Abstract With the increasing Muslim diaspora in post-modern Western societies, Sufism - intellectually as well as sociologically - may eventually become Islam itself due to its versatile potential. Although Sufism has always provoked considerable interest in the West, no volume has so far been written which discusses this aspect of Islam in terms of how it is practised in Western societies. Bringing together leading international authorities to survey the history of Islamic mysticism in North America and Europe, this book elaborates the ideas and institutions which organize Sufism and folk-religious practices. The chapters cover: the orders and movements their social base organization and institutionalization recruitment-patterns in new environments channels of disseminating ideas, such as ritual, charisma, and organization reasons for their popularity among certain social groups the nature of their affiliation with the countries of their origin. Providing a fascinating insight into how Sufism operates within different spheres of society, Sufism in the West is essential reading for students and academics with research interests in Islam, Islamic history and social anthropology

Abstract Osteomyelitis, a severe bone infection, poses a multifaceted challenge to healthcare professionals. While its pathophysiology and treatment have been extensively studied, the impact of osteomyelitis on skeletal growth, particularly in pediatric patients, is an area that warrants attention. This abstract highlights the significance of understanding and managing growth disturbances in osteomyelitis, providing key findings and recommendations for clinicians. Understanding growth disturbance in osteomyelitis is essential because it can lead to lifelong consequences for pediatric patients. The infection may affect the growth plate, leading to limb length discrepancies, angular deformities, and functional impairments. These complications not only diminish the quality of life but also pose a substantial economic burden on the healthcare system. Therefore, early recognition and intervention are crucial. Key findings indicate that the risk of growth disturbances in osteomyelitis is particularly high in pediatric patients due to the vulnerability of the growth plate. Timely diagnosis, appropriate management, and targeted interventions can mitigate the long-term sequelae of growth disturbances. These include utilizing advanced imaging techniques to assess the extent of growth plate involvement, optimizing antibiotic therapy, and employing surgical techniques like epiphysiodesis, guided growth, or corrective osteotomies. Additionally, fostering a multidisciplinary approach that involves orthopedic surgeons, infectious disease specialists, and pediatric endocrinologists is vital to achieving successful outcomes. Recommendations for managing growth disturbance in osteomyelitis encompass early detection, meticulous monitoring, and a tailored treatment plan. Healthcare providers should remain vigilant for signs of growth plate involvement in osteomyelitis patients, especially in the pediatric population. A thorough evaluation, including advanced imaging and clinical assessment, is essential for accurate diagnosis. Close collaboration between specialists to address the infection and its skeletal consequences is crucial. Furthermore, patient and family education plays a pivotal role in fostering compliance with the treatment regimen. In conclusion, understanding and managing growth disturbances in osteomyelitis is paramount, particularly in pediatric patients. The implications of growth plate involvement are significant, and timely intervention is essential to prevent lifelong consequences. By implementing a comprehensive approach that combines accurate diagnosis, multidisciplinary collaboration, and patient education, healthcare professionals can enhance the quality of life and well-being of those affected by this challenging condition.

Abstract Context: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted clinical research in many medical and surgical fields, resulting in research waste and loss of treatment for patients. Although other areas have been explored, the extent of the pandemic's influence on osteoarthritis (OA) trials is currently unknown.
Objectives: This study aims to explore the reasons for termination of clinical trials investigating OA during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: We searched ClinicalTrials.gov for OA trials and characterized their reason for discontinuation, noting where trialists directly cited the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for trial discontinuation. We also coded other common reasons for trial discontinuation. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed to determine the difference in enrollment, funding source, trial phase, allocation, and intervention type between the trials terminated early due to pandemic and nonpandemic reasons.
Results: Out of 135 clinical trials, 119 were included and 27 (22.7 %) of them reported the COVID-19 pandemic as a primary reason for discontinuation, which was the overall most common reason for OA trial discontinuation during the study period. We found statistically significant differences for trials discontinued due to pandemic vs. non-pandemic-related reasons, with trials having sites outside the United States, randomized allocation, and drug or device intervention type being most affected. However, there was no statistically significant difference between groups regarding trial phase, funding source, or enrollment.
Conclusions: This study highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the clinical trials related to OA. We found that many trials reported discontinuation directly due to the pandemic, which may lead to the loss or delay of novel treatments for OA. To avoid such discontinuation in the future, alternative methods for conducting OA-related clinical trials should be explored and implemented.

Abstract Dual photocatalysis and nickel catalysis can effect cross-coupling under mild conditions, but little is known about the in situ kinetics of this class of reactions. We report a comprehensive kinetic examination of a model carboxylate O-arylation, comparing a state-of-the-art homogeneous photocatalyst (Ir(ppy)₃) with a competitive heterogeneous photocatalyst (graphitic carbon nitride). Experimental conditions were adjusted such that the nickel catalytic cycle is saturated with excited photocatalyst. This approach was designed to remove the role of the photocatalyst, by which only the intrinsic behaviors of the nickel catalytic cycles are observed. The two reactions did not display identical kinetics. Ir(ppy)₃ deactivates the nickel catalytic cycle and creates more dehalogenated side product. Kinetic data for the reaction using Ir(ppy)₃ supports a turnover-limiting reductive elimination. Graphitic carbon nitride gave higher selectivity, even at high photocatalyst-to-nickel ratios. The heterogeneous reaction also showed a rate dependence on aryl halide, indicating that oxidative addition plays a role in rate determination. The results argue against the current mechanistic hypothesis, which states that the photocatalyst is only involved to trigger reductive elimination.
