Abstract | The Ervidel-Roxo (ER) and Figueirinha-Albernoa (FA) volcanic sequences in the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB) in Portugal form two elongated and independent exposures trending WNW-ESE. The ER sequence is mainly composed of rhyolites with subordinated rhyodacites and rocks of intermediate (“andesitic”) composition, whereas the FA succession comprises mostly rhyodacitic to dacitic rocks. Both sequences experienced metamorphic recrystallization under greenschist facies conditions and heterogeneous deformation during the Variscan orogeny. Temperatures obtained with the chlorite geothermometer show that a late hydrothermal event is locally recorded, possibly reflecting the maintenance of high geothermal gradients in the upper crust due to (moderate to) rapid crustal uplifting after completion of the oblique continental collision at the SW Iberian Variscides. |
