Abstract Two homopolymeric and three copolymeric additives for base oil were synthesized using octyl acrylate (OA) and tert-butyl acrylamide (TBA) monomers. The two additives named P1 and P2 are the homopolymers of TBA and OA, respectively, whereas copolymeric additives named Co1, Co2, and Co3 were synthesized by varying the ratios of TBA:OA as 1:3, 3:1 and 1:1, respectively. The prepared polymers were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). Based on the solubility of synthesized polymers in base oil and reactivity ratios of TBA/OA copolymer (0.222, 0.434) calculated by Fineman-Ross method, P2, Co1, Co2 and Co3 were selected to evaluate their performance as pour point depressant (PPD), viscosity improver (VII), and anticorrosion additives in base oil. Additives P2 and Co1 showed the best performance as (PPD) and (VII) whereas Co2 and Co3 revealed the best performance as anticorrosion additives. The flash point of base oil increased as a concentration of polymeric additives increased in the base oil. In addition to study the performance of synthesized polymers as lubricant additives, the capability of polymers for removing CuII from synthetic wastewater was also investigated. Different parameters such as pH of solution, contact time, and CuII concentration were changed in order to study their effect on adsorption capacity of polymers. Generally, polymers with high TBA content such as P1, Co2, and Co3 showed good performance in removing CuII.

Abstract In this study, pencil graphite electrode was modified using conductive polypyrrole (Ppy) and grapheme (GF) nanocomposite for electrochemical determination of insulin. Electrochemical behavior of insulin on PGE was investigated using cyclic voltammetric (CV) and differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) and chronoaprometry (CA) methods. Several effective parameters including pH, concentration, and scan rate for electrochemical modification of electrode were investigated and optimal conditions were proposed. Kinetics of the oxidation reaction and diffusion coefficient of the sensor was studied. The performed steps allow the measurement of insulin with a linear repeatability curve and appropriate accuracy at a range of 0.225 to 1.235 μM. The limit of detection was obtained at 8.65 nM for insulin. The amount of electron transfer coefficient between modified electrode and insulin was obtained to 0.5 with 0.84~1 number of electrons exchanged during oxidation of insulin. The application of proposed sensor for analyzing insulin in a human blood serum was investigated.

Abstract Nickel-titanium shape memory alloy (NiTi) has a unique capacity to restore its initial shape after deformation, which is highly applicable to orthopaedic implantations, especially for the minimization of invasive surgeries. The high nickel content of this alloy can lead to unfavourable effects on the human body upon dissolution; thus, a reliable barrier of coatings on the NiTi surface is required to alleviate the nickel migration and increase its biocompatibility. In this paper, analyses of a titanium oxide layer development on NiTi surface using electrical discharge coating (EDC) process is presented. The recast layer thickness, crater sizes, and surface roughness were characterized based on five parameters; polarity, discharge duration, pulse interval, peak current, and gap voltage. The results show that the discharge duration is the most significant parameter to influence all responses, followed by peak current. The surface characteristics of the EDC substrate is depending on the crater formations and is highly correlated with the discharge energy intensity. As a result, appropriate parametric conditions of the electrical discharge coating process can enhance the NiTi surface for future medical applications, without compromising the shape memory effect.

Abstract Background: P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is an Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) dependent drug-efflux pump which is located abundantly in the stomach and protects the gut mucosa from xenobiotic.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of P-gp modulation on the efficacy of treatment regimen.
Method: P-gp modulation in rats was performed by using P-gp inducer (150 mg/kg rifampicin) and P-gp inhibitor (10 mg/kg cyclosporine A) for 14 days prior to be infected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). The rats were further divided into groups, which were normal control, vehicle control, antibiotics and omeprazole, antibiotics only and omeprazole only for another 2 weeks of treatment. The ulcer formation and P-gp expression were determined by using macroscopic evaluation and western blot analysis, respectively.
Results: The highest P-gp expression was shown in the induced P-gp rats (2.00 ± 0.68) while the lowest P-gp expression was shown in the inhibited P-gp rats (0.45 ± 0.36) compared to the normal P-gp rats. In all groups, the rats which were infected with H. pylori, had a significant increase (p < 0.05) in P-gp expression level and a more severe ulcer formation compared to the healthy rats. The ulcer developed at different levels in the rats with inhibited, induced, or normal P-gp expression. After receiving the standard therapy for H. pylori, it was observed that the healing rate for ulcer was increased to 91% (rats with inhibited P-gp expression), 82% (rats with induced P-gp expression) and 75% in rats with normal P-gp. The use of rifampicin to induce P-gp level was also shown to be effective in eradicating the H. pylori infection.
Conclusion: The synergism in the standard therapy by using two antibiotics (clarithromycin and amoxicillin) and proton pump inhibitor (omeprazole) have shown to effectively eradicate the H. pylori infection. Thus, P-gp expression influenced the effectiveness of the treatment.

Abstract Abstract In this study, sago starch was modified in order to enhance its physicochemical properties. Carboxymethylation was used to introduce a carboxymethyl group into a starch compound. The carboxymethyl sago starch (CMSS) was used to prepare smart hydrogel by adding acetic acid into the CMSS powder as the crosslinking agent. The degree of substitution of the CMSS obtained was 0.6410. The optimization was based on the gel content and degree of swelling of the hydrogel. In this research, four parameters were studied in order to optimize the formation of CMSS–acid hydrogel. The parameters were; CMSS concentration, acetic acid concentration, reaction time and reaction temperature. From the data analyzed, 76.69% of optimum gel content was obtained with 33.77 g/g of degree of swelling. Other than that, the swelling properties of CMSS–acid hydrogel in different media such as salt solution, different pH of phosphate buffer saline solution as well as acidic and alkaline solution were also investigated. The results showed that the CMSS–acid hydrogel swelled in both alkaline and salt solution, while in acidic or low pH solution, it tended to shrink and deswell. The production of the hydrogel as a smart material offers a lot of auspicious benefits in the future especially related to swelling behaviour and properties of the hydrogel in different types of media.

Abstract Galantamine hydrobromide is formulated in tablets and capsules prescribed through oral delivery for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. However, oral delivery of drugs can cause severe side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal disturbance. Transdermal delivery of galantamine hydrobromide could avoid these unwanted side effects. In this work, galantamine hydrobromide was formulated in gel drug reservoir which was then fabricated in the transdermal patch. The in vitro drug release studies revealed that the drug release from the donor chamber to receptor chamber of Franz diffusion cell was affected by the amount of polymer, amount of neutralizer, amount of drug, types of permeation enhancer, and amount of permeation enhancer. Visual observations of the gels showed that all formulated gels are translucent, homogeneous, smooth, and stable. These gels have pH in the suitable range for skin. The gel also showed high drug content uniformity. Hence, this formulation can be further used in the preparation of transdermal patch drug delivery system.

Abstract Diabetes has become a major health problem in society. Invasive glucometers, although precise, only provide discrete measurements at specific times and are unsuitable for long-term monitoring due to the injuries caused on skin and the prohibitive cost of disposables. Remote, continuous, self-monitoring of blood sugar levels allows for active and better management of diabetics. In this work, we present a radio frequency (RF) sensor based on a stepped impedance resonator for remote blood glucose monitoring. When placed on top of a human hand, this RF interdigital sensor allows detection of variation in blood sugar levels by monitoring the changes in the dielectric constant of the material underneath. The designed stepped impedance resonator operates at 3.528 GHz with a Q factor of 1455. A microfluidic device structure that imitates the blood veins in the human hand was fabricated in PDMS to validate that the sensor can measure changes in glucose concentrations. To test the RF sensor, glucose solutions with concentrations ranging from 0 to 240 mg/dL were injected into the fluidic channels and placed underneath the RF sensor. The shifts in the resonance frequencies of the RF sensor were measured using a network analyzer via its S

Abstract Electrical cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) is a powerful technique to monitor real-time cell behavior. In this study, an ECIS biosensor formed using two interdigitated electrode structures (IDEs) was used to monitor cell behavior and its response to toxicants. Three different sensors with varied electrode spacing were first modeled using COMSOL Multiphysics and then fabricated and tested. The silver/silver chloride IDEs were fabricated using a screen-printing technique and incorporated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) cell culture wells. To study the effectiveness of the biosensor, A549 lung carcinoma cells were seeded in the culture wells together with collagen as an extracellular matrix (ECM) to promote cell attachment on electrodes. A549 cells were cultured in the chambers and impedance measurements were taken at 12-h intervals for 120 h. Cell index (CI) for both designs were calculated from the impedance measurement and plotted in comparison with the growth profile of the cells in T-flasks. To verify that the ECIS biosensor can also be used to study cell response to toxicants, the A549 cells were also treated with anti-cancer drug, paclitaxel, and its responses were monitored over 5 days. Both simulation and experimental results show better sensitivity for smaller spacing between electrodes. Graphical abstract The fabricated impedance biosensor used screen-printed silver/silver chloride IDEs. Simulation and experimental results show better sensitivity for smaller between electrodes.
