Abstract Individuals are increasingly exposed to news and opinion from beyond national borders in a world that is becoming more and more globalised. This news and opinion is often concentrated in clusters of ideological homophily such as political parties, factions or interest groups. But how does exposure to cross-border information affect the diffusion of ideas across national and ideological borders? Here we develop a non-linear mathematical model for the cross-border spread of two ideologies by using an epidemiological approach. The populations of each country are assumed to be a constant and homogeneously mixed. We solve the system of differential equations numerically and show how small changes in the influence of a minority ideology can trigger shifts in the global political equilibrium.

Abstract Objective: To discuss the need for the inclusion of decision-support software safety in workplace safety management systems.
Methods: Review of software safety systems, the socio-technical model of Information Technologies safety and sources of decision-support software safety risk.
Results: Not applicable to a commentary viewpoint article.
Conclusions: There are no regulatory safety standards for decision-support software as there are for software that is deemed a medical device. Establishing the safety of this software therefore becomes the responsibility of the industry and the users. Occupational and environmental professionals can help close this gap by applying safety management system processes to these digital tools.

Abstract Chemosensory communication in lizards may be based on multiple compounds coming from multiple sources. Both secretions from external epidermal glands, and internal cloacal glands and feces are known to convey information (sex, familiarity, body size, etc.) for conspecifics. However, although some compounds in femoral gland secretions have been characterized and their function examined, there is very little information on potential semiochemicals in cloacal products and feces. More importantly, it is not well-known whether the compounds and information from multiple sources are redundant, complementary, or different. We analyzed the lipids in femoral gland secretions and feces of male Carpetan rock lizards (Iberolacerta cyreni) and examined which compounds might predict body size. We found many compounds in feces, mainly steroids, alkanes, and branched alkanes, while the main compounds in femoral secretions were steroids and fatty acids. The body size of males was related to the proportions of some alkanes, alkenes, and terpenoids in feces, while it is related to the proportions of some steroids and fatty acids in femoral secretions. There were also differences in the chemical profiles of feces of males and females, which may allow sex recognition. Therefore, femoral secretions and feces may both inform on males’ sex and body size, but the chemical bases of this information are different depending on the source.

Abstract The microbial diversity of artisanal cheeses has been ever more extensively explored over recent years. Many new studies have been particularly focused on the detection and identification of fungi associated with cheese rinds. This is not surprising given that the composition and abundance of fungi on the cheese surface can significantly contribute to desirable sensory qualities, while also contributing to defects, particularly during ripening, and risks associated with the production of mycotoxins. Here we critically review the impact of fungi on the quality of artisanal cheeses, as well as the risks associated with the presence of particular species or strains with specific phenotypes. Ultimately, we address the question; should fungi be predominantly considered villains when it comes to artisanal cheese safety or could their presence be better exploited by producers in order to generate innovative products with greater added value? Such discussions will be increasingly important from the perspective of the future commercialization and regulation of artisanal cheeses that frequently contain a high abundance of moulds.
