Abstract Globally, malnutrition remains unacceptably high, and hard-won progress is further threatened by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Agriculture, with its critical role in the production, availability and consumption of food, as well as rural livelihoods and incomes, must step up to help address nutrition challenges. Nutrition-sensitive agriculture programs (NSAPs) are one way that agriculture can contribute to achieving our global nutrition goals. These programs also have the potential to help meet other critical development objectives, specifically women’s empowerment and shifting of underlying barriers that perpetuate gender inequalities.

Abstract Gender inequality exists everywhere, but it is particularly stark in fragile and conflict-affected settings (FCAS). Yemen, Afghanistan, Chad, Iraq, Pakistan, and the Central African Republic — all of which are considered extremely fragile and are affected by conflict (except Pakistan) — score the lowest on the Gender Development Index. The States of Fragility 2022 report also finds that the Gender Inequality Index is highly correlated with all six dimensions used to assess fragility, with 15 of 21 conflict-affected contexts facing high levels of gender inequality. The same pattern is shown by the Global Gender Gap Report — 72 percent of the countries ranked in the bottom quartile of gender parity are considered fragile, and a numt ber of countries affected by conflict, such as Haiti, Somalia, and South Sudan, do not even have sufficient data to be included in the ranking.

Abstract This chapter discusses the role of women in agriculture, and the ways in which their status affects the health and nutrition of their households. It highlights recent literature on the impacts of gendered and nutrition-sensitive agricultural programs. It also goes beyond a singular focus on women to consider the role of gender dynamics in agriculture and nutrition, and why the relationships between men and women are just as important for nutrition. Finally, it considers the ways in which agricultural research and nutrition-sensitive agricultural interventions can be designed so as to achieve better outcomes within nutrition and gender, and how these outcomes can be more accurately measured.

Abstract Since its launch in 2012, the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) has been widely used in USAID projects to prioritize and target activities that aim to promote women’s empowerment. It has been implemented in at least 37 countries by more than 200 partners and 60 different USAID operating units, offering valuable insights into the gender dynamics of agricultural production and identifying opportunities to enhance gender equality and women’s empowerment. By providing a more nuanced understanding of the challenges that women encounter in the agricultural sector, WEAI has played a crucial role in enhancing the ability of USAID programming to improve the lives of women and their families. This report presents key findings gathered from all reported WEAI use cases in the Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC), the largest resource for USAID-funded technical and project materials. A use case refers to a unique, real-world ex ample in which WEAI has been applied or utilized. A use case can demonstrate how WEAI has been used in a specific context or project, providing insight into its effectiveness, limitations, and potential for future applications. Together, these findings highlight the importance of WEAI as a tool for promoting gender equality and empowering women in the agricultural sector, while also providing useful insights that can inform future policies and programs.
