Abstract An Equal Burden forms the first scholarly study of the Army Medical Services in the First World War to focus on the roles and experiences of the men of the ranks of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). These men, through their work as stretcher bearers and orderlies, provided a range of labour, both physical and emotional, in aid of the sick and wounded. They were not professional medical caregivers, yet were called upon to provide medical care, however rudimentary; they served in uniform, under military discipline, yet were forbidden, as non-combatants, from carrying weapons. Their service as men in wartime, was thus unique. Structured both chronologically and thematically, this study examines both the work that RAMC rankers undertook and its importance to the running of the chain of medical evacuation. It additionally explores the gendered status of these men within the medical, military and cultural hierarchies of a society engaged in total war, locating their service within the context of that of doctors, female nurses and combatant servicemen. Through close readings of official documents, personal papers, and cultural representations, both verbal and visual, it argues that the ranks of the RAMC formed a space in which non-commissioned servicemen, through their many roles, defined and redefined medical caregiving as men's work in wartime

Abstract The central Indonesian island of Sulawesi has recently been hitting headlines with respect to its archaeology. It contains some of the oldest directly dated rock art in the world, and some of the oldest evidence for a hominin presence beyond the southeastern limits of the Ice Age Asian continent. In this volume, scholars from Indonesia and Australia come together to present their research findings and views on a broad range of topics. From early periods, these include observations on Ice Age climate, life in caves and open sites, rock art, and the animals that humans exploited and lived alongside. The archaeology presented from later periods covers the rise of the Bugis kingdom, Chinese trade ceramics, and a range of site-based and regional topics from the Neolithic through to the arrival of Islam. This carefully edited volume is the first to be devoted entirely to the archaeology of the island of Sulawesi, and it lays down a baseline for significant future research. Abstract The health of dairy cows is an important factor for economic dairy production. Many production-related diseases, e.g. ketosis and mastitis are known for dairy cows. There are two challenges in a life of nearly every dairy cow: the transition from pregnant, non-lactating to the non-pregnant, lactating period and the acute phase reaction induced by endotoxins outside of the period of transition. Both described challenges represent energy-using processes. Dairy cows are restricted in their capacity of feed intake and also in energy intake due to the sensitive ruminal microbiota. Therefore, the improvement of efficiency of energy metabolism – especially during periods of energy deficits – plays a critical role in the health of dairy cows. L-carnitine is involved in the transport of activated fatty acids through mitochondrial membrane, where processes of energy production e.g. β-oxidation, takes place. We had hypothesized that an L-carnitine supplementation might enhance the recovery of dairy cows after periods of energy deficits. In this study, the effect of a dietary rumen-protected L-carnitine supplementation (25 g per cow and day) was performed in 29 dairy cows (CAR) and other 30 dairy cows were used as control group (CON) from day 42 ap until day 126 pp. Feed and water intake, body weight and milk yield and also milk ingredients and somatic cell counts were determined. Blood samples were taken over the whole period, but with high-resolution (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 24, 48, 76 h) after calving (manuscript 1) and after an i.v. injection of 0.5 µg/kg BW E. Coli LPS on day 111 pp (manuscript 2). They were analyzed for carnitine and its precursors and metabolites, clinical-chemical (NEFA, BHB, TG) parameters, lactate, glucose and insulin, blood gas, white blood cell counts, haptoglobin and cortisol. Furthermore, cows were clinically examined before each blood sampling and finally ultra-sonographic measurements of fat tissues were performed. The L-carnitine supplementation in this trial increased milk yields and ...
