) according to ICMR case type, respectively. Among the total patients, 21 (29.2%) were asymptomatic and 51 (70.8%) were symptomatic with 26 (36.1%) symptomatic patients having severe disease. Also, 30 (41.7%) had requirement of ...

Abstract Oral cavity is nidus of much pathology. Some may arise due to altered eating habits such as meat, uncooked food etc. The parasitic infections arising from ingesting uncooked pork (larva of pork tapeworm) called as cysticercosis and being undiagnosed lead to “diagnostic dilemma”. Herein we report a case of cysticercosis involving the right dorsum of tongue along with review of literature.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the anxiety, depression, and serum cortisol level in OSMF patients.
Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Outpatient Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Teerthanker Mahaveer Dental College and Research Centre, Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Age- and gender-matched 105 patients were divided into three equal groups as follows: Group 1 - those with areca nut chewing habits and OSMF, Group 2 - those with areca nut chewing habits but no OSMF, and Group 3- those without areca nut chewing habits and without OSMF. Anxiety and depression were assessed by the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, respectively. Serum cortisol level was also measured simultaneously.
    Statistical analysis: Paired
Results: Fifty (47.62%) patients were observed to be in the age group of 25-32 years. Ninety-six (91.4%) patients were males and 9 (8.6%) were females. The mean serum cortisol level was observed to be higher among patients with OSMF-C followed by those with OSMF-D.
Conclusion: We conclude that there is a significant association between OSMF, depression, and serum cortisol level.

Abstract The study was designed to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of Anogeissus latifolia leaf and bark extracts byusing solvents viz. petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol. Hepatotoxicity was induced in Wistar rats byintraperitonial injection of CCl4 (0.1mL/kg/day for 10 days). The standard drug used was silymarin. Variousextracts were given in the dose of 300mg/mL of all the extracts except chloroform leaf and methanolic bark whichwere prepared @ 200mg/mL, for 14 days. The hepatoprotective effect of these extracts was evaluated for liverfunction biochemical parameters (total bilirubin, serum protein, alanine aminotransaminase, aspartateaminotransaminase and alkaline phosphatase activities) and histopathological studies of liver. Treatment withmethanolic leaf and bark extract significantly prevented the functional, physical, biochemical and histologicalchanges induced by CCl4 indicating the recovery of hepatic cells. The results suggest that methanolic leaf and barkextract of Anogeissus latifolia possesses potential hepatoprotective activity.

Abstract Cardiovascular diseases are becoming an increasing problem worldwide and hypercholesterolemia has been correlated for coronary heart diseases. Currently available hypolipidemic drugs have been associated with number of side effects. Herbal treatment for hyperlipidemia poses no side effects and is relatively cheap and locally available. In view of this, the present study was carried out to investigate the effect of gum ghatti of Anogeissus lalifolia on serum lipid levels of albino rats. Rats were made hyperlipidemic by the oral administration of cholesterol (400mg/kg body weight/day) along with cholic acid (50mg/kg) in coconut oil. The hypolipidemic effect was compared with control. The rats were divided into six groups of six animals each. In atherogenic diet induced hyperlipidemic model, the rats receiving treatment with gum ghatti at 250 mg/kg dosage showed significant reduction in serum triglyceride (82.75±0.63) only and there was no significant changes either in serum total cholesterol or elevation in HDL. Whereas, at 500 and 750 mg/kg dosage showed significant reduction in serum total cholesterol (72.85±0.60, 68.17±0.95) and serum triglyceride (78.92±0.34, 75.93±1.05). Further, the 750 mg/kg dose has also exhibited significant elevation in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (41.13±0.37).

Abstract Background: The present investigation evaluates the hepatoprotective and in vitro antioxidant effect of methanolic extract and its isolated constituent, dehydroabietylamine, in Carthamus tinctorious L, var Annigeri-2-, an oil yielding crop. Materials and Methods: The hepatoprotective effects were estimated for the parameters viz, total bilirubin, total protein, serum alanine amino transaminase (ALT) and serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and along with the pathological findings of hepatotoxicity. The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by using free radical scavenging assays: DPPH, nitric oxide radical scavenging, hydroxyl radical, reducing power, ferrous ion chelating ability and total antioxidant capacity. Results: Both the methanolic extract (at 150 and 300 mg/kg bw) and dehydroabietylamine (at 50 mg/kg bw) showed significant liver protection against CCl 4 -induced liver damage that was comparable with the standard drug, silymarin (100 mg/kg bw), in reducing the elevated serum enzyme markers. The liver sections of the animals treated with dehydroabietylamine elicit a significant liver protection compared with the methanolic extract against CCl 4 -induced liver damage. Further, both the methanolic extract and dehydroabietylamine exhibited a considerable and dose-dependent scavenging activity of DPPH, nitric oxide and hydroxyl radical. Similarly, in the reducing power assay, the results were very persuasive. In addition, the Fe 2+ chelating activity and the total antioxidant assay established the antioxidant property of the methanolic extract and its isolated constituent. Among the two experimental samples, dehydroabietylamine proved to be more effective for the said parameters. Conclusion: The potent antioxidant and its correlative hepatoprotective activity of the methanolic extract and isolated constituent dehydroabietylamine is therefore attributed to its antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities.
