    Abstract Colitis occurs in about 4% of individuals treated with rituximab. Optimal management of rituximab-induced colitis, which does not improve with cessation of the drug and supportive care alone, is poorly defined due to limited evidence. Severe refractory disease can lead to colectomy. We present a case of suspected rituximab-induced colitis occurring in a woman in her 70s suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. The patient achieved full clinical, endoscopic and histological remission of colitis with infliximab therapy. The use of biological therapy to treat rituximab-induced colitis can be a potentially organ-saving rescue therapy; however, it must be balanced against the increased risks of immunosuppression in patients already exposed to rituximab. While more evidence is required to fully understand the efficacy and risks of antitumour necrosis factor therapy in this scenario, our case provides an example of the successful use of infliximab for rituximab-induced colitis, which likely helped the patient avoid a colectomy.

    Abstract Cryptococcus species are environmental yeasts, with a worldwide distribution and remarkable environmental adaptation. Although many species do not cause disease, C. neoformans and C. gattii are causative agents of cryptococcosis, a life threatening infection and a significant public health problem worldwide. Infection especially affects immunocompromised animals and humans. In wildlife, cryptococcosis appears to be more prevalent in captive populations. The objective of this study was to assess whether apparently healthy quokkas (Setonix brachyurus) harbor Cryptococcus spp. Using cultural and molecular methods, we studied yeasts isolated from nasal swabs collected from 130 free‐ranging quokkas on Rottnest Island (RI, n = 97) and the mainland (n = 33) of Western Australia. Unspeciated Cryptococcus spp. (from four quokkas), C. neoformans var. grubii (serotype A) (two quokkas) and C. magnus (one quokka) were isolated from the nasal lining of apparently healthy quokkas from RI. Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii was isolated from animals captured in a human‐populated area on RI. There was no significant effect of the presence of Cryptococcus on the results of haematology, blood chemistry, peripheral blood cell morphology or clinical examination. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented isolation of C. neoformans var. grubii (serotype A) and C. magnus in a free‐ranging macropod in Western Australia. The public health implications of this finding should be further explored.

    Title translation Factors associated with dissatisfaction with pharmacological treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A cross-sectional study.
    Abstract Background and objectives: Diabetes is a chronic disease with a high impact on both health and Quality of Life Related to Health (QLRH). To evaluate the satisfaction of treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus through the Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (DTSQ) and its relationship with sociodemographic variables, with antidiabetic medication and clinical-analytical variables.
    Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in General University Hospital of San Juan de Alicante between September 2016 and December 2017. Two hundred thirty-two patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus at least 1 year before inclusion, treated with antidiabetic medication were included. The Spanish version of the DTSQ scale was used to measure satisfaction with treatment. Factors associated with low satisfaction were analyzed by applying the Chi-square test for qualitative variables and Student-T for quantitative variables. To estimate magnitudes of association, logistic models were adjusted.
    Results: Two hundred thirty-two patients were included in this study. 21.5% of the patients presented low satisfaction with the treatment. Patients who presented low satisfaction with treatment were associated with medications that could cause hypoglycemia (OR: 2.872 [1.195-6.903]), HbA1c levels higher than 7% (OR: 2.260 [1.005-5.083]) and drugs administered by the route oral (OR: 2.749 [1.233-6.131]).
    Conclusions: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who had a lower score on the DTSQ questionnaire were associated with medications that produced hypoglycaemia, and with higher levels of HbA1c higher than 7%, and those who took oral medication.

    Abstract Porous materials have become one of the best options for the development of optical sensors, since they maximize the interaction between the optical field and the target substances, which boosts the sensitivity. In this work, we propose the use of a readily available mesoporous material for the development of such sensors: commercial polycarbonate track-etched membranes. In order to demonstrate their utility for this purpose, we firstly characterized their optical response in the near-infrared range. This response is an interference fringe pattern, characteristic of a Fabry-Pérot interferometer, which is an optical device typically used for sensing purposes. Afterwards, several refractive index sensing experiments were performed by placing different concentrations of ethanol solution on the polycarbonate track-etched membranes. As a result, a sensitivity value of around 56 nm/RIU was obtained and the reusability of the substrate was demonstrated. These results pave the way for the development of optical porous sensors with such easily available mesoporous material.

    Abstract A computational study of the interaction of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) with its specific antibody and of that antibody with skeletal troponin I (sTnI), the principal interferon of cTnI, is carried out. Computational and simulation tools such as FTSite, FTMap, FTDock and pyDock are used to determine the binding sites of these molecules and to study their interactions and molecular docking performance, allowing us to obtain relevant information related with the antigen-antibody interaction for each of the targets. In the context of the development of immunosensing platforms, this type of computational analysis allows performing a preliminary in-silico affinity study of the available bioreceptors for a better selection when moving to the experimental stage, with the subsequent saving in cost and time.

    Abstract Introduction: The main objective of this study is to validate the PIPP-R scale (Premature Infant Pain Profile-Revised) for measuring neonatal pain in the Spanish hospital setting.
    Materials and methods: The original scale will be translated from English into Spanish and a consensus translation will be prepared by the research team, which will be back-translated from Spanish into English. The content validity of the Spanish version of the scale will be measured using the Delphi method. Subsequently, a multicenter observational study will be conducted to assess construct validity, internal consistency, and intra-observer and inter-observer agreement. Pain will be assessed by comparing scores for a specific non-painful procedure with those for a specific painful procedure. The sample will include 300 subjects in intensive care and intermediate care units, who will be equally distributed among the participating hospitals. The subjects will be stratified into three groups by gestational age.
    Discussion: The original version of the PIPP-R scale is useful for objectively assessing neonatal acute and procedural pain from a gestational age of 25 weeks and over. It is important to culturally adapt the original validated scale and to test its validity and reliability in the Spanish healthcare context. The results of this study may represent significant progress in pain management.

    Abstract Salmonella is a genus of Gram-negative, motile, and facultative anaerobic bacteria with a worldwide distribution that contaminates multiple substrates (vegetation, food, soil, and water) and inhabits the gastrointestinal tract of birds, reptiles, and mammals, including humans. Rottnest Island is a popular tourist destination and is abundantly inhabited by quokkas (Setonix brachyurus), a charismatic small wallaby. Current data on the association between Salmonella and quokkas on Rottnest Island are outdated by approximately 30 years. Additionally, previous studies on quokkas on this island and mainland Western Australia did not perform physical examinations or any diagnostic tests. The aim of the project was to assess the prevalence of Salmonella spp. in quokkas from Rottnest Island and mainland Western Australia and correlate the presence of the bacterium with the health of the animal. Ninety-two quokkas from Rottnest Island (n = 71) and populations on the mainland (n = 21) were screened for Salmonella, and a prevalence of 47.9% and 4.8%, respectively, was determined. A total of 16 serovars were identified from 37 isolates; five of these serovars had previously not been described in the quokka. Salmonella appeared to have an effect on the haematology and blood chemistry of quokkas on Rottnest Island consistent with subclinical salmonellosis. The health of Rottnest Island quokkas, and their potential impact on the health of the visitors to the island, should continue to be monitored carefully.

    Abstract El tratamiento de los vinos antes del embotellado para evitar la precipitación de las sales del ácido tartárico es un paso importante y común durante la producción del vino. La estabilización en frío es el tratamiento de estabilización más utilizado, y aunque ha demostrado ser efectiva, presenta algunas desventajas significativas. Estas son las razones por las cuales se están introduciendo otros productos y metodologías en las bodegas. Algunas de estas nuevas técnicas implican la reducción de la concentración de ácido tartárico y/o potasio en los vinos. Otras son técnicas aditivas y utilizan coloides protectores o inhibidores de la cristalización de las sales. En este estudio, se han tratado con carboximetilcelulosa, con poliaspartado de potasio y con resina de intercambio iónico vinos blancos, rosados y dos tipos diferentes de vinos tintos. Se estudiaron las características enológicas y cromáticas de los vinos y se evaluaron también sensorialmente. Los resultados indican que las características sensoriales y cromáticas se mantuvieron en los vinos (en comparación con un vino de control no tratado) con el uso de la carboximetilcelulosa y el poliaspartato, no detectándose diferencias en la mayoría de los casos en una prueba sensorial triangular en el caso de la carboximetilcelulosa y siendo los vinos tratados con poliaspartato de potasio evaluados positivamente.
