    Abstract In sports, there has been a recent and active movement to promote mixed-gender competitions for achieving gender equality in the field. However, the current debate regarding its effects limitedly focuses on balancing the number of opportunities for females and neglects its effect on athlete performance. To address this gap, this study investigated whether and how mixed-gender competitions mitigate gender-specific disadvantages of interim leaders in dynamic tournaments from the perspective of choking under pressure. Using data from 127 international segregated-gender single and mixed-gender pair figure skating competitions organized by the International Staking Union from 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2018, this study showed that female interim leaders in segregated-gender competitions are more likely to make mistakes in task executions under pressure-inducing circumstances than male interim leaders. However, in mixed-gender competitions, all of these gender-specific influences disappear. The findings contribute to the literature on mixed-gender competitions by providing new evidence on the positive impact of them, as well as expanding the literature on the impact of gender on competitive pressure.

    Abstract The unprecedented threat of the highly contagious virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes exponentially increased infections of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), highlights the weak spots of the current diagnostic toolbox. In the midst of catastrophe, nanobiosensors offer a new opportunity as an alternative tool to fill a gap among molecular tests, rapid antigen tests, and serological tests. Nanobiosensors surpass the potential of antigen tests because of their enhanced sensitivity, thus enabling us to see antigens as stable and easy-to-access targets. During the first three years of the COVID-19 pandemic, a substantial number of studies have reported nanobiosensors for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 antigens. The number of articles on nanobiosensors and SARS-CoV-2 exceeds the amount of nanobiosensor research on detecting previous infectious diseases, from influenza to SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. This unprecedented publishing pace also implies the significance of SARS-CoV-2 and the present pandemic. In this review, 158 studies reporting nanobiosensors for detecting SARS-CoV-2 antigens are collected to discuss the current challenges of nanobiosensors using the criteria of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics along with COVID-specific issues. These advances and lessons during the pandemic pave the way for preparing for the post-COVID era and potential upcoming infectious diseases.

    Abstract Effective tissue regeneration and immune responses are essential for the success of biomaterial implantation. Although the interaction between synthetic materials and biological systems is well-recognized, the role of surface topographical cues in regulating the local osteoimmune microenvironment─specifically, their impact on host tissue and immune cells, and their dynamic interactions─remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by investigating the impact of surface topography on osteogenesis and immunomodulation. We fabricated MXene/hydroxyapatite (HAP)-coated surfaces with controlled 2.5D nano-, submicro-, and microscale topographical patterns using our custom bottom-up patterning method. These engineered surfaces were employed to assess the behavior of osteoblast precursor cells and macrophage polarization. Our results demonstrate that MXene/HAP-coated surfaces with microscale crumpled topography significantly influence osteogenic activity and macrophage polarization: these surfaces notably enhanced osteoblast precursor cell spreading, proliferation, and differentiation and facilitated a shift in macrophages toward an anti-inflammatory, prohealing M2 phenotype. The observed cell responses indicate that the physical cues from the crumpled topographies, combined with the chemical cues from the MXene/HAP coatings, synergistically create a favorable osteoimmune microenvironment. This study presents the first evidence of employing MXene/HAP-multilayer coated surfaces with finely crumpled topography to concurrently facilitate osteogenesis and immunomodulation for improved implant-to-tissue integration. The tunable topographic patterns of these coatings coupled with a facile and scalable fabrication process make them widely applicable for various biomedical purposes. Our results highlight the potential of these multilayer coatings with controlled topography to improve the in vivo performance and fate of implants by modulating the host response at the material interface.

    Abstract Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the "Internet + rehabilitation guidance" under the theory of Information-Knowledge-Attitude-Practice (IKAP) in patients with esophageal cancer during the perioperative period and to analyze the influence on the short-term prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer.
    Patients and methods: From April 2022 to February 2023, 118 patients who underwent radical esophagectomy in the First Hospital of Huai'an Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University were enrolled using the convenience sampling method. They were divided into the IKAP group (59 cases) and the Control Group (Group C) (59 cases), according to the random number table method. The conventional intervention was performed during the perioperative period, and the IKAP group was also given "Internet + rehabilitation guidance" based on IKAP theory. The first postoperative defecation time, exhaust time, feeding time, discharge time, and postoperative complication rate of the two groups were compared. Meanwhile, blood samples were collected before surgery and 1, 3, 7, and 30 days after surgery (at outpatient review) for the detection of inflammatory factor indexes and nutritional indexes.
    Results: Patients within the IKAP group showed a shorter first postoperative exhaust and defecation time, eating time, and hospital compared to the control group (p<0.05). Before surgery, there was no significant difference in serum inflammatory factors and nutritional indexes between the two groups (p>0.05). Comparing the levels of serum inflammatory factors in the two groups after surgery, the levels of CRP and IL-6 in the IKAP group were lower than those in the control group on days 1, 3, and 7 after surgery. After 30 days, the serum CRP level was found to be lower than the control group, but no statistical difference with the control level of serum IL-6 (p<0.05) was found. Compared with the serum nutritional index levels in the two groups: 1 d after surgery, the serum HGB, PA, and TRF levels were not different (p>0.05). The serum ALB level in the IKAP group was higher than that in the control group (p<0.05). Postoperative 3 d, 7 d, the serum levels of HGB, ALB, PA, and TRF in the IKAP group were higher than those in the control group (p<0.05). After 30 d, there was no statistical difference in serum HGB levels between the two groups (p<0.05); Serum ALB, PA, and TRF levels in the IKAP group were higher than those in the control group (p<0.05). From preoperative to 30 days after surgery, serum CRP and IL-6 levels in 2 groups were first increased and then decreased, while serum HGB, ALB, PA, and TRF levels were first decreased and then increased. After surgery, the IKAP group showed a greater incidence of complications in patients than in controls (p<0.05).
    Conclusions: In patients with esophageal cancer, perioperative "Internet + rehabilitation guidance" based on IKAP theory can effectively shorten the postoperative gastrointestinal function recovery time and rapidly reduce the inflammatory response, improving the nutritional status of the body, thereby reducing the risk of short-term postoperative complications.

    Abstract >Time-varying electromagnetic field observed on the ground or at a spacecraft consists of contributions from (i) electric source currents, such as those in the ionosphere and magnetosphere, and (ii) corresponding currents induced by source currents within the conductive Earth's interior by virtue of electromagnetic induction. Knowledge about the spatio-temporal structure of inducing currents is a key component in ionospheric and magnetospheric studies, and is also needed in space weather hazard evaluation, whereas the induced currents depend on the Earth's subsurface electrical conductivity and allow us to place constraints on this physical property. We present an approach that reconstructs the inducing source and subsurface conductivity structures simultaneously, preserving consistency between the two models by exploiting the inherent physical link. To achieve this, we formulate the underlying inverse problem as a separable nonlinear least squares (SNLS) problem, where inducing current and subsurface conductivity parameters enter as linear and nonlinear model unknowns, respectively. We solve the SNLS problem by using the variable projection method and compare it with other conventional approaches. We study the properties of the method and demonstrate its feasibility by simultaneously reconstructing the ionospheric and magnetospheric currents along with a 1-D average mantle conductivity from the ground magnetic observatory data. The new approach shows promise in seamless integration of multiple datasets, including both satellite and ground measurements.

    Abstract Social trust has been an important mechanism in overcoming crises throughout history. Several societies are now emphasizing its role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to investigate how variations in social trust across 68 countries are related to the transmission speed of COVID-19. Specifically, using cross-national index data from the World Value Survey, the study tests how variations in social trust across countries generate different time durations at which each country reaches the peak in terms of increases in new infections of COVID-19. Using data drawn between December 31, 2019 and July 31, 2020, this study found that in countries with a high level of social trust, particularly trust among ingroup members, or with a narrower or wider range than the intermediate range of trustees, the number of new infections tended to reach the first peak within a shorter time duration than in other countries. These results imply that in such societies, on the one hand, high cooperation among people to achieve common goals and strong compliance to social norms may allow them to begin neutralizing COVID-19 faster. On the other hand, however, the low risk perception and prevalence of cohesive relationships among people may lead to speedier transmission of COVID-19 before neutralization takes place.

    Abstract The relationship between growth, inequality and poverty remains elusive, despite considerable scholarship. To what extent can governments rely on growth to eradicate poverty without reducing inequality? We derive a closed-form relationship between a minimum income threshold, changes in the Gini index of income inequality and average national income required to meet this target, independent of the form of income distribution. We develop a generalized form of redistribution and validate it against historical changes in inequality. We use this formulation to illustrate feasible growth-redistribution strategies to raise entire populations above the International Poverty Line ($1.90/day) by 2030, the Sustainable Development Goal 1, in two selective countries: India and Rwanda. We show that meeting this target would require unprecedented rates of both growth and inequality reduction in Rwanda. India could not eradicate acute poverty by 2030 with growth alone, but it could with only a modest reduction in inequality.
