Abstract Introduction Colorectal cancer is the most common gastrointestinal cancer treated by departments and surgical clinics in Poland. Currently, the biggest challenge of surgery is to reduce the number of leaks in the bowel anastomoses and postoperative wound infections to a minimum. Objective Whether bowel preparation before surgery affects the early results of treatment? Methods The study was retrospective and included patients operated electively on one surgical center due to colorectal and rectal cancer in years 2013-2018. Patients who underwent surgery were divided into two groups in the study. The first was 109 patients with mechanical bowel irrigation. The second group of 118 patients, in addition to mechanical bowel preparation, received an oral antibiotic. Results The studied groups did not differ significantly in terms of traits that could affect the results of treatment within 30 days of surgery. Postoperative mortality was 0,9% and 0,85%. Complications: leakage of the bowel anastomosis 1,8% and 1,7%, postoperative obstruction 3,7% and 5,0%, wound dehiscence 2,75% and 0,85%, infection of the surgical site 13,8% and 3,4% respectively in the first and second group of patients. Conclusion 1. Mechanical bowel preparation in combination with the oral supply of antibiotic significantly reduces the frequency of surgical site infection compared to the mechanical rinsing itself. 2. Type of preparation of the intestine before the surgery does not significantly affect postoperative mortality and other complications, including anastomotic leak, but may be important for the frequency of postoperative wound dehiscence.

Abstract Background: Cesarean delivery rates have increased globally resulting in a public health concern. We estimate rates of cesarean deliveries among Thai women using the World Health Organization (WHO) Robson Classification system and compare rates by Robson group to the Robson guideline for acceptable rates to identify groups that might benefit most from interventions for rate reduction.
Methods: In 2017 and 2018, we established cohorts of pregnant women aged ≥ 18 years seeking prenatal care at two tertiary Thai hospitals and followed them until 6-8 weeks postpartum. Three in-person interviews (enrollment, end of pregnancy, and postpartum) were conducted using structured questionnaires to obtain demographic characteristics, health history, and delivery information. Cesarean delivery indication was classified based on core obstetric variables (parity, previous cesarean delivery, number of fetuses, fetal presentation, gestational week, and onset of labor) assigned to 10 groups according to the Robson Classification. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with cesarean delivery among nulliparous women with singleton, cephalic, term pregnancies.
Results: Of 2,137 participants, 970 (45%) had cesarean deliveries. The median maternal age at delivery was 29 years (interquartile range, 25-35); 271 (13%) participants had existing medical conditions; and 446 (21%) had pregnancy complications. The cesarean delivery rate varied by Robson group. Multiparous women with > 1 previous uterine scar, with a single cephalic pregnancy, ≥ 37 weeks gestation (group 5) contributed the most (14%) to the overall cesarean rate, whereas those with a single pregnancy with a transverse or oblique lie, including women with previous uterine scars (group 9) contributed the least (< 1%). Factors independently associated with cesarean delivery included age ≥ 25 years, pre-pregnancy obesity, new/worsen medical condition during pregnancy, fetal distress, abnormal labor, infant size for gestational age ≥ 50
Conclusions: Almost one in two pregnancies among women in our cohorts resulted in cesarean deliveries. Compared to WHO guidelines, cesarean delivery rates were elevated in selected Robson groups indicating that tailored interventions to minimize non-clinically indicated cesarean delivery for specific groups of pregnancies may be warranted.

Abstract Background: Setting health-protective standards for poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure requires estimates of their population toxicokinetics, but existing studies have reported widely varying PFAS half-lives (T
Objectives: We combined data from multiple studies to develop harmonized estimates of T
Methods: We identified published data on PFAS concentrations in human serum with corresponding drinking water measurements, separated into training and testing data sets. We fit training data sets to a one-compartment model incorporating interindividual variability, time-dependent drinking water concentrations, and background exposures. Use of a hierarchical Bayesian approach allowed us to incorporate informative priors at the population level, as well as at the study level. We compared posterior predictions to testing data sets to evaluate model performance.
Results: Posterior median (95% CI) estimates of T
Discussion: These results have direct application in both risk assessment (quantitative interspecies extrapolation and uncertainty factors for interindividual variability) and risk communication (interpretation of monitoring data). In addition, this study provides a rigorous methodology for further refinement with additional data, as well as application to other PFAS. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP10103.

Abstract Objective: Introduction: Urinary incontinence should be treated as a pathology in patients who are at least 5 years old, a few percent of patients continue to suffer from this disorderin adolescence. It can be qualified as day-time incontinence (DUI) and nocturnal-incontinence (enuresis-NE). The aim: To assess the incidence of micturition disorders in children aged 7 to 10, to analyze accompanying symptoms and compare the results with previous studies.
Patients and methods: Material and methods: Parents of 954 children (491 girls and 463 boys) were surveyed during parent-teacher meetings held in 2017 in 11 randomly selected schools in southern Poland. The questionnaire was based on International Children's Continence Society guidelines. Study population was divided into subgroups according to demographical data, presence of accompanying symptoms and the type of micturition disorder.
Results: Results: Minor wetting was common in the studied population, however the group of children with clinically significant incontinence becomes smaller after applying current ICCS criteria. ≥1 symptom of urinary bladder malfunction was reported in 18% of cases (17.5% girls and 18.8% boys). Significant (≥1/month) NE was present in 1,7 % of children and significant (≥1/month) DUI in 2,2%. Significant NE combined with significant DUI occurred in 1% of children. Relationships between incontinence and the age at which children stopped wearing diapers, urinary tract infections, soiling and constipation episodes were observed.
Conclusion: Conclusions: Unified and clearly defined terminology should be used in order to correctly describe and compare the scale of this problem. Urinary incontinence should not be underestimated, because if untreated it may lead to physical, psychological and social disorders.

Abstract The aim of this study was to prepare a low porosity bulk sample with a fine-grained structure from an AlZrTi alloy. Nanostructured powder particles were prepared by mechanical milling of gas atomized powder. The mechanically milled powder was consolidated using spark plasma sintering technology at 475 °C for 6 min using a pressure of 100 MPa. Sintering led to a low porosity sintered sample with a bimodal microstructure. The sintered sample was revealed to be composed of non-recrystallized grains with an approximate size of about 100 nm encompassed by distinct clusters of coarser, micrometer-sized grains. Whereas the larger grains were found to be lean on second phase particles, a high density of second phase particles was found in the areas of fine grains. The microhardness of the milled powder particles was established to be 163 ± 15 HV0.01, which decreased to a slightly lower value of 137 ± 25 HV0.01 after sintering.
