Abstract Various land use types have been implemented by the government in the loess hilly region of China to facilitate sustainable land use. Understanding the variability in soil moisture and temperature under various sloping land use types can aid the ecological restoration and sustainable utilization of sloping land resources. The objective of this study was to use approximate entropy (ApEn) to reveal the variations in soil moisture and temperature under different land use types, because ApEn only requires a short data series to obtain robust estimates, with a strong anti-interference ability. An experiment was conducted with four typical land use scenarios (i.e., soybean sloping field, maize terraced field, jujube orchard, and grassland) over two consecutive plant growing seasons (2014 and 2015), and the time series of soil moisture and temperature within different soil depth layers of each land use type were measured in both seasons. The results showed that the changing amplitude, degree of variation, and active layer of soil moisture in the 0–160 cm soil depth layer, as well as the changing amplitude and degree of variation of soil temperature in the 0–100 cm soil layer increased in the jujube orchard over the two growing seasons. The changing amplitude, degree of variation, and active layer of soil moisture all decreased in the maize terraced field, as did the changing amplitude and degree of variation of soil temperature. The ApEn of the soil moisture series was the lowest in the 0–160 cm soil layer in the maize terraced field, and the ApEn of the soil temperature series was the highest in the 0–100 cm layer in the jujube orchard in the two growing seasons. Finally, the jujube orchard soil moisture and temperature change process were more variable, whereas the changes in the maize terraced field were more stable, with a stable soil moisture and temperature. This work highlights the usefulness of ApEn for revealing soil moisture and temperature changes and to guide the management and development of sloping fields.

Abstract Cold starting is the biggest challenge for mechanical equipment in polar environments. Selecting suitable friction pair materials and exploring the wear mechanism are keys to improving the reliability in a low-temperature environment. This study analyzed the tribological properties of the two typical materials of hydraulic motor’s rotor at different ambient temperatures, especially at low temperature. Finally, it explored the wear process and mechanism of two sets of friction pairs. The results showed that the low temperature environment not only affects the viscosity of the hydraulic medium in the hydraulic system and changes the lubrication state between the friction pairs, but also enhances the cold brittleness of metal materials and affects the wear characteristics between the friction pairs. There is a maximum difference of around −20 °C. The wear volume of material QT500-7 sharply increases and reaches a maximum of 0.107 mm 3 when the normal force is 20 N, which is 3.65 times as much as the wear volume of the LC2-1. When the normal force is 30 N, the wear volume of materials QT500-7 and LC2-1 are 0.125 and 0.036 mm 3 , respectively. The wear volume of the former is 3.4 times that of the latter. In addition, it indicates that the impact energy of the material affects its tribological properties since the impact energy of the material QT500-7 decreases sharply, including two consecutive subintervals of sharp decreases from 97.3 J to 42.2 J and then to 18.0 J at the temperature of −10 to −30 °C. The material LC2-1 with stable wear performance is more applicable for being processed and manufactured into parts for low-temperature environmental conditions, as there is no serious fluctuation in the temperature range from −40 °C to room temperature. The research findings are expected to provide a theoretical support for hydraulic motors design, material selection and the maintenance of polar deck machinery. They are of great significance for improving the operational reliability of hydraulic motors for polar ships.

Abstract Abstract Background Axenfeld–Rieger syndrome (ARS) is a rare autosomal dominant hereditary disease characterized primarily by maldevelopment of the anterior segment of both eyes, accompanied by developmental glaucoma, and other congenital anomalies. FOXC1 and PITX2 genes play important roles in the development of ARS. Case presentation The present report describes a 7-year-old boy with iris dysplasia, displaced pupils, and congenital glaucoma in both eyes. The patient presented with a congenital atrial septal defect and sublingual cyst. The patient’s family has no clinical manifestations. Next generation sequencing identified a pathogenic heterozygous missense variant in FOXC1 gene (NM_001453:c. 246C>A, p. S82R) in the patient. Sanger sequencing confirmed this result, and this mutation was not detected in the other three family members. Conclusion To the best of our knowledge, the results of our study reveal a novel mutation in the FOXC1 gene associated with ARS.

Abstract In the production process for wooden furniture, the raw material costs account for more than 50% of furniture costs, and the utilization rate of raw materials depends mainly on the layout scheme. Therefore, a reasonable layout is an important measure to reduce furniture costs. This paper investigates the solid wood board cutting stock problem (CSP) and establishes an optimization model, with the goal of the highest possible utilization rate for original boards. An ant colony-immune genetic algorithm (AC-IGA) is designed to solve this model. The solutions of the ant colony algorithm are used as the initial population of the immune genetic algorithm, and the optimal solution is obtained using the immune genetic algorithm after multiple iterations are transformed into the accumulation of global pheromones, which improves the search ability and ensures the solution quality. The layout process of the solid wood board is abstracted into the construction process of the solution. At the same time, in order to prevent premature convergence, several improved methods, such as a global pheromone hybrid update and adaptive crossover probability, are proposed. Comparative experiments are designed to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the AC-IGA, and the experimental results show that the AC-IGA has better solution precision and global search ability compared with the ant colony algorithm (ACA), genetic algorithm (GA), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), and polar bear optimization (PBO). The utilization rate increased by more than 2.308%, which provides effective theoretical and methodological support for furniture enterprises to improve economic benefits.

Abstract Abstract. Wearable technology, which can continuously and remotely monitor physiological and behavioral parameters by incorporated into clothing or worn as an accessory, introduces a new era for ubiquitous health care. With big data technology, wearable data can be analyzed to help long-term cardiovascular care. This review summarizes the recent developments of wearable technology related to cardiovascular care, highlighting the most common wearable devices and their accuracy. We also examined the application of these devices in cardiovascular healthcare, such as the early detection of arrhythmias, measuring blood pressure, and detecting prevalent diabetes. We provide an overview of the challenges that hinder the widespread application of wearable devices, such as inadequate device accuracy, data redundancy, concerns associated with data security, and lack of meaningful criteria, and offer potential solutions. Finally, the future research direction for cardiovascular care using wearable devices is discussed.

Abstract Despite significant improvements in five-year survival rates due to early diagnosis and combination therapy, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) treatment remains a major challenge. Finding new and effective targets for diagnosis and drug therapy is urgent for TNBC patients. Jagged-1 (JAG1), one of the canonical ligands of the Notch signaling pathway, is involved in vascular budding and is a poor prognostic factor of TNBC. In this study, combined with quantitative real-time PCR, database analysis, animal experiments, and other means, JAG1 was confirmed to be related to the poor prognosis of TNBC patients. JAG1 was highly expressed in MDA-MB-231 Bone (231B) cells, with stronger invasion and metastasis ability than MDA-MB-231 (231) cells. Treatment of human vascular endothelial cells (HUVEC) with TNBC conditioned medium showed that TNBC JAG1 promoted the angiogenesis of HUVEC. Next, we detected the exosomes extracted from TNBC conditioned medium and found that JAG1 promoted the exosome secretion from 231 cells via ALIX-RAB11A/RAB35. In addition, we also found that the exosomes from JAG1 overexpressed TNBC cells contained more long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) MALAT1, and MALAT1 promoted angiogenesis of HUVEC by targeting miR-140-5p. Finally, the angiogenesis-promoting effect of JAG1 in TNBC was further investigated by matrix gel assay. In conclusion, we reveal that JAG1 has a pro-invasion effect on TNBC and is involved in microenvironment angiogenesis by promoting exosome secretion and the MALAT1-miR-140-5p-JAG1/VEGFA pathway.

Abstract The genome-wide long hairpin RNA interference (lhRNAi) library is an important resource for plant gene function research. Molecularly characterizing lhRNAi mutant lines is crucial for identifying candidate genes associated with corresponding phenotypes. In this study, a dwarf and sterile line named P198 was screened from the Brassica napus ( B. napus ) RNAi library. Three different methods confirmed that eight copies of T-DNA are present in the P198 genome. However, only four insertion positions were identified in three chromosomes using fusion primer and nested integrated polymerase chain reaction. Therefore, the T-DNA insertion sites and copy number were further investigated using Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing, and it was found that at least seven copies of T-DNA were inserted into three insertion sites. Based on the obtained T-DNA insertion sites and hairpin RNA (hpRNA) cassette sequences, three candidate genes related to the P198 phenotype were identified. Furthermore, the potential differentially expressed genes and pathways involved in the dwarfism and sterility phenotype of P198 were investigated by RNA-seq. These results demonstrate the advantage of applying ONT sequencing to investigate the molecular characteristics of transgenic lines and expand our understanding of the complex molecular mechanism of dwarfism and male sterility in B. napus .

Abstract Solid wood panels are widely used in the wood flooring and furniture industries, and paneling is an excellent material for indoor decoration. The classification of colors helps to improve the appearance of wood products assembled from multiple panels due to the differences in surface colors of solid wood panels. Traditional wood surface color classification mainly depends on workers’ visual observations, and manual color classification is prone to visual fatigue and quality instability. In order to reduce labor costs of sorting and to improve production efficiency, in this study, we introduced machine vision technology and an unsupervised learning technique. First-order color moments, second-order color moments, and color histogram peaks were selected to extract feature vectors and to realize data dimension reduction. The feature vector set was divided into different clusters by the K-means algorithm to achieve color classification and, thus, the solid wood panels with similar surface color were classified into one category. Furthermore, during twice clustering based on second-order color moment, texture recognition was realized on the basis of color classification. A sample of beech wood was selected as the research object, not only was color classification completed, but texture recognition was also realized. The experimental results verified the effectiveness of the technical proposal.

Abstract Colibactin is a genotoxin produced primarily by Escherichia coli harboring the genomic pks island ( pks + E. coli ). Pks + E. coli cause host cell DNA damage, leading to chromosomal instability and gene mutations. The signature of colibactin-induced mutations has been described and found in human colorectal cancer (CRC) genomes. An inflamed intestinal environment drives the expansion of pks + E. coli and promotes tumorigenesis. Mesalamine (i.e., 5-aminosalycilic acid), an effective anti-inflammatory drug, is an inhibitor of the bacterial polyphosphate kinase (PPK). This drug not only inhibits the production of intestinal inflammatory mediators and the proliferation of CRC cells, but also limits the abundance of E. coli in the gut microbiota and diminishes the production of colibactin. Here, we describe the link between intestinal inflammation and colorectal cancer induced by pks + E. coli . We discuss the potential mechanisms of the pleiotropic role of mesalamine in treating both inflammatory bowel diseases and reducing the risk of CRC due to pks + E. coli .
