    Abstract Objectives: Microbial contamination of various accessory parts of the dental chair units (DCUs) is an essential source of cross infection, while the accessories of the crucial suction function are usually overlooked. In this study, we aim to find an effective disinfectant and a cost-effective method to remove bacterioplankton and bacterial biofilm deposited in the negative pressure suction pipelines to control cross infection during dental treatment.
    Methods: Double-chain quaternary ammonium salt disinfectant (Orotol Plus®), 3% hydrogen peroxide solution plus multi-enzyme cleaning agent and chlorine disinfectant are used to clean and disinfect the negative pressure pipelines of DCUs. Microbiological examinations, air condition detection, corrosion tests and gene sequencing are performed.
    Results: Little bacteria grow in the pipelines disinfected with double-chain quaternary ammonium salt disinfectants, destruction of biofilms in these pipelines appears, and multi-resistant bacteria cannot be detected. Minimal damage to metal sheets and fittings is caused by double-chain quaternary ammonium salt disinfectants.
    Conclusion: Double-chain quaternary ammonium salt disinfectant has excellent bactericidal ability and anti-biofilm effect, and it is less corrosive to the fittings of the pipelines. Thus, the double-chain quaternary ammonium salt disinfectant is a potential novel disinfectant for negative pressure suction pipelines of DCUs to control cross infection during dental treatment.
    Clinical significance: It is essential to add all these data to our dental practice to control cross infection with a broader landscape.

    Abstract Background: Ossified spinal meningioma (OSM) is a rare form of a spinal tumor. The surgical strategies and pathologic findings related to OSM have been investigated in recent years. However, multiple OSMs are rarely reported. Here, we intend to present a rare case of multiple OSMs and review the relevant published literature.
    Case presentation: A 76-year-old woman experienced a progressive sensorimotor disturbance in her bilateral lower limbs for the past 2 years. She complained of inability to walk, urinary incontinence, and chronic constipation when referred to our hospital. A neurological examination revealed a diminished sensation below the bilateral T7, and her neurological status was Nurick Grade 6. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multiple intradural-extramedullary neoplasms at the T7-T11 level. Computed tomography (CT) scans showed five high-density masses of varying sizes in the spinal canal at the T7-T12 level. The patient underwent tumor resection through T7-T11 laminectomy. A histopathological examination revealed multiple OSMs.
    Conclusion: We reported a rare case of multiple OSMs in an elderly patient. After one-stage complete resection, the patient recovered with satisfactory curative effect. Although elderly patients will face various postoperative complications due to their poor physical condition, we still recommend one-stage complete resection of multiple OSMs to reduce recurrence.

    Abstract Traditional fibrous membranes employed in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) in the treatment of periodontitis have limitations of bioactive and immunomodulatory properties. We fabricated a novel nTPG/PLGA/PCL fibrous membrane by electrospinning which exhibit excellent hydrophilicity, mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In addition, we investigated its regulatory effect on polarization of macrophages and facilitating the regeneration of periodontal tissue both in vivo and in vitro. These findings showed the 0.5%TPG/PLGA/PCL may inhibit the polarization of RAW 264.7 into M1 phenotype by suppressing the PI3K/AKT and NF-κB signaling pathways. Furthermore, it directly up-regulated the expression of cementoblastic differentiation markers (CEMP-1 and CAP) in periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs), and indirectly up-regulated the expression of cementoblastic (CEMP-1 and CAP) and osteoblastic (ALP, RUNX2, COL-1, and OCN) differentiation markers by inhibiting the polarization of M1 macrophage. Upon implantation into a periodontal bone defect rats model, histological assessment revealed that the 0.5%TPG/PLGA/PCL membrane could regenerate oriented collagen fibers and structurally intact epithelium. Micro-CT (BV/TV) and the expression of immunohistochemical markers (OCN, RUNX-2, COL-1, and BMP-2) ultimately exhibited satisfactory regeneration of alveolar bone, periodontal ligament. Overall, 0.5%TPG/PLGA/PCL did not only directly promote osteogenic effects on hPDLSCs, but also indirectly facilitated cementoblastic and osteogenic differentiation through its immunomodulatory effects on macrophages. These findings provide a novel perspective for the development of materials for periodontal tissue regeneration.

    Abstract Background: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) collect and release data to the public every 2 years. The latest NHANES study on the vitamin D status of Americans was based on data from 2001 to 2014, and the latest data (2015-2016 and 2017-2018) have not been studied yet. Thus, we extracted all the available data from NHANES (2001-2018), aiming to analyze the prevalence and trends of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in the US population to bridge the research gap.
    Methods: According to previous studies and nutritional guidelines for vitamin D, severe VDD was defined as serum 25(OH)D levels of <25 nmol/L, moderate deficiency as 25-50 nmol/L, insufficiency as 50-75 nmol/L, and sufficiency as >75 nmol/L. We comprehensively estimated the prevalence of serum 25(OH)D levels of <25, 25-50, 50-75, and >75 nmol/L in Americans and described trends in vitamin D status from 2001 to 2018. Weighted multivariate linear regression models were used to explore the predictors of VDD. All analyses and the data were adjusted for the complex sampling design of NHANES using Mobile Examination Center (MEC) weights.
    Results: Based on the most recent data of 71,685 participants, our study showed that the weighted prevalence of severe and moderate VDD was 2.6% and 22.0%, and the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency (VDI) and sufficiency was 40.9% and 34.5%. The prevalence of severe and moderate VDD was higher in women, non-Hispanic black Americans, people aged 20-29 years, and during the season of winter. From 2001 to 2018, we found a slight linear decrease in the prevalence of moderate VDD (coefficient = -0.847;
    Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is still prevalent in the United States, especially in non-Hispanic black Americans, women, individuals aged 20-29, and during winter. Therefore, individuals, healthcare providers, and policymakers should take public health measures to develop and implement prevention strategies to deal with VDD.

    Abstract Objective: To compare the early clinical outcomes of ACL reconstruction using the augmented semitendinosus tendon combined with LARS synthetic material and the autologous hamstring tendons.
    Methods: A total of 68 eligible patients with ACL rupture were reconstructed using either 4-strand autologous hamstring tendons, representing the control group, or the LARS synthetic material augmented grafts. The duration of postoperative swelling and recovery exercise was recorded. Lysholm and IKDC scores were used for evaluation of knee joint function. Lachman and pivot shift tests were conducted to evaluate stability.
    Results: The scores of the three knee functions in cases of the augmentation group were significantly higher than those of the control group 6 months after surgery (
    Conclusions: The present study indicates that synthetic material augmentation grafts allow earlier return to exercise and display more satisfactory results compared with the control group.

    Abstract Background: Cognitive impairment among older people is an important public health problem in developing countries. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the subtypes of cognitive function among older people in China, and explore the transformation patterns and influencing factors.
    Methods: Longitudinal data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were used, and included 2140 women and 2049 men aged over 60 years. Latent profile and latent transition analysis (LPA&LTA) were used to identify subgroups and transitions between the profiles over time. Influencing factors were identified by multinomial logistic regression analysis.
    Results: According to the LPA model, three subgroups of cognitive function were identified: Cognitive Impairment, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Normal Cognitive Function. Concurrently, >50 % of participants were likely to progress to MCI after seven years, whereas participants with cognitive impairment had a probability of 54.2 % of transitioning to a better cognitive profile. Older adults are less likely to experience cognitive improvement, higher levels of education affect changes in cognition, and having depression are at a lower risk of cognitive decline.
    Limitations: Due to the incompleteness of the cognitive assessment and the large time span, there was a certain bias in the classification and analysis of latent cognitive profiles.
    Conclusion: This study identified three latent profiles among Chinese older people and showed the stability and heterogeneity. It demonstrated the effects of higher age or levels of education, and depression on changes in cognitive function in older people.

    Abstract Context: The relationship of lead (Pb) exposure with bone health in children and adolescents remains controversial.
    Objection: We aimed to investigate the association of blood lead levels (BLL) with bone mineral density (BMD) in American children and adolescents using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2005-2010.
    Methods: We analyzed 5,583 subjects aged 8-19 years (mean age, 13.49 ± 3.35 years) from the NHANES 2005-2010. BLL was tested using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the lumbar spine, total femur, and femur neck. Multivariate linear regression models were used to explore the association between BLL and BMD, adjusting for age, gender, race/ethnicity, poverty income ratio (PIR), body mass index (BMI), serum calcium, and serum phosphorus.
    Results: BLL was negatively correlated with BMD at different sites of interest in children and adolescents. For every 1mg/dl increase in BLL, the BMD of the total spine, total hip, and femoral neck decreased by 0.011 g/cm
    Conclusion: Our study indicates that BLL is negatively correlated with BMD at different sites of interest in children and adolescents aged 8-19 years, even in the reference range. More research is needed to elucidate the relationships between Pb and bone health in children and adolescents, including specific mechanisms and confounding factors like race/ethnicity, gender, and age.

    Abstract Objective: To investigate the values of Computed Tomography (CT) in diagnosing postoperative pancreatic surgeryabdominalinfection and its efficacy and to provide a reasonable method for the diagnosis of abdominal infection.
    Methods: Seventy-two patients who were confirmed as resectablepancreatic carcinoma by physical examination, CT, positron emission tomography (PET)/CT, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ER-CP), endoscopic ultrasonography and mesenteric angiography and were admitted to the Binzhou People's Hospital, Shandong, China, from July 2013 to July 2015 were randomly selected. The plain CT images and clinical data of the patients were retrospectively analyzed.
    Results: Among 72 patients, 32 patients were diagnosed as abdominal infection by CT, three patients were misdiagnosed (two cases of intestinal obstruction and one case of intraperitoneal abscess), and 2 patients were wrongly diagnosed as suppurative abdominal inflammation. As regards distribution of CT imaging positive performance, the number of patients with intestinal loop abscess accounted for 41.7%, subphrenic abscess for 16.7%, pelvic abscess for 33.3%, the existence of septation for 25%, and emphysema sign for 16.7%. As to the distribution of CT findings of intestinal obstruction, 46.1% of patients had dilatation of intestine, 30.8% for bowel wall thickening, 7.7% had abnormal enhancement, 11.1% had density abnormality, and 15.4% had mesenteric effusion. CT features of purulent peritonitis showed 57.1% of patients had peritoneal thickening, 42.9% had peritoneal effusion, 42.9% had free intraperitoneal air, 14.3% had intestinal walls edema, and 28.6% had mesenteric edema.
    Conclusion: The diagnosis of postoperative abdominal infection of patients with pancreatic carcinoma using CT is quick and efficient showing the pattern and distribution of collection and the gross reaction to the exciting infection.

    Abstract Objective: To measure setup error of head and neck neoplasm in radiotherapy and discuss over effects of error on physical dose acting on target region and organs at risk of nasopharynx cancer (NPC) patients treated with intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).
    Methods: A total of 152 patients who developed head and neck neoplasm and received IMRT were randomly selected. Through comparing digital portal image and digital reconstruction image, we measured setup error, calculated expanding margin from clinical target volume (CTV) to planning target volume (PTV) and analyzed whether there was rules between setup error and treatment time. Additionally, 20 cases of NPC were selected. Three-dimensional error was simulated in planning system. Dose distribution was recalculated and a series of dose parameters of target volume and OAR were analyzed.
    Results: Setup error in left-right, head-feet and ventral-dorsal direction was (-0.62±1.46) mm, (-0.41±1.54) mm and (-0.31±1.67) mm respectively. Regarding limit value, the maximum and minimum value in left-right direction, head-feet direction and ventral-dorsal direction was 2.70 mm and -6.00 mm; 3.00 mm and -5.00 mm, 5.00 mm and -7.50 mm. Expanding margin from CTV to PTV was 2.26 mm, 1.88 mm and 1.97 mm in left-right direction, head-feet direction and ventral-dorsal direction.
    Conclusion: During IMRT, only when setup error is controlled below 3 mm can sharply reduce the damage caused by radiation to normal tissue; therefore, quality security and control of electronic portal imaging device need (EPID) to be improved.
