Abstract Abstract The classification of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images by knowledge-based algorithms with elevation and backscatter thresholds were used in several studies to detect the Wet Snow Radar Zone (WSZ) in the Antarctic Peninsula. To identify it more accurately based on its seasonal variations, this study proposed the additional use of a threshold in synthetic images, created by rationing summer and winter sigma linear images. In our algorithm we used the following thresholds to detect the WSZ in Envisat ASAR imageries, using the Radarsat Antarctic Map Digital Elevation Model as ancillary data: i) -25 dB < s0 < -14 dB; ii) slinear summer / slinear winter < 0.4; iii) elevation H < 1,200 m for northern tip and H < 800 m for southern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The classified images were post-processed by a focal majority 5 x 5 filter and superimposed by an image of rock outcrops derived from the Antarctic Digital Database. The ratio image threshold allowed discriminating the WSZ from the Dry Snow Radar Zone and radar shadows, as well as transitional areas between this glacier zone and the Frozen Percolation Radar Zone, which would be classified incorrectly if we used only elevation and backscatter thresholds.

Abstract Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) is an uncommon, aggressive cancer that affects mainly the nasopharynx (a form that is closely related to the Epstein-Barr virus). LEC of the larynx/hypopharynx is extremely rare, accounting for only 0.2% of malignant tumors of the larynx. This study describes a case of locally advanced LEC of the larynx/hypopharynx with effective response to chemoradiation (an option that spares the patient from the risks of surgical resection). A 60-year-old sedentary, hypertensive male patient with a previous history of smoking and alcohol abuse received a histopathological diagnosis of locally advanced LEC of the larynx/hypopharynx in May 2018. He underwent treatment with chemoradiation and exhibited a complete clinical response. At about 3 years of follow-up, the patient is currently alive, free from disease and has not presented any tumor recurrences.

Abstract Objectives: Saliva can support oral wound healing, a process that requires a temporary inflammatory reaction. We have reported previously that saliva provokes a strong inflammatory response in oral fibroblasts. Bone marrow cells also give rise to macrophages, a heterogeneous subset of cell population involved in wound healing. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interleukin 4 (IL-4) induce activation of pro-(M1), and anti-(M2) inflammatory macrophages, respectively. Yet, the impact of saliva on programming bone marrow cells into either M1 or M2 macrophages remains unclear .
Design: Herein, we examined whether sterile saliva affects the in vitro process of macrophage polarization based on murine bone marrow cultures and RAW264.7 mouse macrophages.
Results: We report that sterile saliva, similar to lipopolysaccharides, provoked a robust activation of the M1 phenotype which is characterized by a strong increase of the respective genes IL-12 and IL-6, based on a real-time gene expression analysis, and for IL-6 with immunoassay. Arginase-1 and Ym1, both genes characteristic for the M2 phenotype, were not considerably modulated by saliva. Inhibition of TLR4 signaling with TAK-242, blocking NFκB signaling with Bay 11-7085, but also autoclaving saliva greatly reduced the development of the M1 phenotype.
Conclusion: These data suggest that saliva activates the TLR4 dependent polarization into pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages in vitro.

Abstract Objective: To identify compatibility, types and frequency of errors in preparation and administration of intravenous drugs.
Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive study performed at the emergency department of a university hospital in the city of São Paulo (SP). The sample consisted of 303 observations of the preparation and administration of intravenous drugs by nursing aides, nursing technicians and registered nurses, using a systematized script, similar to a checklist. The following variables were collected: errors related to dispensing, omission, schedule, unauthorized administration, dosage, formulation, incompatibility, preparation and administration.
Results: In the preparation stage, the following errors were identified: no hand hygiene (70.29%), and no use of aseptic technique (80.85%). Upon administration, no hand hygiene (81.18%), and no use of aseptic technique (84.81%). In 31.35% of observations, there was more than one medication at the same time for the same patient, of which 17.89% were compatible, 56.84% were incompatible and 25.26% were not tested, according to the Micromedex database.
Conclusion: In both preparation and administration stages, the most frequent errors were no hand hygiene and no use of aseptic technique, indicating the need to develop and implement education programs focused on patient safety.

Abstract The following work presents an overview of smart sensors and sensor fusion targeted at biomedical applications and sports areas. In this work, the integration of these areas is demonstrated, promoting a reflection about techniques and applications to collect, quantify and qualify some physical variables associated with the human body. These techniques are presented in various biomedical and sports applications, which cover areas related to diagnostics, rehabilitation, physical monitoring, and the development of performance in athletes, among others. Although some applications are described in only one of two fields of study (biomedicine and sports), it is very likely that the same application fits in both, with small peculiarities or adaptations. To illustrate the contemporaneity of applications, an analysis of specialized papers published in the last six years has been made. In this context, the main characteristic of this review is to present the largest quantity of relevant examples of sensor fusion and smart sensors focusing on their utilization and proposals, without deeply addressing one specific system or technique, to the detriment of the others.

Abstract COSMO-SkyMed (Constellation of Small Satellites for Mediterranean Basin Observation) images in spotlight mode (1 m spatial resolution) were used for recognition of geomorphological features in Martel Inlet ice-free areas, King George Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. This article shows the results from texture analysis and filtering of four X-band images with HH and VV polarization, acquired during fieldworks carried out in January and February 2011. Based on field checking and visual interpretation techniques, we identified several glacial landforms such as moraines, flutes, outwash, arêtes, glacial lineations, meltwater channels, lakes, lagoons, and shorelines. Some glacial linear features, such as lateral moraines, flutings, and arêtes are better identified with VV polarization, while supraglacial debris, debris flow, and shorelines are better discriminated with HH polarization. Meltwater channels, lakes, and lagoons were easily distinguished under both co-polarizations. Focal variance texture analysis and specific kernel size convolution filters yielded the best enhanced images for landform visual interpretation. For this propose, the Wallis adaptative, morphological Close, Prewitt with northwesterly and southeasterly directions, and some high-pass filters described in this study are the best filters. Images processed with these filters can be used for studies of geomorphic changes in Antarctica.
