Abstract This book describes and analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on the relationship between the United States and China in its human, social and political dimensions. It does so through the experience of faculty and students at Duke University and Duke Kunshan University, a US-China joint venture university. The book reveals the intimate stories of Chinese people trapped in quarantine, situating these stories in a longer historical perspective of plagues and disease prevention in China. It describes the impact of the virus on the racialized perceptions of Chinese-Americans and Chinese students in America. Finally, it offers a preliminary assessment of the impact of the coronavirus on the legitimacy of the Chinese Communist Party, and on US-China relations. Featuring the work of artists, student journalists, historians, anthropologists and political scientists, this book presents a breadth of insights into the impact of COVID-19. James Miller is associate dean for interdisciplinary strategy, co-director of the Humanities Research Center, and professor of humanities at Duke Kunshan University. He is the author or editor of six books including, most recently, China’s Green Religion: Daoism and the Quest for a Sustainable Future (Columbia University Press, 2017).

Abstract Abstract- Stepwise coevolution, as defined by Ehrlich and Raven (1964) and others, can be equated with parallel cladogenesis or association by descent (Mitter and Brooks, 1983). I review the insect/plant literature and discuss recent cladistic findings for the Papilionidae, and compare two contrasting theories: 1) that insect/host associations have evolved through parallel cladogenesis; or 2) that insects have 'colonized' their hosts subsequent to plant cladogenesis. I conclude that no documented examples of parallel cladogenesis between insects and plants are known. The swallowtail cladograms instead offer evidence in support of the second theory. They suggest that host association patterns in the Papilionidae have resulted from repeated colonization of plants belonging to a relatively small number of families. I discuss data which indicate that plant secondary chemicals have been important 'barriers' to colonization (sensu Ehrlich and Raven, 1964), and have in large part mediated host switching in the Papilionidae.

Abstract Cauda equina syndrome is an uncommon but serious cause of lower back pain resulting from compression of the cauda equina nerve roots, most commonly by lumbar disc herniation. Red flag symptoms, such as bladder dysfunction, saddle anaesthesia and sciatica, should lead to high clinical suspicion of cauda equina syndrome. The British Association of Spinal Surgeons has published an updated standard of care for these patients because of the potentially debilitating effects of missed cases of cauda equina syndrome. This review summarises these standards and provides a framework to support quick triage of at-risk patients. Immediate magnetic resonance imaging, within 1 hour of presentation to the emergency department, is crucial in patients with suspected cauda equina syndrome to allow prompt diagnosis and treatment. Urgent decompressive surgery is usually recommended for the best outcomes, to reduce morbidity and complication rates.
