Abstract The literature has long been debating whether it is high-income or low-income individuals who face higher risks of obesity. In this study I contend that this mixed record about the income-obesity relationship is the result of a failure to account fully for macro-level social contexts. The income-obesity relationship is not uniform in all societies but is conditioned by macro-level social contexts including the society's economic development and involvement in globalization. The 2011 Module on Health and Health Care of the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) provides an ideal opportunity for testing the complex income-obesity relationship in a cross-country setting. Employing multilevel models with cross-level interactions, this study finds that the shift in the effect of income from obesity-promoting to obesity-depressing is facilitated by both economic development and globalization. Under the combined forces of economic development and globalization, obesity increasingly becomes a burden of the poor in a society and the social distribution of obesity increasingly mirrors existing social inequality. Nevertheless, the economic development and globalization thresholds for shifting into a significant obesity-depressing effect of income are high.

Abstract Wind, hydropower, solar, and other renewable energy (RE) replace conventional energy sources when the global green and low-carbon transition is broadly considered. Therefore, the current study investigates the core determinants of renewable energy development (RED) in China from 1990 to 2020: carbon emissions efficiency (CEE), green finance (GF), urbanization (URB), openness (Op), and gross domestic product (GDP). However, advanced econometric techniques are used to investigate the desired objectives, such as an interactive fixed effects panel test, threshold panel regression, Pooled Mean Group, and Bootstrap Panel causality test. The research findings shows a negative association of CEE with renewable energy development. According to these findings, which are in line with the optimization method, it seems that RED is doing an outstanding job of reaching carbon neutrality. However, there found an increase in RED via green finance and economic growth over time. Also, a negative relationship exists between urbanization and openness with energy development. In comparison, zero-emission competition is expected to reshape the globe’s demographics.

Abstract Ben Cao Gang Mu (《本草纲目》 Compendium of Materia Medica) written by Li Shizhen (李时珍) was first introduced to Japan in the early 17th century and played an important role in the development of Japanese Material Medica and natural history in the Edo period. Tokugawa Ieyasu (德川家康), a shogun general, and Hayashi Razan (林罗山), a famous Confucianist in the Edo period, first recommended Ben Cao Gang Mu in Japan. Then, there emerged more scholars at herbal medicine in Japan who studied and taught Ben Cao Gang Mu through family teaching and master-apprenticeship training. Among them, the work of scholars such as Kaibara Ekiken (贝原益轩), Okamoto Ippou (冈本一抱), Matsuoka Gentatsu (松冈玄达), Ono Ranzan (小野蘭山), Iwasaki Kan-en (岩崎灌园), and Maeda Toshiyasu (前田利保) is of great significance to promote the wide communication and acceptance of Ben Cao Gang Mu in the Edo period in Japan. The rise of the Ben Cao Gang Mu in Japan fueled the development of Japanese herbal science and natural history to a new level.

Abstract Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease leading to various vascular diseases. Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) senescence promotes atherosclerotic inflammation and the formation of plaque necrosis core, in part through telomere damage mediated by a high-fat diet. Our previous research found that paeonol, a potential anti-inflammatory agent extracted from Cortex Moutan, could significantly improve VSMCs dysfunction. However, the impact of paeonol on the senescence of VSMCs remains unexplored. This study presents the protective effects of paeonol on VSMCs senescence, and its potential activity in inhibiting the progression of atherosclerosis in vivo and in vitro. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is a nuclear deacetylase involved in cell proliferation, senescence, telomere damage, and inflammation. Here, SIRT1 was identified as a potential target of paeonol having anti-senescence and anti-atherosclerosis activity. Mechanistic studies revealed that paeonol binds directly to SIRT1 and then activates the SIRT1/P53/TRF2 pathway to inhibit VSMCs senescence. Our results suggested that SIRT1-mediated VSMCs senescence is a promising druggable target for atherosclerosis, and that pharmacological modulation of the SIRT1/P53/TRF2 signaling pathway by paeonol is of potential benefit for patients with atherosclerosis.

Abstract Objective: To investigate the protective mechanisms of Chinese medicine Shexiang Tongxin Dropping Pills (STDP) on heart failure (HF).
Methods: Isoproterenol (ISO)-induced HF rat model and angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced neonatal rat cardiac fibroblast (CFs) model were used in the present study. HF rats were treated with and without STDP (3 g/kg). RNA-seq was performed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Cardiac function was evaluated by echocardiography. Hematoxylin and eosin and Masson's stainings were taken to assess cardiac fibrosis. The levels of collagen I (Col I) and collagen III (Col III) were detected by immunohistochemical staining. CCK8 kit and transwell assay were implemented to test the CFs' proliferative and migratory activity, respectively. The protein expressions of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), MMP-9, Col I, and Col III were detected by Western blotting.
Results: The results of RNA-seq analysis showed that STDP exerted its pharmacological effects on HF via multiple signaling pathways, such as the extracellular matrix (ECM)-receptor interaction, cell cycle, and B cell receptor interaction. Results from in vivo experiments demonstrated that STDP treatment reversed declines in cardiac function, inhibiting myocardial fibrosis, and reversing increases in Col I and Col III expression levels in the hearts of HF rats. Moreover, STDP (6, 9 mg/mL) inhibited the proliferation and migration of CFs exposed to Ang II in vitro (P<0.05). The activation of collagen synthesis and myofibroblast generation were markedly suppressed by STDP, also the synthesis of MMP-2 and MMP-9, as well as ECM components Col I, Col III, and α-SMA were decreased in Ang II-induced neonatal rats' CFs.
Conclusions: STDP had anti-fibrotic effects in HF, which might be caused by the modulation of ECM-receptor interaction pathways. Through the management of cardiac fibrosis, STDP may be a compelling candidate for improving prognosis of HF.

Abstract Crayfish, as an invertebrate, relies only on the innate immune system to resist external pathogens. In this study, a molecule containing a single Reeler domain was identified from red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (named as PcReeler). Tissue distribution analysis showed that PcReeler was highly expressed in gills and its expression was induced by bacterial stimulation. Inhibiting the expression of PcReeler by RNA interference led to a significant increase in the bacterial abundance in the gills of crayfish, and a significant increase in the crayfish mortality. Silencing of PcReeler influenced the stability of the microbiota in the gills revealed by 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing. Recombinant PcReeler showed the ability to bind microbial polysaccharide and bacteria and to inhibit the formation of bacterial biofilms. These results provided direct evidence for the involvement of PcReeler in the antibacterial immune mechanism of P. clarkii.

Abstract In order to explore the suitability evaluation of regional construction land in mountainous villages and towns, a method based on GIS technology is proposed. Supported by GIS and RS technology, the Delphi method is used to determine the natural, socioeconomic, and ecological security factors affecting the ecological suitability of regional construction land in mountainous villages and towns, and analytic hierarchy process is used to calculate the weight of relevant influencing factors. Following the principle of giving priority to ecological protection, a set of ecological suitability evaluation model system and method of regional construction land in mountainous villages and towns are established, based on which the basic ecological control areas of mountainous villages and towns in the study area are divided, so as to provide suggestions for rational and effective planning of land resources in mountainous villages and towns. The experimental results show that the K-means clustering method is divided into five categories: the most suitable land, the more suitable land, the basically suitable land, the unsuitable land, and the unavailable land. Finally, according to the suitability grade system of construction land, it is reclassified, the unsuitable land and unavailable land are divided into basic ecological control areas, the most suitable land and more suitable land are divided into construction control areas, and the basically suitable land is listed as ecological buffer areas. It is proved that the basic ecological control area determined by the model method is basically consistent with the current basic ecological control line of a city, which shows that the model is practical and scientific.

Abstract Objective. To perform a systematic evaluation of the clinical efficacy and safety of Zhenwu decoction (ZWD) for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Methods. PubMed, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), the China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), and the WanFang databases were searched, and a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were subsequently conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of ZWD combined with conventional Western medicine (CWM) to conventional therapy alone in the treatment of DN. The Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and GRADE criteria were utilized to assess the quality of the included literature, and RevMan 5.3 software was used for statistical analysis. Results. 13 randomized controlled trials were included, involving 1347 patients with diabetic nephropathy assigned into two subgroups according to the disease duration. The results revealed that compared with conventional therapy alone, ZWD combined with CWM treatment significantly improved the total effective rate (OR = 3.88, 95% CI = (2.87, 5.26), P < 0.00001). Furthermore, ZWD combination therapy also decreased fasting blood glucose (MD = −0.72, 95% CI = (−0.97, −0.48), P < 0.00001), BUN (MD = −1.92, 95% CI = (−3.19, −0.64), P = 0.003), 24-hour urine protein (MD = −0.48, 95% CI = (−0.57, −0.39), P < 0.00001), and serum creatinine levels (MD = −51.17, 95% CI = (−66.95, −35.39), P < 0.00001). However, there was no statistical significance in the effect of combination therapy on creatinine clearance (MD = −0.64, 95% CI = [−8.21,6.92], P = 0.87). However, there was no statistical significance in the effect of combination therapy oncreatinine clearance (MD =−0.64, 95% CI=[−8.21,6.92], P=0.87). Conclusion. ZWD combined with CWM outperformed conventional Western medicine in DN treatment. However, further investigations via multicenter RCTs with rigorous designs and higher quality are still ...

Abstract Objective. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, which is also accompanied by changes in blood lipids and protein. According to research reports, Ginseng-plus-Bai-Hu-Tang (GBHT) has significant antihyperglycemic activity. Nevertheless, the evidence of effectiveness is not enough. In order to verify the effectiveness and safety of GBHT combined with conventional Western medicine (CWM) in the treatment of T2DM, we carried out this meta-analysis. Method. We collected 7 electronic databases from the inception to September 1, 2021; then, 12 studies were selected. The data analysis and methodological evaluation were conducted by the software RevMan 5.3.3 and Stata 12.0. Results. The meta-analysis revealed that when GBHT was adopted in combination with CWM, the effective rate (OR = 2.98, 95% CI = [2.01, 4.43], P < 0.00001), the FBG (MD = −0.86, 95% CI = [−1.06, −0.65], P < 0.00001), 2hBG (MD = −0.80, 95% CI = [−1.05, −0.55], P < 0.00001), and HbA1c (MD = −0.64, 95% CI = [−0.98, −0.30], P = 0.0002) of T2DM patients improved significantly compared with the control group. After GBHT combined with CWM treatment, HOME-RI (MD = −0.75, 95% CI = [−1.38, −0.12] P = 0.02) of T2DM patients was superior to CWM alone. In comparison, the benefit from FINS (MD = −1.42, 95% CI = [−4.46, −1.62], P = 0.36) was not apparent. In addition, none of the adverse events mentioned occurred, indicating that it is safe enough. Conclusion. GBHT combined with CWM is an effective and safe as adjunctive treatment for patients with T2DM. Nevertheless, due to the limitation of the quality of the included studies, additional high-quality researches are required to further confirm these results.
