Abstract The dyeing behavior of conventional false-twist pin-textured polyester yarns has been studied as a function of the texturing variables. Three different dyes and three different dyeing procedures were employed. The data obtained are discussed in relation to existing quality-control procedures for textured yarns and the role of feed-yarn non-uniformity in barré problems.

Abstract Differences in feed-yarn orientation are shown to propagate through texturing and to influence most of the textured yarn properties, but information on feed-yarn orientation differences is lost on high-temperature dyeing. The correlations between the dyeing data and certain combinations of other yarn properties are encouragingly good. Several of the crimp, shrinkage, and tensile properties of the textured yarns are much more sensitive to feed-yarn orientation and to the texturing variables than are the dyeing measurements. The implications for barré problems are discussed.

Abstract The basic equations of a simple theoretical model for the sorption equilibria in ionic dyeing systems have been extended to include the "binding" of cations other than hydrogen ion to the acidic groups in the fiber. Computations based on the resultant equations are compared with existing ideas on "site-adsorption mechanisms" of cationic dyeing.

Abstract High uniformity of appearance is essential for textiles. Unintended variations of color between and within fabrics pose serious problems: their avoidance makes great demands on manufacturing and quality control at all stages from the extrusion of synthetic fibers and yarns up to the final finishing of a fabric. Most fabric inspection for quality control is visual. Unfortunately in some cases, the appearance of a color defect is a very poor guide to the true nature of the defect, a fact not generally recognized by the industry. This paper describes studies of the responses of observers to well . characterized model color defects using standard psychophysical methods. The results from this new approach will help the industry to understand these problems and provide a basis for the design of sensor systems to be used in automated fabric in spection.
