    Abstract This article highlights the facets and substantial contributions of personalities that contributed with their efforts to the beginning of orthodontics teaching process and the training of new specialists. The main contributions to scientific, educational and investigative literature, either in the country or abroad are emphasized. Finally, it is sought to summarize the growing development of orthodontics in the 50 years of academic training in Santiago de Cuba, with new professionals able to conserve the principles and ethical values promoted by their predecessors, with evident scientific-technical results and quality in professional performance.

    Abstract The case report of an 18 years patient is described. She went to Mártires del Moncada Teaching Provincial Stomatologic Clinic in Santiago de Cuba, due to persistence of temporary canine teeth. The participation of a multidisciplinary team integrated by specialists in: orthodontics, imaging, prosthesis and maxillofacial surgery was necessary for the successful diagnosis and treatment. They corroborated the retention of upper canine teeth. By means of the combined treatment of orthodontics and prosthesis, the patient cosmetic and functional rehabilitation was achieved.

    Abstract It was described a clinical case of a 12-year-old adolescent, treated at the Orthodontic Department of the Provincial Stomatological Clinic "Mártires del Moncada" in Santiago de Cuba, who was diagnosed with retention of the upper right central incisor more than two years ago and for which he received treatment with fixed appliances prior to tooth straightening and clinical-radiographic follow-up. During the orthodontic procedure, he was referred to the Department of Periodontics because he had a coral pink increase in volume in the area of that tooth, with a hard consistency and fibrous appearance, which made it impossible to definitively incorporate the tooth into its arch and occlusion plane. The corresponding complementary examinations were carried out, localized fibrous gingival hyperplasia was diagnosed and surgical treatment (gingivectomy) was performed, which allowed the successful completion of orthodontic treatment without any psychological or social implications for the patient. The rare occurrence of this type of injury associated with retention of upper central incisors motivated this case report.

    Abstract Se realizó una intervención educativa para modificar conocimientos y comportamientos de 48 escolares de segundo grado con hábitos de succión digital, pertenecientes a la Escuela Primaria nr 94 "Marcos Martí Rodríguez" de Santiago de Cuba, durante el 2009. Luego de ejecutar actividades educativas basadas en técnicas afectivo-participativas, particularmente amenas para los educandos de esas edades, 32 de ellos (66,66 %) abandonaron esa práctica deformante por haber comprendido su nocividad desde los puntos de vista estético y funcional. An educational intervention was carried out to modify the knowledge and behaviour of 48 second grade students with digital suction habit, belonging to 94 "Marcos Martí Rodríguez" primary school in Santiago de Cuba, during 2009. After the educational activities based on participative-affective techniques, particularly pleasant for the students with those ages, 32 (66,66%) quitted that deforming practice because they understood the damage from the aesthetic and functional point of view.

    Abstract Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y transversal de los 155 niños con pérdida de la longitud del arco dentario en la dentición mixta temprana que acudieron a la consulta de odontología en el área de salud de Genaro Méndez, estado de Táchira, República Bolivariana de Venezuela, desde enero hasta noviembre de 2008, para determinar los riesgos asociados a esta afección. En la serie se obtuvo que la caries dental (36,27 %) y las extracciones prematuras (31,37 %) constituyeron los riesgos de mayor prevalencia en los niños y niñas de 8 a 9 años. El grupo dentario más afectado fue el posterior (55,48 %); y el diente que más comúnmente perdido por las extracciones prematuras, el segundo molar temporal (42,76 %). A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in 155 children with loss of dental arch length in the early mixed teething, who attended the dental outpatient department in the health area of Genaro Méndez, state of Táchira, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, from January to November, 2008, to determine the risks associated with this condition. In the series it was found that the dental decay (36,27 %) and early extractions (31,37 %) were the most prevalent risks in 8-9 year-old children. The most affected teeth group was the posterior one (55,48 %), and the tooth most commonly lost by early extractions was the second temporal molar (42,76 %).

    Abstract An epidemiologic, observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study, of 136 scholars aged 12 to 14, of "Antonio Maceo Grajales" Urban Secondary School was carried out in Santiago de Cuba, from September, 2015 to February, 2016, aimed at determining, in these and in their parents, the perception of the necessity of orthodontic treatment through the index of dental cosmetic. Among the main results of the series a higher frequency of dental crowding was obtained (69.1%) as component of the Index and a prevalence of the minor malocclusion (no need of treatment), with 53.7%, followed by the defined malocclusion (elective therapy), with 28.7%. It was concluded that most of the parents were satisfied with the dental occlusion of their children and that a high number of the scholars was happy with their dental cosmetic.

    Abstract Se describe el caso clínico de un adolescente de 12 años de edad, con micrognatismo transversal, quien acudió a la Clínica Estomatológica Provincial Docente "Mártires del Moncada" de Santiago de Cuba por presentar los incisivos superiores apiñados y palatinizados, de manera que se decidió utilizar el tornillo de expansión Hyrax, con el cual se logró mejorar la estética facial y la sonrisa del paciente. Este es un procedimiento terapéutico eficaz, pues permite un rápido ensanchamiento de las bases óseas del maxilar, a la vez que aumenta la longitud del arco dentario y el espacio necesario para la alineación de los dientes

    Abstract Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y transversal de 490 adolescentes de 12-14 años de edad, estudiantes de la Escuela Secundaria Básica “Orlando Carvajal Colas”, atendidos en el Departamento de Estomatología del Policlínico Universitario “Julián Grimau García” en Santiago de Cuba, en el período de marzo del 2015 a igual mes del 2016, a fin de identificar la necesidad de tratamiento ortodóntico en ellos a través del índice de estética dental. En la casuística la mayoría de los adolescentes con maloclusiones correspondieron a las edades de 13 y 14 años (con 34,0 %, respectivamente), sin diferencias significativas en cuanto al sexo, y los principales componentes del índice de estética dental hallados fueron el apiñamiento dentario (25,5 %), el espaciamiento en los segmentos incisales (19,4 %) y el diastema (15,9 %). Se demostró que la mayor cantidad de estudiantes no necesitaban tratamiento ortodóncico alguno o solo requerían un tratamiento menor, puesto que 51,6 % de la serie presentaban maloclusión normal o leve.

    Abstract An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of 199 9th grade students belonging to "Alberto Fernández Montes de Oca" Urban Basic Secondary School in Santiago de Cuba was carried out from September, 2013 to same period in 2014, aimed at applying dental aesthetics index in these students. For data gathering the oral dental health survey form designed by the World Health Organization was used which includes the 10 components of the above mentioned index. As summary measures the absolute numbers and percentages were used. The necessity of high-priority and compulsory treatment prevailed; also, dental crowding was the most significant component in dental aesthetics index.

    Abstract A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 29 plaster cast of the lower arch that presented a degree of crowding was carried out, which belonged to patients admitted in the Orthodontics Department of "Mártires del Moncada" Teaching Provincial Stomatological Clinic in Santiago de Cuba, from October to December, 2013, in order to determine the correspondence among the clinical and Moyers-Jenkins methods for the evaluation of dental crowding. Among the analyzed variables there were: methods of evaluation of crowding, teething type and degree of dental crowding. When analyzing the 2 methods those affected with severe discrepancy prevailed; however, most of those that were evaluated as slight discrepancy by the first method were without discrepancy when applying the second one. Higher precision existed between both methods in the moderated and severe discrepancies.
