    Abstract Some studies have shown that ICSI obtains poorer results than conventional IVF in women with ovarian endometriosis, suggesting that oocytes could be sensitive to ICSI-induced mechanical damage. The aims of this study were to clarify (a) whether ovarian endometriosis could induce peculiar fragility in the oocyte, so that ICSI would finally result harmful, and (b) whether endometrioma removal before IVF could be advisable in order to avoid any hypothetical detrimental effect. We retrospectively studied 368 women, 203 with in situ endometrioma (128 of which underwent ICSI, 75 conventional IVF) and 164 who received laparoscopic stripping of endometrioma before ICSI. For women with in situ endometrioma, cIVF and ICSI outcome was comparable for all parameters studied, including the clinical pregnancy rate per embryo transfer (PR/ET: 31.8% vs. 39.5% in the cIVF and ICSI groups) and cumulative live birth rate per ovum pick-up (CLBR/OPU: 24.4% vs. 27.7%). ICSI outcome was similar comparing women with in situ endometrioma and women previously submitted to laparoscopic stripping of cysts (CLPR/OPU 27.7% vs. 25.3%). Our findings suggest that (a) in women with in situ endometrioma ICSI may be performed, when needed, without harming oocytes and compromising the outcome and (b) that there is no advantage in removing endometrioma before ICSI.

    Abstract Objective: To assess whether receiving information about twin pregnancy in the form of oral presentation given by a physician could affect the acceptance of single embryo transfer (SET) by couples undergoing IVF.
    Study design: Prospective interventional study.
    Setting: University hospital IVF unit.
    Patients: One hundred and forty patients (70 couples) undergoing IVF.
    Interventions: A questionnaire to measure patients' emotions about twin pregnancy was administered to IVF patients just before and immediately after attending a slide presentation in which the risks of twin pregnancy were explained. Patients scored (1 to 6) ten adjectives linked either to positive or negative emotions; scores before and after presentation were compared. The patients' preference between double embryo transfer (DET) and SET was also registered before and after the presentation.
    Results: The presentation about twin pregnancy caused a significant (p < 0.001) shift of the score distribution toward lower values for positive adjectives referred to twin pregnancy and higher values for negative adjectives. Information impacted similarly on women and men. Despite the relevant change in the emotional attitude, after presentation, 45.7% of women and 48.6% of men were still favorable to DET, whereas 24.3% of women and 37.1% of men preferred SET.
    Conclusions: Oral information on the risks of twin pregnancy can affect the emotional attitude of patients toward twin pregnancy, but the wish of getting pregnant after fresh embryo transfer overcomes all rational consideration, and the majority of patients still prefer DET.

    Abstract mkFit is an implementation of the Kalman filter-based track reconstruction algorithm that exploits both thread- and data-level parallelism. In the past few years the project transitioned from the R&D phase to deployment in the Run-3 offline workflow of the CMS experiment. The CMS tracking performs a series of iterations, targeting reconstruction of tracks of increasing difficulty after removing hits associated to tracks found in previous iterations. mkFit has been adopted for several of the tracking iterations, which contribute to the majority of reconstructed tracks. When tested in the standard conditions for production jobs, speedups in track pattern recognition are on average of the order of 3.5x for the iterations where it is used (3-7x depending on the iteration). Multiple factors contribute to the observed speedups, including vectorization and a lightweight geometry description, as well as improved memory management and single precision. Efficient vectorization is achieved with both the icc and the gcc (default in CMSSW) compilers and relies on a dedicated library for small matrix operations, Matriplex, which has recently been released in a public repository. While the mkFit geometry description already featured levels of abstraction from the actual Phase-1 CMS tracker, several components of the implementations were still tied to that specific geometry. We have further generalized the geometry description and the configuration of the run-time parameters, in order to enable support for the Phase-2 upgraded tracker geometry for the HL-LHC and potentially other detector configurations. The implementation strategy and high-level code changes required for the HL-LHC geometry are presented. Speedups in track building from mkFit imply that track fitting becomes a comparably time consuming step of the tracking chain.

    Abstract One of the most computationally challenging problems expected for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) is finding and fitting particle tracks during event reconstruction. Algorithms used at the LHC today rely on Kalman filtering, which builds physical trajectories incrementally while incorporating material effects and error estimation. Recognizing the need for faster computational throughput, we have adapted Kalman-filter-based methods for highly parallel, many-core SIMD and SIMT architectures that are now prevalent in high-performance hardware. Previously we observed significant parallel speedups, with physics performance comparable to CMS standard tracking, on Intel Xeon, Intel Xeon Phi, and (to a limited extent) NVIDIA GPUs. While early tests were based on artificial events occurring inside an idealized barrel detector, we showed subsequently that our mkFit software builds tracks successfully from complex simulated events (including detector pileup) occurring inside a geometrically accurate representation of the CMS-2017 tracker. Here, we report on advances in both the computational and physics performance of mkFit, as well as progress toward integration with CMS production software. Recently we have improved the overall efficiency of the algorithm by preserving short track candidates at a relatively early stage rather than attempting to extend them over many layers. Moreover, mkFit formerly produced an excess of duplicate tracks; these are now explicitly removed in an additional processing step. We demonstrate that with these enhancements, mkFit becomes a suitable choice for the first iteration of CMS tracking, and eventually for later iterations as well. We plan to test this capability in the CMS High Level Trigger during Run 3 of the LHC, with an ultimate goal of using it in both the CMS HLT and offline reconstruction for the HL-LHC CMS tracker.

    Abstract Purpose: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a lethal genetic disorder affecting secretory epithelia, caused by mutations on the CFTR gene. In this paper we study the interactivity between the CFTR gene and CF disease over the time course of CF.
    Method: Cross-sectional analysis of CF patient population data from Latin-America, Canada, and The Netherlands, under the assumption that they represent stationary populations, was used to determined and correlates hazard rates, average cores and CF progression rates.
    Results: Results suggests the existence of two phases throughout the course of CF.
    Conclusion: While the initial phase was related to the CFTR genotype, the kinetics of the second phase seems to be common to all groups considered. The hypothesis that the interactivity between the CFTR gene and CF disease would be limited in time is presented, suggesting that mutant CFTR would trigger a disease that evolves to become independent from the CFTR gene itself.

    Abstract One of the main objectives of the Spanish and Portuguese-Speaking Group of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (GHEP-ISFG) is to promote and contribute to the development and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the area of forensic genetics. Due to this fact, GHEP-ISFG holds different working commissions that are set up to develop activities in scientific aspects of general interest. One of them, the Mixture Commission of GHEP-ISFG, has organized annually, since 2009, a collaborative exercise on analysis and interpretation of autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) mixture profiles. Until now, three exercises have been organized (GHEP-MIX01, GHEP-MIX02 and GHEP-MIX03), with 32, 24 and 17 participant laboratories respectively. The exercise aims to give a general vision by addressing, through the proposal of mock cases, aspects related to the edition of mixture profiles and the statistical treatment. The main conclusions obtained from these exercises may be summarized as follows. Firstly, the data show an increased tendency of the laboratories toward validation of DNA mixture profiles analysis following international recommendations (ISO/IEC 17025:2005). Secondly, the majority of discrepancies are mainly encountered in stutters positions (53.4%, 96.0% and 74.9%, respectively for the three editions). On the other hand, the results submitted reveal the importance of performing duplicate analysis by using different kits in order to reduce errors as much as possible. Regarding the statistical aspect (GHEP-MIX02 and 03), all participants employed the likelihood ratio (LR) parameter to evaluate the statistical compatibility and the formulas employed were quite similar. When the hypotheses to evaluate the LR value were locked by the coordinators (GHEP-MIX02) the results revealed a minor number of discrepancies that were mainly due to clerical reasons. However, the GHEP-MIX03 exercise allowed the participants to freely come up with their own hypotheses to calculate the LR value. In this situation the laboratories reported several options to explain the mock cases proposed and therefore significant differences between the final LR values were obtained. Complete information concerning the background of the criminal case is a critical aspect in order to select the adequate hypotheses to calculate the LR value. Although this should be a task for the judicial court to decide, it is important for the expert to account for the different possibilities and scenarios, and also offer this expertise to the judge. In addition, continuing education in the analysis and interpretation of mixture DNA profiles may also be a priority for the vast majority of forensic laboratories.

    Abstract The GHEP-ISFG Working Group performed a collaborative exercise to monitor the current practice of mitochondrial (mt)DNA reporting. The participating laboratories were invited to evaluate a hypothetical case example and assess the statistical significance of a match between the haplotypes of a case (hair) sample and a suspect. A total of 31 forensic laboratories participated of which all but one used the EMPOP database. Nevertheless, we observed a tenfold range of reported LR values (32-333.4), which was mainly due to the selection of different reference datasets in EMPOP but also due to different applied formulae. The results suggest the need for more standardization as well as additional research to harmonize the reporting of mtDNA evidence.

    Abstract The first search for scalar leptoquarks produced in τ-lepton-quark collisions is presented. It is based on a set of proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}. The reconstructed final state consists of a jet, significant missing transverse momentum, and a τ lepton reconstructed through its hadronic or leptonic decays. Limits are set on the product of the leptoquark production cross section and branching fraction and interpreted as exclusions in the plane of the leptoquark mass and the leptoquark-τ-quark coupling strength.

    Abstract A search for dark matter in events with a displaced nonresonant muon pair and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} of proton-proton (pp) collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV produced by the LHC in 2016-2018. No significant excess over the predicted backgrounds is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the inelastic dark matter production cross section σ(pp→A^{'}→χ_{1}χ_{2}) and the decay branching fraction B(χ_{2}→χ_{1}μ^{+}μ^{-}), where A^{'} is a dark photon and χ_{1} and χ_{2} are states in the dark sector with near mass degeneracy. This is the first dedicated collider search for inelastic dark matter.
