    Abstract The relationship between urban expansion and population density changes is complex and plays a fundamental role in urban sustainable development research. This relationship has been studied in multiple large cities. However, there is no report of the relationship of the two factors mentioned above in urban agglomeration in a particular region of China. Ten cities located in the central-southern region of Liaoning province are selected as research samples in this study. The spatial growth rate and urban compactness index of the sample cities were calculated using the land use and population data of these cities in three time phases: 1995, 2005, and 2015. Then, the geographical growth features, the population density changes, and the link between these two in the sample cities were investigated at these three periods. Our results revealed that the studied cities of central-southern Liaoning province expanded at the three time phases under the driver of positive population density growth, but the effects of urban population change on urbanization growth modes across time were uneven across different periods. Our study showed a trend that active transition of different urbanization growth modes was associated with decreased population density.

    Abstract Wind erosion removes fine soil particles and thus affects surface soil properties, but the existence of a salt crust could prevent wind erosion and protect fine soil particles. Such results referring to wind erosion affecting soil surface textural properties have been reported by many studies. However, it is still not clear whether soil properties differ between salt-crusted soils and adjacent soils without a salt crust in areas experiencing serious wind erosion. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate paired samples from salt-crusted and non-crusted surface soils at 23 sites in the Tarim River Basin. The particle size distribution, salt content and composition, and crust thickness and strength were determined. The results of the pooled t -test reveal that, compared with soils without a salt crust, the salt-crusted soils had finer particles (silt + clay), but this difference only occurred in paired soils from the same site, and the silt content showed the largest difference between the paired soils. The salt content and salt crust strength showed great variability, from 88.52 to 603 g·kg −1 and from 0.30 to 5.96 kg·cm −1 , respectively, at all sites, but only a weak relationship (R 2 = 0.396) between the salt content and crust strength was found, indicating that the salt content was not the only factor affecting crust strength. Our results suggest that wind erosion and salinization cause great soil texture spatial heterogeneity, especially for silt particles in the Tarim River Basin. Variation in salt crust strength can influence dust emissions and must be considered in future management.

    Abstract The outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria is closely related to the pathogenicity and drug resistance of bacteria. Outer membrane proteins (OMPs) are a class of proteins with important biological functions on the outer membrane. The β-barrel assembly machinery (BAM) complex plays a key role in OMP biogenesis, which ensures that the OMP is inserted into the outer membrane in a correct folding manner and performs nutrient uptake, antibiotic resistance, cell adhesion, cell signaling, and maintenance of membrane stability and other functions. The BAM complex is highly conserved among Gram-negative bacteria. The abnormality of the BAM complex will lead to the obstruction of OMP folding, affect the function of the outer membrane, and eventually lead to bacterial death. In view of the important role of the BAM complex in OMP biogenesis, the BAM complex has become an attractive target for the development of new antibacterial drugs against Gram-negative bacteria. Here, we summarize the structure and function of the BAM complex and review the latest research progress of antibacterial drugs targeting BAM in order to provide a new perspective for the development of antibiotics.

    Abstract The agro-pastoral ecotone, an ecological transition zone connecting adjacent areas of agricultural planting area and grassland animal husbandry, has three features: a complex natural condition, relatively pronounced population pressure, and a fragile ecological environment. In this study, we conducted an ecosystem risk assessment in the western part of Jilin Province, China, based on multiscale and multitemporal remote sensing images and land-use data. Furthermore, we focused on land-use change from 1995 to 2015 by applying the dynamic change information survey method and carrying out a transfer track analysis. The results revealed three main findings. (1) The ecological risk index at the scale of 3 km × 3 km harbors significant spatial correlation. (2) The ecological risk index of unutilized land, forest land, and grassland is relatively high for each, and their anti-interference ability is weak, while the ecological risk index of construction land and water area is the lowest. (3) Human interference, e.g., construction activities and cultivated land occupation, is the leading factor driving the exacerbation of ecological risk and frequent land-use type conversions. At the study period’s end, a trend of slight contraction in the high-risk areas was found, indicating that land-use regulation and land protection policies have had significantly positive impact upon the lands’ ecological value. The overall study identified a reasonable research scale for eco-environmental risk assessment and discerned relationships between regional land-use changes through geospatial analysis. Moreover, our findings can help provide practical case study information applicable to similar regions with agro-pastoral ecotones.

    Abstract The quantum Hall effect (QHE) is a topologically protected phenomenon which has been observed in various systems. In experiments, the size of Hall bar device to realize the QHE is generally much larger than the phase coherence length, in which the quantum coherence of electrons is destroyed. Here, we theoretically study the influence of dephasing effect on the quantized Hall (QH) plateaus. We find that the QH plateaus disappear in perfectly quantum coherent systems if the coupling between leads and central region is imperfect. The Hall resistance is very large and strongly oscillates instead of presenting the QH plateaus in this case. However, by introducing the dephasing, Hall resistance decreases and the QH plateaus appear gradually. Similar results can also be observed for the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Our results propose that dephasing effect promotes the appearance of QH plateaus, which opens a new topic of the dephasing effect on topological systems.

    Abstract Shoot architecture in maize is critical since it determines resource use, impacts wind and rain damage tolerance, and affects yield stability. Quantifying the diversity among inbred lines in heterosis breeding is essential, especially when describing germplasm resources. However, traditional geometric description methods oversimplify shoot architecture and ignore the plant’s overall architecture, making it difficult to reflect and illustrate diversity. This study presents a new method to describe maize shoot architecture and quantifies its diversity by combining computer vision algorithms and persistent homology. Our results reveal that persistent homology can capture key characteristics of shoot architecture in maize and other details often overlooked by traditional geometric analysis. Based on this method, the morphological diversity of shoot architecture can be mined (quantified), and the main shoot architecture types can be obtained. Consequently, this method can easily describe the diversity of shoot architecture in many maize materials.

    Abstract ObjectiveThis study aims to systematically review recent economic evaluations of elbasvir/grazoprevir (EBR/GZR) for chronic hepatitis C (CHC), to critically appraise the reporting quality and to summarize the results.MethodsA literature search was undertaken using Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Library, EconLit, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, and Chongqing VIP to identify original articles containing economic evaluations of EBR/GZR for CHC published between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2020. The Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards statement was used to assess the quality of reporting of the articles.ResultsOf 93 articles identified, 13 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. These studies were conducted in 4 countries, and 8 active interventions were assessed. The target population was patients infected with CHC genotype 1 infection in all studies. Eight out of 13 studies that compared EBR/GZR vs. other direct antiviral agents suggested that EBR/GZR was generally more cost-effective or dominant than daclatasvir/asunaprevir (DCV/ASV), sofosbuvir/velpatasvir (SOF/VEL), ledipasvir/sofosbuvir (LDV/SOF), ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir + dasabuvir (3D) but not more cost-effective than glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (GLE/PIB). Two studies from China and one study from the USA that compared EBR/GZR vs. pegylated interferon and ribavirin (PegIFN/RBV) consistently indicated that EBR/GZR was generally more cost-effective than PegIFN/RBV. One study from Italy compared EBR/GZR with SOF + PegIFN/RBV and suggested that EBR/GZR had a lower cost and higher effectiveness. One study from France and one study from the USA confirmed that compared with non-therapy for patients with chronic kidney disease, EBR/GZR was cost-effective at commonly accepted current standards. All included studies were of good quality of reporting, with an average score of 21.9 (range 19–23).ConclusionEBR/GZR for CHC genotype 1 might be cost-effective or dominant compared with PegIFN/RBV and other direct ...

    Abstract Although previous studies showed that social anxiety disorder (SAD) exhibits the attentional bias for angry faces, few studies investigated effective face recognition combined with event-related potential (ERP) technique in SAD patients, especially the treatment effect. This study examines the differences in face processing in SAD patients before and after treatment and healthy control people (H-group). High-density EEG scans were registered in response to emotional schematic faces, particularly interested in the face processing N170 component. Analysis of N170 amplitude revealed a larger N170 for P-group-pre in response to inverted and upright stimuli than H-group in the right hemisphere. The result of the intragroup t-test showed that N170 was delayed for inverted relative to upright faces only in P-group-post and H-group but not in P-group-pre. Remarkably, the results of ANOVAs manifested that emotional expression cannot modulate N170 for SAD patients. Besides, the N170-based asymmetry index (AI) was introduced to analyze the left- and right-hemisphere dominance of N170 for three groups. It was found that, with the improvement of patients’ treatment, the value of AIN170−base d presented a decreasing trend. These results together suggested that there was no inversion effect observed for patients with SAD. The change in the value of AIN170−base d can be used as potential electrophysiological markers for the diagnosis and treatment effects on patients with SAD.

    Abstract Local state-owned enterprises (SOEs) working together with local governments can promote economic growth. However, an increase in the implicit contingent liabilities of local governments due to implicit guarantees given to SOEs has a negative effect on economic growth. The classical socialist theories and the economic stability in each financial crisis of China show that the macroeconomic efficiency of SOEs is more important than the microeconomic efficiency, and microeconomic efficiency in neoclassical economic theory cannot reflect the nature of SOEs. It is of great practical and theoretical significance to make a more comprehensive and accurate judgment on the efficiency of SOEs. This paper constructs an index of local governments’ implicit contingent liabilities in 31 provinces based on the 488 local SOEs to study the impact of implicit contingent liabilities, and the time period is the year 2007 to the year 2020. Our findings show that an increase in local SOEs’ assets suppresses economic fluctuations at the cost of increasing government’s implicit contingent debt and has a negative impact on economic growth. Unlike the fiscal influence path of explicit debt, implicit contingent debt restrains local economic growth through financial markets. The deleveraging of local SOEs and improving their efficiency can improve the overall efficiency of local funds and reduce the negative effect of local governments’ implicit contingent liabilities on economic growth.

    Abstract As a valuable reuse resource, the efficient recycling of retired power batteries is of great significance to the sustainable development of the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry. With the arrival of the NEV power battery decommissioning tide in China, how the government promotes the relevant responsible subject to improve the recovery rate is becoming urgent. Current studies have not considered the policy role of a government reward-penalty mechanism (RPM) in power battery recycling. Therefore, based on the extended producer responsibility (EPR) system, this paper constructs three models under the government RPM: the government implements the RPM only for vehicle enterprises; the government implements the RPM only for power battery manufacturers, and the government implements the RPM for both vehicle enterprises and power battery manufacturers. The results of the study show that: on the one hand, when the government implements the RPM only for vehicle enterprises, the recovery rate is the highest, and the total profit of the closed-loop supply chain is also the highest. Therefore, it is suggested that the government should set a target recycling rate according to the actual situation of each region and implement the RPM only for vehicle enterprises. On the other hand: when the government implements the RPM only for vehicle enterprises, they can implement the strategy of small profit and quick turnover to improve the recovery rate and their own profits. When the government implements the RPM only for power battery manufacturers, they should adopt the strategy of reducing the wholesale price of power battery to increase their profits by increasing sales. When the government implements the RPM for both vehicle enterprises and power battery manufacturers, if the vehicle enterprises share a large responsibility, all members of the closed-loop supply chain can benefit from the RPM.
