Abstract BACKGROUND: Patient-centered care (PCC) is a key component of high-quality care. Given the different effects of cancer on patients, patient-centeredness is very important in oncology nursing care. The aim of this study was to explore nurses' perceptions of the patient-centered in oncology nursing care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive qualitative study was conducted in 2018–2020, Iran. Data collection methods included observation and semi-structured interviews. Patient, family, and nurse behaviors were observed (total: 318 h). In addition, interviews were conducted with nurses and nursing managers (12 interviews). Data analysis was performed using Graneheim and Lundman's approach. RESULTS: Data analysis resulted in the emergence of four themes: “Organizational structure as a barrier to the PCC,” “Lack of institutionalization of PCC in nurses,” “Understanding and paying attention to the patient as PCC,” and “Situational PCC.” The final theme of this study is “PCC in the shadow of paternalism.” CONCLUSIONS: The paternalism approach in the context of oncology nursing care has made the realization of PCC difficult. The first step to promote PCC is increasing nurses' awareness of the impact of paternalism on patient-centeredness. Providing patient-centered oncology nursing care requires changing attitudes, values, and behaviors at individual, professional, and organizational levels.

Abstract Background and Aim: Peripheral nerve injury occurs in about 3% of the patients suffering from trauma and accidents. This injury induces Wallerian degeneration in the site of injury and, as a retrograde reaction, extends to the cell bodies of injured neurons in the central nervous system. The present study aimed to assess the neuro-protective effects of the alcoholic extract of Artemisia herba-alba on the degeneration of spinal cord ventral horn alpha motoneurons following sciatic nerve compression in rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 30 male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into 5 six-member groups including control (A), compressed (C), and three compressed groups plus treatment with Artemisia herba-alba ethanolic extract with a dose of 50 (D50), 75 (D75), and 100 (D100) mg/kg. The alcoholic extract of Artemisia herba-alba was injected intraperitoneally once a week for four weeks. In the control group, the muscle was dissected at the sciatic nerve; in the compression and treatment groups, the sciatic nerve was exposed to compression after muscle contraction. At the end, the mice were anesthetized and subjected to perfusion. They were then sampled from the lumbar spinal cord. After staining the histological sections with toluidine blue, the neuron density was studied. Results: Neuronal density in the compression group had a significant reduction compared with the control group (P <0.05). Neuronal density in D50 (938.3±36.2) and D75 (1259±36.8) increased significantly compared to that of group C (467.16±65.8) (P<0.05). Similarly, neuronal density in group D100 (1736.5±96.9) significantly increased compared to group C (476.16±65.8) (P<0.01). Conclusion: Alcoholic extract of Artemisia herba-alba had neuroprotective effects on alpha motoneurons in the spinal cord ventral horn following sciatic nerve compression in rats.

Abstract This review was conducted between December 2018 and March 2019 at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. A review of various studies revealed what data mining techniques to predict the probability of survival, what risk factors for these predictions, what criteria for evaluating data mining techniques, and finally what data sources for it have been used to predict the survival of breast cancer patients. This review is based on the Prism statement consisting of published studies in the field of predicting the survival of breast cancer patients using data mining techniques from 2005 to 2018 in databases such as Medline, Science Direct, Web of Science, Embase data and Scopus. After searching in these databases, 527 articles were retrieved. After removing duplicates and evaluating the articles, 21 articles were used. The three techniques of logistic regression, decision tree, and support vector machine have been most used in articles. Age, tumor grade, tumor stage, and tumor size are used more than other risk factors. Among the criteria, the accuracy criterion was used in more studies. Most of the studies used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) dataset. Typically, in the field of survival probability prediction, data mining techniques in the field of classification are given more attention due to their adaptation to this field. Accordingly, data mining techniques such as decision tree techniques, logistic regression, and support vector machine were used in more studies than other techniques. The use of these techniques can provide a good basis for clinicians to evaluate the effectiveness of different treatments and the impact of each of these methods on patientschr('39') longevity and survival. If the output of these techniques is used to provide the data input required by a decision support system, clinicians can provide risk factors related to the patient, the patientchr('39')s age, and the patientchr('39')s physical condition when providing services to breast cancer patients. Abstract Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of captopril added to standard chemotherapy regimen containing capecitabine in the prevention of hand and foot syndrome in patients with colorectal cancer. Methods: In a clinical trial study, 66 patients with colorectal cancer under chemotherapy with capecitabine-containing regimens were distributed in two groups of 33. The first group received 50 mg of captopril daily and the control group, placebo with a similar dose from one week before commencement of chemotherapy to the end of third course of treatment. Patients in two groups were evaluated for the onset of hand and foot syndrome three and six weeks after starting chemotherapy, and four weeks after the end of third course of chemotherapy. Findings: At the end of our study, 2 patients (6.1%) in the intervention group and 8 patients (24.2%) in the control group suffered from hand and foot syndrome (P = 0.039). Six weeks after the start of treatment, the prevalence of hand and foot syndrome in intervention and control groups was 3 (9.1%) and 5 (15.2%) (P = 0.45), and 2 (6.1%) and 8 (24.2%) cases four weeks after the completion of the three courses of chemotherapy, respectively (P = 0.039). Conclusion: Administration of captopril in patients undergoing chemotherapy with capecitabine-containing regimen reduced symptoms of hand and foot syndrome four weeks after the completion of the three courses of chemotherapy. According to the similarity of the pathogenesis of hand and foot syndrome with other vascular disorders, administration of captopril seems to reduce the symptoms of hand and foot syndrome.

Abstract Purpose: This study aimed to explore the communication culture in nursing care of patients with cancer.
Methods: This ethnographic study was conducted in 2018-2019. Data were collected through participatory observation (318 h of observing nurses, patients, and family behaviors), semi-structured interviews (8 interviews with nurses), and informal interactions. Data were analyzed using Spradley's framework.
Results: The study results in five cultural components of "communication determinants," "experimental acquisition of communication skills," "gradual empathetic communication," "avoidant communication with patient," and "communication with family as caregiver." "Communication between nurse, patient and family is an experimental, gradual and avoidant relationship" was the study's cultural statement.
Conclusion: In this study, the nurse-patient communication was influenced by factors related to the patient, the nurse and the care environment, and nurses acquired communication skills experimentally. There were two patterns of empathetic and avoidant communication between the nurse and the patient. For having high-quality care, nurses' behavioral patterns must be improved and changed in some cases. Nursing professors, managers, and nurses can use these results in training, hiring, orienting novice nurses, and empowering oncology nurses. Training communication skills to nurses and changing managers and nurses' approach to move from task-oriented care to holistic care help improve nurses' communication patterns.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Although the work environment of oncology nurses is highly complex and challenging, their occupational health needs are scarcely studied. This study aimed to explore the occupational health needs of oncology nurses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study was conducted in 2018–2019. The participants consisted of 52 oncology nurses and 11 other key informants. They were chosen from eight cancer treatment centers in different cities of Iran. Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews and analyzed using conventional content analysis. RESULTS: The occupational health needs of oncology nurses were grouped into three main categories included needs for self-care, development of professional competency, and a safe and healthy work environment. CONCLUSION: The work environment of oncology nurses needs to be optimized in terms of physical, psychological, organizational, and sociocultural conditions. Furthermore, the necessary measures should be taken to encourage oncology nurses to implement self-care, thus creating the preparedness to face the challenges of the workplace by developing their professional competencies.

Abstract Background: The detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) is prognostic during the disease in women with metastatic breast cancer. Integrins are key role players in nearly every step of cancer progression. In this study, we aimed to analyze integrin alpha6beta4 expression on CTCs isolated from blood samples of patients with advanced breast cancer. Materials and Methods: In this single-center study, peripheral blood samples from 23 breast cancer patients were obtained and analyzed for the presence of CTCs by EasySep™ Direct Human CTC Enrichment Kit combined with subsequent immunocytochemical staining of anti-cytokeratin and anti-epithelial cell adhesion molecules, and β4 integrin on CTCs. Data were correlated with clinicopathological parameters. Results: CTCs were detected in 100% of the patients. The ratio of integrin β4+ CTC was 61% ± 8% of total CTCs. No significant correlation between histopathological parameters and CTC detection was found. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated the importance of α6 β4 integrin expression on CTCs in distant metastasis.

Abstract Recent reports have suggested that (1) formaldehyde levels (measured as a hydrazone derivative using the DNPH derivatization method) in Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) products were underreported because formaldehyde may react with propylene glycol (PG) and glycerin (Gly) in the aerosol to form hemiacetals; (2) the equilibrium would shift from the hemiacetals to the acetals in the acidic DNPH trapping solution. In both cases, neither the hemiacetal nor the acetal would react with DNPH to form the target formaldehyde hydrazone, due to the lack of the carbonyl functional group, thus underreporting formaldehyde. These reports were studied in our laboratory. Our results showed that the aerosol generated from formaldehyde-fortified e-liquids provided a near-quantitative recovery of formaldehyde in the aerosol, suggesting that if any hemiacetal was formed in the aerosol, it would readily hydrolyze to free formaldehyde and, consequently, form formaldehyde hydrazone in the acidic DNPH trapping solution. We demonstrated that custom-synthesized Gly and PG hemiacetal adducts added to the DNPH trapping solution would readily hydrolyze to form the formaldehyde hydrazone. We demonstrated that acetals of PG and Gly present in e-liquid are almost completely transferred to the aerosol during aerosolization. The study results demonstrate that the DNPH derivatization method allows for an accurate measurement of formaldehyde in vapor products.

Abstract Synbiotics are known to exert multiple beneficial effects, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of synbiotic supplementation on carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), biomarkers of inflammation, and oxidative stress in people with overweight, diabetes, and coronary heart disease (CHD). This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted and involved 60 people with overweight, diabetes, and CHD, aged 50–85 years old. Participants were randomly allocated into two groups to take either synbiotic supplements containing three probiotic bacteria spices Lactobacillus acidophilus strain T16 (IBRC-M10785), Lactobacillus casei strain T2 (IBRC-M10783), and Bifidobacterium bifidum strain T1 (IBRC-M10771) (2 × 10⁹ CFU/g each) plus 800 mg inulin or placebo (n = 30 each group) for 12 weeks. Fasting blood samples were taken at baseline and after the 12-week intervention period to determine metabolic variables. After the 12-week intervention, compared with the placebo, synbiotic supplementation significantly reduced serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (− 3101.7 ± 5109.1 vs. − 6.2 ± 3163.6 ng/mL, P = 0.02), plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) (− 0.6 ± 1.0 vs. − 0.1 ± 0.3 μmol/L, P = 0.01), and significantly increased nitric oxide (NO) levels (+ 7.8 ± 10.3 vs. − 3.6 ± 6.9 μmol/L, P < 0.001). We did not observe any significant changes of synbiotic supplementation on other biomarkers of oxidative stress and CIMT levels. Overall, synbiotic supplementation for 12 weeks among people with overweight, diabetes, and CHD had beneficial effects on serum hs-CRP, plasma NO, and MDA levels; however, it did not have any effect on other biomarkers of oxidative stress and CIMT levels.
