    Abstract Abstract Transcranial Doppler (TCD) is an easy, non-invasive, and real-time monitoring device for detecting right-to-left shunts (RLS). Nonetheless, it has limited benefits in patients with poor temporal windows. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether the basilar artery (BA) window was as effective as the middle cerebral artery (MCA) in detecting RLS during TCD monitoring. Overall, we enrolled 344 patients with stroke, transient ischemic attack, headache, or dizziness. MCA and BA were monitored using a modified headset. To investigate the feasibility of the suboccipital window in detecting RLS, we instituted an evaluation tool with three tiers to evaluate microembolic signals (MESs) during TCD monitoring. Tier 1: TCD monitoring of the MCA (bilaterally) in the resting state, tier 2: TCD monitoring of the MCA (bilaterally) while performing the Valsalva maneuver, and tier 3: TCD monitoring of the index MCA and BA while performing the Valsalva maneuver. In tiers 2 and 3, a high agreement rate of 0.808 and 0.809 (p < 0.001), respectively, on the weighted kappa index, and a high intra-class correlation coefficient of 0.982 and 0.986 (p < 0.001), respectively, were observed on detecting MESs. Our data suggests that the BA window is as effective as the MCA window for detecting RLS on TCD.

    Abstract Various Hamiltonian simulation algorithms have been proposed to efficiently study the dynamics of quantum systems on a quantum computer. The existing algorithms generally approximate the time evolution operators, which may need a deep quantum circuit that is beyond the capability of near-term noisy quantum devices. Here, focusing on the time evolution of a fixed input quantum state, we propose an adaptive approach to construct a low-depth time evolution circuit. By introducing a measurable quantifier that characterizes the simulation error, we use an adaptive strategy to learn the shallow quantum circuit that minimizes that error. We numerically test the adaptive method with electronic Hamiltonians of the H_{2}O and H_{4} molecules, and the transverse field Ising model with random coefficients. Compared to the first-order Suzuki-Trotter product formula, our method can significantly reduce the circuit depth (specifically the number of two-qubit gates) by around two orders while maintaining the simulation accuracy. We show applications of the method in simulating many-body dynamics and solving energy spectra with the quantum Krylov algorithm. Our work sheds light on practical Hamiltonian simulation with noisy-intermediate-scale-quantum devices.

    Abstract Abstract Exceptional points (EPs), the degeneracy points of non-Hermitian systems, have recently attracted great attention because of their potential of enhancing the sensitivity of quantum sensors. Unlike the usual degeneracies in Hermitian systems, at EPs, both the eigenenergies and eigenvectors coalesce. Although EPs have been widely explored, the range of EPs studied is largely limited by the underlying systems, for instance, higher-order EPs are hard to achieve. Here we propose an extendable method to simulate non-Hermitian systems and study EPs with quantum circuits. The system is inherently parity-time (PT) broken due to the non-symmetric controlling effects of the circuit. Inspired by the quantum Zeno effect, the circuit structure guarantees the success rate of the post-selection. A sample circuit is implemented in a quantum programming framework, and the phase transition at EP is demonstrated. Considering the scalable and flexible nature of quantum circuits, our model is capable of simulating large-scale systems with higher-order EPs.

    Abstract In this study, we conducted an analysis of the pedestrian safety system for crosswalks introduced in Korea to improve sustainable traffic safety. The pedestrian crossing information provision system provides information to a driver in advance when a pedestrian is detected in the driver’s blind spot when the latter is turning right at an intersection. The location analyzed was the three-way intersection in front of Yungheung Elementary School in Jeollabuk-do, and vehicle speed information for 150–160 min before and after system installation was collected. As a result of comparing and analyzing the change in the compliance rate of the spot speed and the speed limit, it was found that there was no statistical difference in the change in the spot speed, but in the absence of pedestrians, the speed increased slightly compared with that before installation. The change in the speed limit compliance rate was found to improve when pedestrian crossing information was provided. In addition, a chi-square test found that there was a difference in the speed limit compliance rate before and after system installation where pedestrians existed (when information was provided), while there was no difference in the situation where pedestrians did not exist (when information was not provided).

    Abstract Carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems is crucial to advance carbon neutrality and support sustainable development. Extensive studies have explored the effect of land use change on carbon storage, especially urban expansion. As one of the world’s top urban agglomerations, the Pearl River Delta Urban Agglomeration (PRDUA) is facing a dramatic loss of carbon storage along with urbanization. Coordinating economic development and ecological protection and achieving low-carbon green development are urgently needed to alleviate the decline in urban carbon storage. Here, we quantified land use change in the historical period (2000, 2010, 2020) and in 2030 and then estimated carbon storage dynamics at different scales by combining the PLUS model and the InVEST model. We found that: (1) Construction land significantly increased simultaneously with considerable losses of farmland (2273.29 km2) and forestland (949.98 km2) from 2010–2020. In 2030, construction land will expand by 997.83 km2 (12.51%), 1419.97 km2 (17.79%), and 238.60 km2 (2.99%) under the natural growth (NG), urban expansion (UE), and low carbon development (LCD) scenarios, respectively. (2) Compared to 2020, carbon storage under the LCD will reach 6.51×108 Mg, with the lowest decline rate (0.35%). (3) At the city level, Shenzhen had the highest decline rate under various scenarios, followed by Zhuhai and Guangzhou. At the county scale, carbon storage followed the order NG > UE > LCD in 2000–2030. At the grid scale, carbon storage showed a declining trend from the central PRDUA region to marginal areas. Thus, comprehensive considering the multiscale effects of land use change on carbon storage was beneficial to formulate reasonable measures for specific areas. Differentiated development categories at different scales and low-carbon industrial upgrading should be implemented to maintain ecosystem services and achieve sustainable development.

    Abstract Purpose Among patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), those with intracranial large vessel occlusion (LVO) should undertake endovascular treatment (EVT) based on mechanical thrombectomy. Although the Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) classification system has been used in overall population of patients with AIS, especially for secondary prevention. In the current study, a new classification system for the LVO population is proposed. Methods The classic TOAST and Stop Stroke Study TOAST (SSS TOAST) were applied to the LVO population. Based on discordance with those systems, a new LVO classification system was developed and applied to the LVO population. The new system comprised extracranial atherosclerosis (ECAS), intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS), cardioembolism (CE), cryptogenic embolism, stroke of undetermined etiology (SUE; two or more etiologies), and stroke of other determined etiology (SOE) where small artery occlusion was removed. Results The LVO classification system comprised 43 ECAS (6.52%), 141 ICAS (21.36%), 303 CE (45.91%), 75 cryptogenic embolism (11.36%), 75 SUE (11.36%; cardioembolic source in 98.67%), and 23 SOE (3.48%) patients. The ICAS group had a significantly longer median onset-to-puncture time than the other groups. In the ICAS group, 102 of 141 (72.34%) remained partial recanalization after EVT. Conclusion The LVO classification system differentiating ECAS and ICAS in patients with large artery atherosclerosis and classifying cryptogenic embolism is more suitable for patients with EVT for intracranial LVO. Further studies for predicting underlying ICAS and planning treatment strategy should be performed.

    Abstract A 70-year-old male with risk factors for vascular disease presented with dizziness and instability. The patient showed horizontal geotropic nystagmus when turning his head while lying down, with larger slow phase velocity observed when turning to the left. There were no other neurological deficits. Video head impulse tests and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials were normal. The initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings were negative; however, the patient experienced subsequent right-side weakness, right tilting, and recurrent episodes of vertigo. A follow-up MRI revealed an acute left medial medullary infarction, which seems to have caused the paroxysmal geotropic central positional nystagmus in this patient.

    Abstract In this study, we describe the results of an analysis of the effectiveness of providing pedestrian safety services, in terms of reducing pedestrian traffic accidents. We conducted our analysis by investigating the speed of vehicles at two different demonstration points, where the same system and service were provided. For this purpose, we selected a child protection zone and a point on a general road section where a raised crossing is installed. We conducted vehicle speed surveys at the point adjacent to the crosswalk and the points where the driver is expected to be fully provided with information, in order to examine the change in vehicle approach speed, depending on the provision of the service. Overall, the analysis showed that the vehicle’s speed at the point and approaching speed decreased when the pedestrian safety service was provided; however, the effect was more pronounced in the child protection zone, considering the characteristics of the demonstration points. From these results, we conclude that it is necessary to provide services and develop guidelines considering the surrounding environment, such as traffic safety facilities and road safety facilities, according to the characteristics and classification of each point, in order to provide efficient pedestrian safety services.
