Abstract Motivation: Studying the molecular heterogeneity of cancer is essential for achieving personalized therapy. At the same time, understanding the biological processes that drive cancer development can lead to the identification of valuable therapeutic targets. Therefore, achieving accurate and interpretable clinical predictions requires paramount attention to thoroughly characterizing patients at both the molecular and biological pathway levels.
Results: Here, we present GraphPath, a biological knowledge-driven graph neural network with multi-head self-attention mechanism that implements the pathway-pathway interaction network. We train GraphPath to classify the cancer status of patients with prostate cancer based on their multi-omics profiling. Experiment results show that our method outperforms P-NET and other baseline methods. Besides, two external cohorts are used to validate that the model can be generalized to unseen samples with adequate predictive performance. We reduce the dimensionality of latent pathway embeddings and visualize corresponding classes to further demonstrate the optimal performance of the model. Additionally, since GraphPath's predictions are interpretable, we identify target cancer-associated pathways that significantly contribute to the model's predictions. Such a robust and interpretable model has the potential to greatly enhance our understanding of cancer's biological mechanisms and accelerate the development of targeted therapies.

Abstract Most extant nutrition labeling studies examine how different nutrition labels affect consumers’ purchase intentions or how nutrition knowledge influences shoppers’ final decisions. However, most scholars have ignored that the channel of risk attitudes toward a food product may indirectly affect shoppers’ purchase intentions as a result of the health risk perception arising at the time of seeing nutrition labels. We empirically compare the effect of the Traffic Light (TL) label with the icon-only nutrition label on participants’ attitudes and health risk perceptions linked to their purchase intentions regarding a pizza product. The findings from the online experiment show that the TL label has a more significant effect on purchase intention than the icon-only nutrition label. However, this effect is different based on consumers’ health risks perception. Consumers with low health risk perception were more likely to purchase pizza, but those with high health risk perception decrease their purchases.

Abstract Background and purpose intracranial hemorrhage risk in patients with cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) after mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) was investigated. We searched PubMed and Embase from inception to 29 August 2023 for relevant studies, calculated pooled odds ratio (ORs) of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) subtypes in AIS patients with CMB presence, 1-4 or ≥ 5 CMBs versus CMB absence, and with different CMB locations after mechanical thrombectomy. ICH subtypes included any ICH, symptomatic and asymptomatic ICH, hemorrhage outside infarct (including subarachnoid hemorrhage), hemorrhagic infarction, and parenchymal hemorrhage after mechanical thrombectomy. Five eligible studies enrolling 2051 patients were included. No significant association was shown between CMB locations (lobar, deep, infratentorial or mixed) and ICH risk. CMB presence or 1-4 CMBs did not significantly increase the risk of any ICH, symptomatic or asymptomatic ICH, ICH outside infarct, subarachnoid hemorrhage, hemorrhagic infarction, or parenchymal hemorrhage. CMBs ≥ 5 increased the risk of any ICH (OR 2.58, 95% CI 1.16-5.72), parenchymal hemorrhage (OR 3.38, 95% CI 1.43-7.97) and parenchymal hemorrhage-2 (OR 5.33, 2.05-13.86), without increasing hemorrhagic infarction or parenchymal haemorrhage-1 risk. After adjusted for possible confounding factors, increases in CMB burden were associated with hemorrhagic complications but not with symptomatic ICH. In AIS patients who received mechanical thrombectomy, no association was shown between CMB location and ICH risk. ICH risk was not significantly increased by CMB presence or 1-4 CMBs. ICH risk in patients with ≥ 5 CMBs requires further study.

Abstract Background: Bone transport technique is widely used for the management of large segmental bone defects. However, several reasons may prevent its successful completion, such as poor osteogenesis, docking site nonunion, severe chronic pain and psychological problems. We used sequential nailing technique to solve these problems. The objective of this study was to analyze the clinical effects of our modified technique for the management of large segmental bone defects after trauma.
Methods: Twenty-three patients using bone transport combined with sequential nailing technique in our institution from June 2011 to June 2020 were included and analyzed retrospectively. There were 15 males and eight females. The age ranged from 19 to 64 years. There were eight cases suffering from basic medical diseases. The initial injury was open in 14 patients. Seven cases encountered femoral defects and 16 for tibia. The main reasons for sequential nailing technique were docking site nonunion (nine cases), poor osteogenesis (five cases), severe chronic pain (five cases) and psychological problems (four cases). The residual bone defects after removing the external fixator, operation plans, complications and follow-up time were recorded. Bone defect healing was evaluated by Paley score.
Results: The mean residual bone defects were (2.9 ± 1.9) cm. The mean time in external fixator was (9.5 ± 3.4) months. The average follow-up time was (23 ± 3) months. With respect to complications, two cases suffered from nonunion again and were treated by bone graft with augmented plate fixation. No infection recurrence was found in these cases. The excellent and good rate of bone defect healing was 91.3%.
Conclusion: Bone transport combined with sequential nailing technique could shorten the external fixation time, overcome the inconvenience of the external frame to patients, eliminate chronic pain and be easy for patients to accept. Patients using this modified technique achieved high satisfaction.

Abstract How to deal with large tibial bone defects is still controversial. The purpose of this research was to compare the semi-focal bone transport (SFBT) technique with traditional bone transport (TBT) technique for treating such patients. Sixty-two patients were included and retrospectively analyzed. In all cases, after radical debridement large tibial bone defects remained. Patients were treated by the SFBT or TBT technique. The distraction, consolidation duration and complications were recorded by the patients' medical files. Based on the Association for the Study and Application of Methods of Ilizarov (ASAMI) standard, the bone and functional results were evaluated. The mean bone defect size was 7.7 ± 1.6 cm and 7.5 ± 2.1 cm for SFBT and TBT patients. The mean external fixation index (EFI) was 1.51 ± 0.14 months/cm and 1.89 ± 0.25 months/cm for SFBT and TBT patients (p < 0.05), respectively. With respect to bone and function results, there was no significant differences between the two groups (p > 0.05). The mean number of complications per patient was 1.1 ± 0.6 and 1.6 ± 0.7 for SFBT and TBT patients (p < 0.05). Compared to the traditional bone transport technique, patients using the semi-focal bone transport technique achieved better clinical effects, including shorter EFI and less complications. Therefore, the SFBT technique could be a new option for patients with large tibial bone defects.

Abstract In this study, the direct impact of knowledge about the electricity pricing policies on residents’ electricity saving behaviour and the indirect impact of these pricing strategies on residential consumers’ fuel choices are analysed by adopting a traditional two-stage-least-squares model. Moreover, due to the different levels of affordability of energy, differences between rural and urban households are also examined. Estimations are based on an analysis of data from 3653 households from the Chinese General Social Survey of 2015. We find that energy sources with higher health risks – raw coal and briquettes – are more likely to be used in rural households than in urban households. However, our results confirm that applying for time-of-use (TOU) tariffs can help rural residents reduce their electricity expenditure, and thus increase their ability to consume cleaner energy – LPG instead of coal. Similarly, choosing TOU and possessing a higher understanding of tiered electricity pricing (TEP) significantly improves urban residents’ electricity saving behaviours. Urban residents with higher energy saving awareness are more likely to purchase energy sources with more convenience and less carbon emissions – natural gas instead of LPG. Finally, we suggest that more information on the TEP pricing scheme should be offered to rural residents to improve their energy saving knowledge levels.

Abstract Background: The frequency of thyroid cancer has rapidly increased in recent years globally. Thus, more papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) patients are being diagnosed, including clinical lymph node-negative (cN0) patients. Our study attempted to develop a prediction model for assessing the probability of central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) in cN0 PTMC patients.
Methods: A total of 595 patients from the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University (training cohort: 456 patients) and the Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical University (verification cohort: 139 patients) who underwent thyroid surgery between January 2020 and May 2022 were enrolled in this study. Their clinical and molecular pathology data were analyzed with multivariate logistic regression to identify independent factors, and then we established a prediction model to assess the risk of CLNM in cN0 PTMC patients.
Results: Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that sex, Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), tumor size, extrathyroidal extension, TERT promoter mutations and NRAS mutation were independent factors of CLNM. The prediction model demonstrated good discrimination ability (C-index: 0.757 and 0.753 in the derivation and validation cohorts, respectively). The calibration curve of the model was near the optimum diagonal line, and decision curve analysis (DCA) showed a noticeably better benefit.
Conclusion: CLNM in cN0 PTMC patients is associated with male sex, tumor size, extrathyroidal extension, HT, TERT promoter mutations and NRAS mutation. The prediction model exhibits good discrimination, calibration and clinical usefulness. This model will help to assess CLNM risk and make clinical decisions in cN0 PTMC patients.

Abstract Compaction of clayey aquitard would release pore water containing high levels of ammonium to adjacent aquifers, potentially affecting the concentration of groundwater ammonium. However, the releasing process and impact effect of ammonium within clayey aquitard during compaction remain unknown. Four groups of pre-experiments and two groups of simulation experiments were conducted to reveal the releasing mechanism of ammonium during clayey sediment compaction. (1) The results of Experiment A simulating continuous sedimentation conditions showed that the sediment ammonium transferred into pore water sequentially through desorption of ion exchange form, degradation of organic matter, and simultaneous release of mineral-bound ammonium. The concentration of pore water ammonium was 3.54-8.20 mg N/L, with a significant periodical variation due to sediment ammonium transformation. The lower moisture content (<42.4 %) in the later stage of compaction inhibited the biological transformation of ammonium, and the change in mineral structure caused the isomorphic replacement of K to capture ammonium, resulting in a decrease in ammonium concentration in released pore water. (2) The results of Experiment B simulating artificial compaction conditions (such as land subsidence) showed that the pore water ammonium was primarily caused by desorption of ion exchange form ammonium due to changes in pore structure and moisture content. The ammonium concentration in pore water was 4.72-9.91 mg N/L, with a significant increase in response to a large change in pressure in the short term. (3) The estimate results in the Chen Lake wetland suggested that the contribution of clayey aquitard compaction to groundwater ammonium concentration in the adjacent aquifer would be 2.68-4.29 mg N/L, which accounted for a considerable portion of groundwater ammonium concentration and was far higher than that of advection and diffusion. The findings of this study reveal the releasing mechanism of ammonium during clayey sediments compaction, in which reaction products may affect adjacent aquifers.

Abstract The mountainous region of the Haihe River basin (MHRB) plays an important role in the water resource supply of its nearby mega-cities, including Beijing and Tianjin, and large areas of cropland. With the implementation of afforestation projects in recent decades, vegetation and carbon (C) uptake have greatly increased in the MHRB. In addition, the annual runoff has significantly declined, threatening regional water security. The trade-off relationship between water yield and C uptake in the MHRB remains unknown. This study employed a biogeochemical model (Biome-BGC) to simulate the natural vegetation dynamics and gross primary productivity (GPP) during 1982-2019 driven by climate forcing. A distributed hydrological model (geomorphology-based hydrological model, GBHM) was adopted to assess the impact of vegetation restoration on the hydrological processes. The results indicated that the leaf area index in the MHRB increased significantly (P < 0.01) during 1982-2019, which led to evapotranspiration increase and runoff (R) reduction. Under the influence of vegetation restoration, both the GPP and the water use efficiency (WUE) increased significantly in the MHRB during 2000-2019, however, the improvement of WUE decreased with the aridity index increasing. Our results showed that vegetation restoration can improve C sequestration efficiency in the MHRB and that the trade-off between water yield and C sequestration should be considered in planning ecological projects to achieve C neutrality.

Abstract Groundwater is widely recognized as a source of lake materials. When it discharges into lakes, phosphorus(P)‑iron(Fe) geochemical reactions occur due to environmental changes, affecting P discharge from groundwater. However, redox kinetics of Fe and associated P geochemical processes at the sediment-water interface are not fully understood. Taking Dongting Lake as an example, this study explored Fe and P geochemical processes at the sediment-water interface under groundwater discharge with high Fe and P concentrations. We incubated sediments from Dongting Lake under anoxic-oxic conditions with different initial aqueous P/Fe ratios and pH. Aqueous PO
