Abstract Diabetes, a psychologically challenging condition for the patients and their care givers, has been found to be a significant risk factor for depression. Depression may be a critical barrier to effective diabetes management. The accompanying fatigue remarkably lowers the motivation for self-care, often leading to lowered physical and emotion well-being, poor markers of diabetes control, poor adherence to medication, and increased mortality among individuals with diabetes. A very small proportion of the diabetes patients with depression get diagnosed, and furthermore, only a handful of the ones diagnosed get treated for depression. Despite the fact that 80 percent of the people with type 2 diabetes reside in low and middle income countries, most of the evidence on diabetes and depression comes from high income countries. This review offers a summary of existing evidence and the potential gaps that need to be addressed.

Abstract Introduction: With mental strength being the requisite skill in this knowledge era, rather than physical strength, women seem to flood into every industry on par with men. This shift in the lives of women indeed gives them more confidence and opportunities to identify their assets, but also brings a challenge as they have to perform equally at home and at work. The attempt of working women to integrate, organize and balance the various problems and activities in their different roles simultaneously puts them under tremendous pressure. Aim: The present study endeavours to gain insight into role conflict and how it influences psychological well-being of school teachers. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the government, aided and unaided schools in Udupi, Karnataka. A total of 645 school teachers were interviewed using a self-administered questionnaire. Tools used were Netemeyer scale for role conflict, Brief COPE inventory for coping mechanism and GHQ-12 for assessing psychological well-being. Univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were carried out to assess the association between role conflict and major variables in the study. Post-hoc test was used to identify the differences in coping among various groups. Results: Religion, age of the children and performing school related work on the weekend were found to be significantly associated with role conflict. Gender was not found to influence role conflict in the present study. No significant association was found between role conflict and psychological well-being. Active coping, religion and use of emotional and instrumental support were the most commonly adopted coping mechanisms. Conclusion: Thus, teachers must be provided a friendly working environment and they must be motivated for their psychological well-being. Stress relieving sessions also would help in balancing the work life.

Abstract Background Welders have been identified as a high risk group according to ranking of occupations based on cost related injuries. Employment of safety measures and practices among welders are potential ways of preventing occupational injuries. Adherence to these precautions is nearly universal in the developed world but there is scarcity of information about the situation in developing world including India. Objectives 1) To estimate the prevalence of occupational injuries among welding workers in Udupi district; 2) To assess the perception towards occupational hazards and the safety measures adopted by the welders Material and Methods A cross--‐ sectional study was conducted among 160 non--‐ industrial welding workers in Udupi district. A pre--‐structured interviewer--‐administered questionnaire was used. Results The prevalence of occupational injuries was found to be 80%. Only 24.4% of the welders had undergone professional training. Though 95% of them were aware of the importance of personal protective equipments (PPE), only 37.5% of them were regularly using PPE. Majority (75%) of them reported that welding profession was dangerous. Around 79% of the workers reported carelessness being the major cause of injury during work. Working hours of less than 8 hours in a day, reading of safety manual and maintenance of equipments were significantly positively associated with occupational injuries among welding workers. Conclusion Occupational injuries during welding are preventable. The level of experience, training and attitude while working can reduce the injuries to large extent.

Abstract Abstract Background Biomass fuel is used as a primary cooking source by more than half of the world’s population, contributing to a high burden of disease. Although cleaner fuels are available, some households continue using solid fuels because of financial constraints and absence of infrastructure, especially in non-notified slums. The present study documents a randomised controlled study investigating the efficacy of improved cookstove on the personal exposure to air pollution and the respiratory health of women and children in an Indian slum. The improved cookstove was based on co-creation of a low-smoke chulha with local communities in order to support adaption and sustained uptake. Methods The study will be conducted in a non-notified slum called Ashrayanagar in Bangalore, India. The study design will be a 1:1 randomised controlled intervention trial, including 250 households. The intervention group will receive an improved cookstove (low-smoke chulha) and the control group will continue using either the traditional cookstove (chulha) or a combination of the traditional stove and the kerosene/diesel stove. Follow-up time is 1 year. Outcomes include change in lung function (FEV1/FVC), incidence of pneumonia, change in personal PM2.5 and CO exposure, incidence of respiratory symptoms (cough, phlegm, wheeze and shortness of breath), prevalence of other related symptoms (headache and burning eyes), change in behaviour and adoption of the stove. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Institutional Ethics Committee of the Indian Institute of Public Health Hyderabad- Bengaluru Campus. Discussion The findings from this study aim to provide insight into the effects of improved cookstoves in urban slums. Results can give evidence for the decrease of indoor air pollution and the improvement of respiratory health for children and women. Trial registration The trial was registered with clinicaltrials.gov on 21 June 2016 with the identifier NCT02821650
