    Abstract Tissue engineering (TE) is a branch of regenerative medicine with enormous potential to regenerate damaged tissues using synthetic grafts such as scaffolds. Polymers and bioactive glasses (BGs) are popular materials for scaffold production because of their tunable properties and ability to interact with the body for effective tissue regeneration. Due to their composition and amorphous structure, BGs possess a significant affinity with the recipient's tissue. Additive manufacturing (AM), a method that allows the creation of complex shapes and internal structures, is a promising approach for scaffold production. However, despite the promising results obtained so far, several challenges remain in the field of TE. One critical area for improvement is tailoring the mechanical properties of scaffolds to meet specific tissue requirements. In addition, achieving improved cell viability and controlled degradation of scaffolds is necessary to ensure successful tissue regeneration. This review provides a critical summary of the potential and limitations of polymer/BG scaffold production via AM covering extrusion-, lithography-, and laser-based 3D-printing techniques. The review highlights the importance of addressing the current challenges in TE to develop effective and reliable strategies for tissue regeneration.

    Abstract Ovalipes trimaculatus is a highly valued fisheries resource with high potential for aquaculture production. Still, there is need for experimental information to sustain efficient husbandry practices. In this work we analyze the combined effects of different thermo-haline conditions on the length of development and survival of embryos (6, 10, 13, 15, 18, 22, 24 ⁰C x 30, 33 ‰; 13 ⁰C x 26, 30, 33, 37 ‰) and zoeae I (13, 18, 22 ⁰C x 30, 33 ‰; 13 ⁰C x 26, 30, 33, 37 ‰) from individuals sampled in the Atlantic coast of Patagonian. Among the most relevant results, it was found that the mean length of embryogenesis decreased from 63 to 19 days with increasing temperatures, but was not affected by seawater salinity. Mean embryonic survival was significantly lower at the combination of the highest temperature and salinity tested. Also, it differed between salinity conditions. Both at 30 and 33‰, the length of the Zoea I stage significantly varied between thermal treatments, being significantly longer at 13⁰C. No zoeae I reared at 13 ⁰C survived at 37‰ and mean survival at 26‰ halved that of 30-33‰. Results obtained reduce aquaculture production costs.

    Abstract Poor adherence to oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) can lead to therapy failure and risk of complications. The aim of this study was to produce an adherence proportion to OADs and estimate the association between good adherence and good glycemic control in patients with T2D. We searched in MEDLINE, Scopus, and CENTRAL databases to find observational studies on therapeutic adherence in OAD users. We calculated the proportion of adherent patients to the total number of participants for each study and pooled study-specific adherence proportions using random effect models with Freeman-Tukey transformation. We also calculated the odds ratio (OR) of having good glycemic control and good adherence and pooled study-specific OR with the generic inverse variance method. A total of 156 studies (10,041,928 patients) were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled proportion of adherent patients was 54% (95% confidence interval, CI: 51-58%). We observed a significant association between good glycemic control and good adherence (OR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.17-1.51). This study demonstrated that adherence to OADs in patients with T2D is sub-optimal. Improving therapeutic adherence through health-promoting programs and prescription of personalized therapies could be an effective strategy to reduce the risk of complications.

    Abstract Ti6Al4V titanium alloy (Ti-alloy) sleeved ceramic heads have become widely used in revision surgery when the hip stem is left in situ. This solution guarantees a new junction between the bore of the ceramic head and the Ti-alloy sleeve, regardless of any possible, slight surface damage to the Ti-alloy taper of the stem. However, this solution introduces an additional Ti-alloy/Ti-alloy interface pairing, which is potentially susceptible to mechanically assisted crevice corrosion. This study evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively the damage that occurred in vivo on Ti-alloy micro-grooved 12/14 tapers of (i) primary implants with non-sleeved ceramic heads (Group 1), (ii) secondary implants with non-sleeved ceramic heads (Group 2), and (iii) secondary implants with sleeved ceramic heads (Group 3). A total of 45 explants-15 for each group, including short-, medium- and long-neck heads-underwent optical evaluation for surface damage (Goldberg scoring), surface roughness analysis, and SEM/EDX analysis. The Goldberg scores did not reveal different patterns in the tapers' surface damage; surface damage was classified as absent or mild (surface damage score ≤2) in 94%, another 94%, and 92% of the analysed regions for Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3, respectively. Small but significant differences in morphological changes occurred in the tapers of the three groups: reductions no greater than a few percentage points in median values of roughness parameters were found in Group 1 and Group 2, while negligible changes were found in Group 3. SEM/EDX analysis revealed little (i.e., a slight increase in the oxygen content) to undetectable changes in the chemical composition on the Ti-alloy surface independently of the group. These results suggest that the Ti-alloy/Ti-alloy sleeve/taper junction is only mildly susceptible to mechanically assisted crevice corrosion. Assembling a sleeved ceramic head, with variable neck lengths up to a "long-neck", to a Ti-alloy micro-grooved 12/14 taper of a stem left in situ does not seem to increase the risk of revision due to trunnionosis, as long as junction stability (i.e., the proper seating of the sleeved ceramic head on the 12/14 taper) is achieved intraoperatively.

    Abstract One of the challenges associated with introducing a vaccine is monitoring its impact through clinical and molecular surveillance. The aims of this study were to analyze the genetic diversity of rotavirus A in Argentina between 2019 and 2022 and to assess the phylogenetic and phylodynamic features of the unusual G6 strains detected. A significant decline in the Wa-like genogroup strains was observed, and G6 strains were detected for the first time in Argentina, in association with P[8] and P[9]. Spatiotemporal analysis showed that the G6-lineage I strains detected recently in Argentina and Brazil might have emerged from European strains. This study provides recent evidence of the genetic diversity of rotaviruses in isolated cases. It is considered important to support continuous surveillance of rotavirus in the post-vaccine scenario, mainly to evaluate potential changes that may occur after the COVID-19 pandemic.
