    Abstract Abstract Child health is an important public health issue in China and the Chinese government always attached great importance to child health care. With the implementation of a series of medical and health reforms in China in recent decades, the status of child health improved year by year. Objectives This study aims to comprehensively evaluate if the measures implemented in the medical and health reforms effectively promoted the development of Chinese child health care in recent years and provide theoretical support for future decision-making on the policies of child health care in China. Methods A total of six indicators were selected from the China Health Statistics Yearbook. Based on the multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) algorithm, three different evaluation methods were applied in the study, which are the weighted technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS) method, the weighted rank-sum ratio (RSR) method, and the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE). Each indicator's weight was calculated by the entropy weight methods objectively. The sensitivity analysis was conducted to validate the stability and accuracy of the rank results. Results The results indicated that the rank values of each year’s child health care calculated by the different evaluation methods were not exactly the same, but the overall trend is consistent which is that child health care in China improved year by year from 2000 to 2020. The top 5 were ranked from 2016-2020 and the bottom 5 were ranked from 2000-2004. Conclusions The results indicated that the policies and measures implemented in the medical and health reforms, as well as improved sanitation conditions, availability of healthy food and water, etc., have jointly promoted the development of child health care in China in the past 20 years, providing a scientific theoretical basis for future policy-making to promote child health care.

    Abstract Sepsis is one of the main causes of death in critically ill patients. Despite the continuous development of medical technology in recent years, its morbidity and mortality are still high. This is mainly related to the delay in starting treatment and non-adherence of clinical guidelines. Artificial intelligence (AI) is an evolving field in medicine, which has been used to develop a variety of innovative Clinical Decision Support Systems. It has shown great potential in predicting the clinical condition of patients and assisting in clinical decision-making. AI-derived algorithms can be applied to multiple stages of sepsis, such as early prediction, prognosis assessment, mortality prediction, and optimal management. This review describes the latest literature on AI for clinical decision support in sepsis, and outlines the application of AI in the prediction, diagnosis, subphenotyping, prognosis assessment, and clinical management of sepsis. In addition, we discussed the challenges of implementing and accepting this non-traditional methodology for clinical purposes.

    Abstract In this study, rapid resistance in-season quick (RISQ) tests were developed for detecting the resistance in Echinochloa spp. to penoxsulam, metamifop, and quinclorac, which are widely used in rice fields to control E. spp. biotypes. Seedlings in 1–2 leaf stages from nine biotypes of E. crusgalli , E. crusgalli var. zelayensis, and E. glabrescens, with different susceptibility to the three herbicides tested, were transplanted to plates containing nutrient agar and different rates of herbicides. The survival rates were recorded at 8 days after treatment when no more new roots emerged for all the treatments. By comparing the results from RISQ tests and whole-plant pot bioassays statistically, discrimination rates could be determined to distinguish resistant plants from susceptible plants. For penoxsulam, metamifop, and quinclorac, the discrimination rates were 0.3, 0.6, and 2.4 µmol/L, respectively. Two additional biotypes of E . crusgalli collected in rice fields were used to confirm the validation of the RISQ test and the obtained results by the RISQ test were consistent with that of the whole-plant pot bioassay. Therefore, the developed RISQ test would be a possible alternative method to determine the susceptibility of E . spp. to certain herbicides.

    Abstract Abstract This study presents a dynamical model of the attitude angles of boom-type roadheader, to reveal the response characteristics of the attitude angles in steep coal seam. Based on the Lagrange equation, the dynamical model of the attitude angles of roadheader is established, then the simulation system is constructed in Simulink, to solve the dynamical model. Afterwards, a calculating method of the cutting load is proposed, to formulate the external loads of the roadheader during cutting process. Focused on the steep coal seam, of which the dip angle is 30°, the dynamical model is solved, and the solving results influenced by different factors are obtained. The results show that, the variations of roadheader’s attitude are affected greatly by the cutting load, while the influence of swing angle of the cutting arm is relatively slight. Among the three attitude angles, the pitch angle varies most greatly, which can reach up to 9.1° and 8.7° during horizontal and vertical cutting process respectively. Finally, the numerical simulation results are verified by experimental data. The dynamical model and response characteristics of roadheader’s attitude angle presented in this paper, can provide useful basis for prediction of roadheader’s operating status and rectification of roadheader’s attitude in steep coal seam. Article Highlights 1. The dynamical model of roadheader’s attitude is established, to accurately describe dynamic behaviors of roadheader during cutting process. 2. The response regularities of roadheader’s attitude in steep coal seam, under effects of different factors, are revealed comprehensively. 3. A method to calculate the cutting load is proposed, upon which the three dimension forces on the cutting head can be obtained.

    Abstract Abstract Solidago canadensis is an invasive plant that is capable of adapting to variable light conditions. To elucidate the shade tolerance mechanism in S. canadensis at the molecular level, transcriptome analyses were performed for leaves growing under natural light and three shade level conditions. Many differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found in the comparative analysis, including those involved in photosynthesis, antioxidant, and secondary metabolism of phenol‐ and flavonoid‐related pathways. Most genes encoding proteins involved in photosynthesis, such as photosystem I reaction center subunit (Psa), photosystem II core complex protein (Psb), and light‐harvesting chlorophyll protein (Lhca and Lhcb), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging‐related enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), were upregulated with the shade levels. Furthermore, most of the DEGs related to secondary metabolite synthesis were also upregulated in the shade conditions. Our study indicates that S. canadensis can respond to shade stress by modulating the expression of several photosynthesis‐related, free radical scavenging‐related, and secondary metabolism‐related genes; thus, this species has the ability to adapt to different light conditions.

    Abstract Key message: CaFCD1 gene regulates pepper cuticle biosynthesis. Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is an economically important vegetable crop that easily loses water after harvesting, which seriously affects the quality of its product. The cuticle is the lipid water-retaining layer on the outside of the fruit epidermis, which regulates the biological properties and reduces the rate of water-loss. However, the key genes involved in pepper fruit cuticle development are poorly understood. In this study, a pepper fruit cuticle development mutant fcd1 (fruit cuticle deficiency 1) was obtained by ethyl methanesulfonate mutagenesis. The mutant has great defects in fruit cuticle development, and the fruit water-loss rate of fcd1is significantly higher than that of the wild-type '8214' line. Genetic analysis suggested that the phenotype of the mutant fcd1 cuticle development defect was controlled by a recessive candidate gene CaFCD1 (Capsicum annuum fruit cuticle deficiency 1) on chromosome 12, which is mainly transcribed during fruit development. In fcd1, a base substitution within the CaFCD1 domain resulted in the premature termination of transcription, which affected cutin and wax biosynthesis in pepper fruit, as revealed by the GC-MS and RNA-seq analysis. Furthermore, the yeast one-hybrid and dual-luciferase reporter assays verified that the cutin synthesis protein CaCD2 was directly bound to the promoter of CaFCD1, suggesting that CaFCD1 may be a hub node in the cutin and wax biosynthetic regulatory network in pepper. This study provides a reference for candidate genes of cuticle synthesis and lays a foundation for breeding excellent pepper varieties.

    Abstract Exosomes released by cells can serve as vehicles for delivery of biological materials and signals. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are non-coding RNAs longer than 200 nt, which roles are increasingly appreciated in various biological content. Tumor-derived exosomal lncRNAs have been implicated as signaling mediators to orchestrate cell function among neighbor tumor cells. However, the role of tumor-derived lncRNAs in cross-talk with environmental macrophages has yet to be explored. In this paper, we demonstrated that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells–derived exosomes contain elevated levels of lncRNA TUC339 and that HCC-derived exosomes could be taken up by THP-1 cells. In seeking to dissect the biological function of tumor secreting TUC339 in macrophages, we applied loss-of-function and gain-of-function strategies. We observed increased pro-inflammatory cytokine production, increased co-stimulatory molecule expression, and enhanced phagocytosis upon suppression of TUC339 by siRNA in THP-1 cells, and the opposite effect upon over-expression of this lncRNA, which indicates that TUC339 was involved in the regulation of macrophage activation. Moreover, we detected an elevated level of TUC339 in M(IL-4) macrophages as compared to M(IFN-γ + LPS) macrophages and a down-regulation of TUC339 expression during M(IL-4)-to-M(IFN-γ + LPS) repolarization and vice versa. Furthermore, suppression of TUC339 in macrophages diminished the expression of M(IL-4) markers upon IL-4 treatment while overexpression of TUC339 in macrophages enhanced M(IL-4) markers upon IFN-γ + LPS treatment, which suggests a critical function of TUC339 in the regulation of macrophage M1/M2 polarization. Lastly, using microarray analysis, we identified cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, CXCR chemokine receptor binding, Toll-like receptor signaling, FcγR-mediated phagocytosis, regulation of the actin cytoskeleton, and cell proliferation are related with TUC339 function in macrophages.     Abstract In recent years, carbon dots (CDs) are promising fluorescence probes for ions detection. In this paper, the CDs which are with an average diameter of 5.5 nm were synthesized through a simple one-step hydrothermal carbonization of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) salt. The CDs have strong yellow photoluminescence (PL) with a maximum emission intensity at 550 nm under an excitation wavelength of 450 nm. As the electron transfer will occur between Cr (VI) and the CDs, yellow fluorescence was quenched after adding the Cr (VI) ions. The CDs probe allows the detection of Cr (VI) ions over a concentration range from 0 to 0.1 M (R2 = 0.987) and the lower detection limit is 10−5 M. Simultaneously, the CDs show highly selectivity and stability toward the detection of Cr (VI) ions.

    Abstract The severity of sepsis may be associated with excessive inflammation, thus leading to acute liver injury. MicroRNA-21 is highly expressed in the liver of a variety of inflammation-related diseases, and PPARα is also proved to participate in regulating inflammation. In the present study, the LPS-induced sepsis model was established. We found that microRNA-21 expression was upregulated in the liver of sepsis mice, and microRNA-21 inhibition significantly reduced the liver injury. The expression of liver injury markers, inflammation cytokines, and PPARα in the septic mice was higher than in antagomir-21 treated septic mice. In addition, we also found that PPARα is the target gene of microRNA-21; PPARα antagonist GW6471 could reverse the effect of antagomir-21. In conclusion, our study illustrated that microRNA-21 exacerbate acute liver injury in sepsis mice by inhibiting PPARα expression.
