Abstract This paper is an introductory discussion on the cause of open source software vulnerabilities, their importance in the cybersecurity ecosystem, and a selection of detection methods. A recent application security report showed 44% of applications contain critical vulnerabilities in an open source component, a concerning proportion. Most companies do not have a reliable way of being directly and promptly notified when zero-day vulnerabilities are found and then when patches are made available. This means attack vectors in open source exist longer than necessary. Conventional approaches to vulnerability detection are outlined alongside some newer research trends. A conclusion is made that it may not be possible to entirely replace expert human inspection of open source software, although it can be effectively augmented with techniques such as machine learning, IDE plug-ins and repository linking to make implementation and review less time intensive. Underpinning any technological advances should be better knowledge at the human level. Development teams need trained, coached and improved so they can implement open source more securely, know what vulnerabilities to look for and how to handle them. It is the use of this blended approach to detection which is key.

Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in aseptic reoperation rates between single or dual lag screw femoral nails,in the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures (ITF) in elderly patients.
Methods: Electronic databases were searched for RCTs and prospective cohort studies treating elderly ITF patients with a single or dual screw femoral nails. Data for aseptic reoperation rates between single screw, dual separated screw and dual integrated screw devices were pooled using a random-effects meta-analysis with 95% CIs. Pooled proportions were compared using a N-1 chi-squared test. Complications contributing to aseptic reoperation rates were extracted, and the contribution of cut-out and periprosthetic fracture as a proportion of reoperations was analysed using a negative binomial regression model.
Results: Forty-two (n = 42) studies were evaluated, including 2795 patients treated with a single screw device, 1309 patients treated with a dual separated screw device and 303 patients treated with a dual integrated screw device. There was no significant difference in aseptic reoperation rates between single and dual lag screw femoral nails of both separated and integrated lag screw designs. Moreover, complications of cut-out and periprosthetic fracture as a proportion of reoperations did not differ significantly between devices.
Conclusion: The current evidence showed that aseptic reoperation rates were not significantly different between single and dual screw nails of a separated lag screw design. For dual integrated screw devices, due to insufficient evidence available, further high quality RCTs are required to allow for decisive comparisons with these newer devices.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine clients' perceptions of the client-case manager working alliance in the context of receiving the Strengths Model of Case Management. Twenty people with severe mental illness, with a SMCM case manager, participated in semi-structured, qualitative interviews. Using first and second cycle coding, data were analyzed thematically. People in the study attributed personal life changes to their relationship with their case manager. They valued their case managers' flexibility and highlighted their work on a wide range of goals of their choosing. Case managers approached the SMCM intervention responsive to their clients' preferences and choices. The working alliance serves as a key element of the SMCM intervention. Clients describe the working alliance as helping to improve their lives. This study supports the implementation of SMCM with people with severe mental illness due to its focus on fostering a strong working alliance.

Abstract Preparing for the future is a major developmental task during adolescence and early adulthood. However, youth experiencing homelessness face additional challenges relating to economic instability, housing insecurity, and a lack of social support. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 38 youth, from Ottawa and Toronto, who were experiencing homelessness and participating in a randomized controlled trial of Housing First for Youth (HF4Y). This qualitative study explores youths' visions for the future, including their goals, aspirations, plans, and barriers to achieving them. Overall, findings demonstrated that youth had positive visions of the future and strove to reach developmentally appropriate goals and responsibilities. Compared to youth receiving HF4Y, the future expectations of those receiving treatment as usual (TAU) were characterized by uncertainty and lacked clear direction. Additionally, they emphasized self-reliance and autonomy, while HF4Y prioritized forming relationships and reconnection. Findings highlight the importance of stable housing intervention, and social, community, and financial support in planning for the future and transitioning out of homelessness. Implications for intervention, directions for future research, and limitations are provided.

Abstract There can be acts of compassion, but compassion is not an act. Compassion has no time frame or limitations. It is a way of being and a state of mind, not simply something we do to others. This is how I came to define compassion through a module I completed as part of my nursing degree at the University of York.

Abstract This paper describes the policy and principles for the provision of Military Aid to the Civil Authorities (MACA). It emphasises the importance of following the proscribed process in order to avoid possible political, legal, reputational and financial pitfalls. It outlines the broader military application of MACA before focusing on where the Defence Medical Services can contribute, drawn from recent experiences and identifying other capabilities that may be of utility. It draws heavily from Joint Doctrine Publication 02 and is quoted with the agreement of the Developments, Concepts and Doctrine Centre.

Abstract In this research brief, we report on findings from research on organizations that distribute recovered food in Metro Vancouver, Canada in the context of widespread food waste. Our findings suggest that there are challenges and costs associated with the redistribution of recovered food, and that there can be a stigma associated with using wasted food in food programming. We recommend further study of the large-scale diversion of uneaten food to food security programs, and we argue that food donation should be viewed as a limited, short-term and partial response to food waste crises, rather than a systemic fix.
