    Abstract Understanding how the occurrence and abundance of invasive species vary over time and the environmental factors that cause such variation is important for managing and controlling invasive species. To date, studies with this perspective remain scarce in the Neotropics. We used a database describing 12 years of the occurrence of an invasive rotifer (Kellicottia bostoniensis) in a large neotropical wetland (230 km²) (upper Paraná River) since 2000. We investigated how multiple local abiotic and biotic environmental variables jointly affect occurrence and abundance of an invasive zooplankton species (K. bostoniensis). The abundance and occurrence of K. bostoniensis varied significantly over time, with a marked increase after 2009. Furthermore, biotic (native zooplankton abundance, chlorophyll-a) and abiotic (turbidity, and water level) variables were important drivers of K. bostoniensis. Whereas native zooplankton and turbidity were negatively associated with the occurrence and abundance of K. bostoniensis, chlorophyll-a and water level were positively related. Furthermore, as biotic and abiotic variables naturally fluctuate to extremes, the occurrence and abundance of K. bostoniensis were reduced. Collectively, our findings underline the important role of local variables, particularly, native zooplankton and turbidity to control the abundance and occurrence of K. bostoniensis. Our results also suggest that maintaining natural extreme oscillations of the local variables can be effective in the management of invasive species.

    Abstract Extreme climate events and the damming of natural rivers can intensify the effects of droughts and floods, which can consequently affect aquatic biota. We investigated whether a prolonged drought increased the similarity of aquatic metacommunities over time when compared to a period with extreme flood events in 10 floodplain lakes. We expected to find (i) lower temporal environmental variability and lower β diversity among months during the prolonged drought period, and (ii) a more pronounced decrease in β diversity for aquatic organisms with active dispersal (fish) than for small organisms with passive dispersal (phytoplankton and zooplankton) during the prolonged drought period. We estimated the β diversity among months using the Sørensen and Bray–Curtis dissimilarities and their components separately for each lake and each period. We used paired t tests to compare the periods. Although the prolonged drought reduced environmental variability, the homogenization of biota was dependent on the considered β diversity component. In the face of climate change and a higher frequency of severe droughts, biotic variability can decrease over time, thereby changing the dynamics of floodplain ecosystems. We emphasize the importance of natural flood events for maintaining environmental variability and ecosystem functioning in floodplains.

    Abstract Pesticides have reached aquatic ecosystems and have caused numerous impacts on organisms. The present study aimed to assess the sensitivity of Daphnia similis Straus 1820 and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (Korshikov) F.Hindák to three commercial pesticides with different active ingredients: Siptran 500SC® (atrazine), Dimilin® (diflubenzuron), and Aproach Prima® (picoxystrobin + cyproconazole). For this purpose, we performed acute toxicity tests on these organisms. The compound most toxic to D. similis was the insecticide Dimilin® (toxic up to 5 μg/L of the active ingredient), followed by the fungicide Aproach Prima® (48h-EC50: 47.33 μg of the active ingredients/L) and the herbicide Siptran 500SC® (48h-EC50: 534.69 mg of the active ingredient/L). In contrast, Siptran 500SC® was the most toxic compound (96h-IC50: 52.61 μg/L) to P. subcapitata, followed by Aproach Prima® (96h-IC50: 164.73 μg/L) and Dimilin® (non-toxic up to 1 g/L). The toxicity of the fungicide to algae and microcrustaceans demonstrates that compounds developed for certain organisms are able to affect others, indicating the relevance of conducting ecotoxicological tests on different organisms.

    Abstract Fish farming in net cages is considered as an alternative to food production in response to elevated population growth, and zooplankton is an important resource to the development of this economic activity. We (i) compared microcrustacean composition in eutrophic and oligotrophic habitats under net tank influence, (ii) investigated changes in species distributions in these habitats, and (iii) indicated which chlorophyll-a concentrations presented thresholds that alter community structure. We expected different responses of species to changes in chlorophyll-a concentration due to net cage management, as chlorophyll-a represents an estimate of food availability. Microcrustacean samplings and chlorophyll-a estimation were made upstream, downstream and close to the net cages, during 120 days, in the Rosana Reservoir (Brazil). Species composition differed significantly (p<0.05) among habitats where in the eutrophic environment was found the largest number of species. However, only in the eutrophic habitats did frequency of occurrence and relative abundance of some species change with chlorophyll-a variation. Thus, net cage management influenced species distribution only in the most productive habitat. These responses can affect ecosystem processes related to trophic dynamics as secondary productivity and nutrient cycling.

    Abstract While many studies predict changes in the distribution of individual species as a result of climate change, few studies have assessed such changes at the community level for aquatic invertebrates. We used ostracods (bivalved micro-crustaceans) to assess the effects of climate change on regional species richness, (re-) distribution and community composition across the river basins of the Southern Cone of South America. Using a range of niche-based models, we present projections of changes in diversity components in the light of two scenarios on increased carbon emissions: the moderate-optimistic (RCP 4.5) and the pessimistic (RCP 8.5) scenarios from four climate models on 2050 and 2080 scenarios. Future projections show increase in the number of (mapped) cells with a richness up to five species as compared to present-day situations. La Plata basin (LPLA) presents the highest species loss, mainly in the Paraguay and Paraná rivers, while the species gain occurred mainly in the La Puna Region, North Chile-Pacific Coast and southern LPLA basins. Global change might impact ostracod communities even on a medium term (2050). Despite losses of local species in all future scenarios, a small portion of the LPLA was identified as a potential future climatic refugia for ostracod communities, while the distribution area in Patagonia was predicted to be extremely small for some ostracods at the southernmost parts of South Argentina-South Atlantic Coast and South Chile-Pacific Coast basins in both futures. These results indicate that non-model organisms can also contribute greatly to formulate evidence-based management plans for aquatic ecosystems under climate change scenarios.

    Abstract Disentangling the role of mechanisms driving metacommunity structure is fundamental for conservation strategies. Several studies have been done in aquatic communities; however, little is known about the factors driving oomycete communities. This research aimed to investigate beta diversity patterns and assess the role of environmental (chemical, physical, and hydrologic), spatial, and temporal (sampling months) factors in driving oomycete beta diversity in a spatial extent of 33 km from two Brazilian rivers. We took water samples in 10 sites quarterly, from August 2017 to May 2018. The partition of beta diversity into its components – species replacement and richness difference – was performed using the Jaccard dissimilarity index. Distance-based redundancy analysis and variation partitioning were used to assess the relationship between explanatory variables and beta diversity. We found that beta diversity was spatially and temporally high, and the replacement component was the main driver of the oomycete metacommunity’s beta diversity. Replacement and total beta diversity were explained mainly by spatial location and the month of sampling, while the richness difference was more associated with the environmental variables chlorophyll a and ammonia. Our findings suggest that dispersal limitation (spatial) and temporal factors are the main drivers of the total beta diversity and replacement in the oomycete metacommunity, while species sorting (environmental factor) influences the richness difference. Accordingly, that taking temporal factors into account in metacommunity studies is important to explain beta diversity patterns, especially in rivers with remarkable variability in hydrological regime and under eutrophic conditions.

    Abstract Climate change and species invasions pose serious threats to biodiversity. Daphnia lumholtzi Sars, 1885, a cladoceran species native to Africa, Asia, and Oceania, has successfully invaded large sections of North and South America, there is evidence that the increase in the Earth's temperature and the number of reservoirs have facilitated this process. In this context, our study evaluated the effects of climate change on the invasive potential of D. lumholtzi, identifying the environmental suitability of non‐native river basins around the world to invasion by this species. Using ecological niche modelling, we predicted potential distribution areas of D. lumholtzi in non‐native continents at the present time, in 2050 and 2080. For future scenarios we considered two hypotheses of greenhouse gas emission: extreme (8.5 representative concentration pathways) and moderate (4.5 representative concentration pathways). We used different algorithms in niche models within the ensemble forecast approach to estimate the potential distribution of D. lumholtzi river basins worldwide. Furthermore, we developed a susceptibility index, that uses the presence of D. lumholtzi, its suitability information, area, and number of reservoirs to evaluate the susceptibility to invasion for each river basin. Our predictions showed that future climate change will have a strong influence on the invasive potential of D. lumholzti, potentially expanding its distribution in eastern North America and boosting invasion across Europe, especially at the end of the century. The susceptibility index also showed that many river basins that presently are not vulnerable to invasion by this species will become susceptible to invasion, these basins lie mainly in Europe. Our results will be useful for monitoring and mitigating the spread of this species, especially for river basins identified as highly susceptible to invasion. Thus, we suggested that D. lumholtzi should be a high priority for monitoring and preventive actions against invasion of these river basins. We also suggest that better risk assessments, that include invasive species and reservoirs, should be a priority in national energy development plans.

    Abstract Climate change threatens freshwater fish by severely modifying water quality and hydrological dynamics, hence altering the species distribution. We assessed the climate change effects on the geographical distribution of Salminus brasiliensis, a keystone species of economic interest in the La Plata River basin. Using ecological niche models, we estimated the species range in the present time and assessed the range shift phenomena through climatically suitable areas in the future. We also quantified the predictive uncertainty from niche models, atmosphere–ocean general circulation models, and carbon emission scenarios. Our predictions indicated a great range contraction of S. brasiliensis in the future. The south-central portion of the basin should retain the climate refuge function for the species at 2050. Nonetheless, the segregation of this climate refuge in two smaller parts was predicted at the end of the century. Our study also revealed that the greatest source of uncertainty in forecasts of species range shifts arises from using alternative niche algorithms in modeling process. Our results contribute to more effective measures for conservation of S. brasiliensis, thus helping to ensure the ecosystem processes and socioeconomic activities in the basin dependent on this species.

    Abstract The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large‐scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

    Abstract The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change.
