Abstract Introduction/Objective. Our study aimed to estimate the prevalence of glaucoma and its subtypes in the population of Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Serbia, and provide the demographic and clinical analysis of glaucoma patients involved. Methods. Our study was designed as an observational, retrospective, cross-sectional, monocentric, including all the patients with the address of residence within the city of Novi Sad, with clinically diagnosed glaucoma, at least in one eye, treated at the University Eye Clinic, Clinical Centre of Vojvodina, Novi Sad. We analyzed the five-year prevalence of different types of glaucoma, together with the characteristics of visual field and risk factors in the form of coexisting diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension. Results. Almost half of 3254 included patients (48.28%) were diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), and its prevalence in the total population of Novi Sad was estimated to be 0.46%. The prevalence of other glaucoma types was as follows: primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) 0.17%, secondary glaucoma 0.09%, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma 0.09%, normal-tension glaucoma 0.13%, pigmentary glaucoma 0.01%, and juvenile glaucoma 0.01%. In the population above 40 years of age, the prevalence of all glaucoma cases was 1.9%, while the prevalence of POAG was 0.93%, and the prevalence of PACG was 0.35%. Conclusion. Our study represents the first attempt to address the epidemiological problems of glaucoma in our region in a comprehensive, evidence-based way. The prevalence of various glaucoma types and observed age-specific prevalence trends were lower than those published by other authors involving comparable populations, and we offered several potential explanations for this in our paper.

Abstract Introduction. Significant cranial defects result from a decompressive craniectomy following head trauma, malignant brain edema, intracranial hemorrhage, or resection of tumor affected bone. Unrepaired cranial defects are not just a tremendous esthetic problem. The underlying brain is unprotected, prone to injury, and this state can lead to the so-called “syndrome of the trephined” with mood instability, headaches, and even a neurological deficit. Currently, there is no widely accepted uniform technique of cranial vault shape restoration. Combining 3D technology with the use of polymethylmethacrylate is a challenging field that can bring good functional and aesthetic results and, in the case of smart design, become efficient, low-cost technology. We offer a possible solution to a problem that would be acceptable in neurosurgical practice. Case outline. We present a 37-year-old male patient with a massive hemicranial defect as a consequence of previous decompressive craniectomy following severe craniocerebral injury the previous year. Together with engineers from the appropriate 3D modeling studio, we have designed a two-part mold by laser printing technology using biocompatible advanced polyamide. We made a customized polymethylmethacrylate graft intraoperatively using this mold and achieved good aesthetic results. Conclusion. Reports of 3D printing assisted cranioplasties are growing, describing different techniques and cost- estimation. We hope to introduce a low-cost and simple method for repairing a skull defect.

Abstract Introduction/Objective. The aim of study was to collect information about factors related to glaucoma damage at the time of surgery in Novi Sad, Vojvodina province, Serbia. Methods. Retrospective data collection on filtrating procedures of 38 patients with open-angle glaucoma was performed. The study was done at the University Eye Clinic, Clinical center of Vojvodina, Serbia between July 2011 and December 2014. The following variables were collected from a data collection sheet at last visit for each patient: age, sex, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), visual field indices (MD and PSD), number of active antiglaucoma drugs, glaucoma type, and surgical procedures. Results. The mean age was 66.21 ± 17.92 years. Among patients, 57% were female and 43% were male. Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) was found in 60% (23/38), pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (XFG) in 37% (14/38) of patients. The median number of active antiglaucoma drugs was 2.73, ranging 1–4. More than 90% of patients were on two or more medications before surgery. Mean BCVA was 0.64 ± 0.68 and oscillated 0.1–1 (according to Snellen). IOP on last visit before surgery varied 15–42 mmHg (mean IOP 26.11 ± 13.20 mmHg). Visual filed index MD showed minor and highest absolute values from -0.82-35.25 dB (mean MD -18 dB ± 19.15). All patients had trabeculectomy with Mitomycin C procedures. Conclusion. Our survey found that the level of damage is advanced in terms of visual field loss. In most patients (52.63%), visual acuity was well preserved. POAG and XFG are the most frequent diagnosis. Women and elderly population were represented in higher number in our study. Level of IOP suggests a trend to make a surgical decision at higher pressure regardless the stage of glaucoma damage.

Abstract Objective: Risk factors for epilepsy in meningioma patients are not yet clearly defined, however, seizure freedom is a significant factor for quality of life after surgery.
Methods: We performed a retrospective study of the 333 adult patients who received surgery for supratentorial meningioma at our center. Various clinical, radiological, and surgical variables were included in the multivariate regression, and the outcomes measured were the occurrence of seizure(s) preoperatively, during the hospitalization, and during the follow-up period.
Results: A total of 89 (26.7%) patients experienced preoperative seizures, of whom 62.9% were seizure free after the surgery. Of 244 patients without epilepsy before surgery, 11.9% had at least one seizure postoperatively. In total, 63 of our patients (18.9%) experienced seizures after the surgery, of whom 20 had refractory epilepsy. Multivariate analysis identified the following predictors of preoperative seizures: the absence of headache (OR: 0.23, CI: 2.55-8.50), the presence of significant peritumoral edema (OR: 4.35, CI: 2.57-7.35), and younger age (OR: 0.97 per year increase, CI: 0.95-0.99). Factors associated with early postoperative seizures were: younger age (OR: 0.96 per year increase, CI: 0.93-0.99) and the presence of preoperative seizures (OR: 2.73, CI: 1.13-6.57), while the presence of preoperative seizures (OR: 4.73, CI: 2.05-10.92), tumor progression (OR: 5.38, CI: 2.25-12.89), and neurological worsening (OR: 5.21 CI: 1.72-15.81) were significant for late postoperative seizures.
Significance: Our results from a single-center meningioma cohort confirm, in general, data from some previous studies regarding patients' characteristics for both preoperative and overall postoperative epilepsy. Besides previously described risk factors, younger age was important for preoperative and early postoperative seizures. Epilepsy is common in patients with recurrence of meningioma, but the variables of significance for refractory seizures in these patients require further examination.

Abstract Treating advanced glaucoma often requires numerous therapeutic modalities in order to achieve the desired intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the IOP lowering efficacy of both cyclocryotherapy (CCT) and transscleral diode laser cyclophotocoagulation (TS-DCPC) in the management of refractory primary open-angle glaucoma. This prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial included 40 patients (40 eyes) with refractory glaucoma treated at the Eye Department, Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia, between January 2016 and June 2019. Twenty patients underwent CCT (group 1), while another twenty patients were treated with TS-DCPC (group 2). Each patient underwent complete eye examination on the treatment day, as well as follow-up eye examinations 7 days and 1, 6 and 12 months after the intervention, when IOP and number of anti-glaucoma drugs used were recorded. The median baseline IOP was 36.50 mm Hg (IQR, 28.75-42.00) in group 1 and 27.00 mm Hg (IQR, 22.00-35.00) in group 2. Follow-up measurements of IOP in group 1 showed the following results: 16.50 mm Hg (IQR, 7.75-20.00) (60% decrease from the baseline value), 12.00 mm Hg (IQR, 9.25-18.00) (67% decrease from the baseline value), 9.00 mm Hg (IQR, 2.00-13.75) (73% decrease from the baseline value), and 9.50 (IQR, 2.50-12.00) (75% decrease from the baseline value) after 7 days, 1, 6 and 12 months, respectively. Follow-up measurements of IOP in group 2 showed the following results: 16.00 mm Hg (IQR, 10.00-17.00) (48% decrease from the baseline value), 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 10.00-16.00) (56% decrease from the baseline value), 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 12.25-16.50) (43% decrease from the baseline value) and 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 11.25-15.75) (53% decrease from the baseline value) after 7 days, 1, 6 and 12 months, respectively. The mean number of antiglaucoma drugs used decreased from 4 to 0.65±0.81 and 2.25±1.07 in groups 1 and 2, respectively. In conclusion, study results confirmed the CCT and TS-DCPC to have a rapid and statistically significant ocular hypotensive effect in eyes with refractory glaucoma at one-year follow-up.

Abstract This essay discusses Grigorije Božović's literary and publicistic work and the degree to which it offers factography for anthropogeographical anthropological (that is, related to racial features), ethnographic ethnopsychological, sociological and characterological studies of our nation living in the regions discussed in his literary and publicistic works. The author particularly analyses his traveller's reports Sa sedla i samara (From the Saddle and Pack-Saddle), Crte i reze (Lines and Bars), Po Drenici (In Drenica) and others; it also analyses the short stories published in Srpska Književna Zadruga (Serbian Literary Cooperative) (Rodjak / A Relative) and in the collections with the titles Roblje Zarobljeno (Captured Slaves) and Neizmišljeni Likovi (Nonfictional Characters). On the basis of the reviews and analyses of Grigorije Božović's publicistic and literary works in this essay, one could make a conclusion that they represent a significant scientific material and more than just that, the material relevant for the study of our and other nations in these Balkan regions.

Abstract This paper discusses Aleksandar Solovyev’s research which he primarily carried out in Bogišić’s archive in Cavtat, as well as the research including other sources relevant for the legal history of our nation in the Dubrovnik region, in other coastal areas and in the countries in their immediate hinterland; all the documents belong to the period from the 15th till the 19th century. Although he discovered most of these documents in Bogišić’s archive, Solovyev got documents from other sources, too. Solovyev published the greatest part of these materials in the editions of The Serbian Royal Academy, but he also published some treatises and articles in the following magazines: Arhiv za pravne i društvene nauke, Godišnjica Nikole Čupića and some others. Furthermore, the author particularly underlines the fact that Solovyev - in his introductory texts accompanying his publications - also did the scientific and critical analysis of the collected historical material. Studying Bogišić’s archive in Cavtat, Solovyev also got interested in the very personality of Baltazar Bogišić. In his articles in Arhiv za pravne i društvene nauke, Solovyev particularly presented his discoveries about Bogišić’s archive, he also found an unknown manuscript of Bogišić’s, the one about a law project written for the rebels from Herzegovina when they rose against the Turks for the liberation of the Serbian nation in 1875. In his collaboration with the Herzegovian rebells, Bogišić expressed his Serbian patriotic feelings, too. As for his nationality, Bogišić felt to be a Serb (′a Serb catholic′, as he used to say), but also a member of the South Slavic nation. Thus Solovyev in one of his articles (in French) described Bogišić’s activity in the elaboration of the law projects for the newly liberated Bulgaria, which remained less known in our country. Discussing Bogišić’s patriotic activity, too, the author also presents other facts about his nationality. Although the results of Solovyev’s research work discussed in this paper were available to our scientific public, our scholars have not written about them so far.

Abstract The paper presents the basic ideas of Aleksandar Bilimović in the field of economic science which he elaborated in his works in the Serbian language between the two world wars. These are primarily the ideas he developed in his books Društvo, država i privreda (Society, State and Economy) and Uvod u ekonomsku nauku (Introduction to the Economic Science), then in numerous treatises and articles he published in various magazines: Arhiv za pravne i društvene nauke, Narodno blagostanje, Ekonomist, Srpske književni glasnik and others. Belimović’s work includes the entire corpus of economic science which is obvious from the review of his most important works in the Serbian language. In them, in addition to the other economic topics, the author specially investigates his opinions about agricultural co-operation. The author also points out to Belimović’s constant endeavor to take into account the Russian economic thought, too. Due to his great erudition, excellent insight into economic science and profession, richness of ideas, as well as to his understanding and interpretation of economic phenomena, Bilimović’s opus by far surpassed the national borders and achieved European significance by its value. With his opus, the Serbian economic science was raised above its national boundaries. In the paper in a specific example, the author also points out to Bilimović’s excellent knowledge of contemporary philosophical theories. At the end, the paper also presents a review of Bilimović’s scientific and professional engagement outside economic field.

Abstract Background: Erythropoietin (EPO) is one of the systemic angiogenic factors, and its role in ocular angiogenesis and in diabetic retinopathy (DR) is not yet fully understood. The latest research data reveal a possible correlation of higher erythropoietin concentrations in the blood and in the eye with the development of more advanced stages of DR. The main aim of this work was to examine the possible influence of serum concentrations of erythropoietin on the development of diabetic retinopathy in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2.
Methods: The research involved 90 patients examined at the University Eye Clinic of the Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia. The first group comprised 60 patients with diabetes mellitus lasting for 10 years or more, with diabetic retinopathy. The second, control group consisted of 30 healthy individuals. In the first group of 60 patients with diabetes, 30 of them had non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), and 30 had proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Laboratory EPO serum levels were determined, and they were correlated to the stage of DR. Concentration of EPO was assessed by ELISA method.
Results: The highest average concentration of EPO in serum (9.95 mIU/ml) was determined in the group of people with diabetes with PDR. The lowest average concentration of EPO in the serum (6.90 mIU/ml) was found in the control group. The average concentration of EPO in serum in the group of patients with diabetes with NPDR was 7.00 mIU/ml. The EPO concentration in serum was elevated in the group of PDR, and it was directly proportional to the level of the clinical stadium of PDR, being significantly higher in the moderate and severe subgroup of PDR comparing to the control healthy subjects, NPDR and mild PDR (p = 0.007).
Conclusions: Significantly elevated serum concentration of EPO in the advanced stages of DR, and positive correlation between EPO serum concentration and clinical stages of PDR, suggest that erythropoietin represents an important growth factor from blood, which plays a significant role in retinal ischemia and angiogenesis in diabetic retinopathy, especially in the proliferative stage of this disease.
