Abstract Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) boasts excellent thermal energy storage capabilities but lacks efficiency in thermal conductivity and solar absorption. Simultaneously, the escalating concern surrounding the substantial volume of discarded cotton fabric underscores environmental issues. In this study, we devised composite phase change materials (PCMs) by embedding PEG into a carbon cotton material (CCM), varying PEG content from 50 to 80%, and conducted a comprehensive analysis of their thermal properties and solar-to-thermal conversion. The CCM, crafted from a waste 100% cotton towel through carbonization, provided an optimal porous structure that accommodated a significant 70% PEG content without any leakage, thanks to interactions such as surface tension, capillary forces, and interfacial hydrogen bonds. These PEG/CCM composites exhibited impressive crystallization fractions (>92%), resulting in notable thermal energy storage capacities ranging from 85.3 to 143.2 J/g as the PEG content increased from 50 to 80%. Moreover, these composites showed high thermal stability and exceptional cycling durability even after 500 melting/crystallization cycles. Notably, their thermal conductivities markedly increased to a range of 0.46-0.85 W/m·K compared to pure PEG's modest 0.24 W/m·K. Furthermore, the PEG/CCM composites substantially augmented visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) light absorption. Evaluation of solar-to-thermal conversion illustrated the composite's ability to efficiently convert solar energy into thermal energy, storing and subsequently releasing it through melting and crystallization processes. This study introduces a novel class of composite PCMs characterized by cost-effectiveness, outstanding thermal performance, and impressive solar-to-thermal conversion capabilities. These composite PCMs hold significant promise for large-scale solar-to-thermal energy storage applications while contributing to the sustainability of cotton waste management.

Abstract Objective: To compare the effectiveness of inositol and metformin on the clinical characteristics, and endocrine and metabolic profiles of infertile polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) women from Vietnam. Methods: From June 2018 to August 2022, a randomized trial was undertaken at the Hue Center for Endocrinology and Reproduction on infertile women aged 18 to 40 years with polycystic ovarian syndrome. The clinical, endocrine, and metabolic features of these individuals were assessed before and after 3 months of treatment with 2 g of inositol or 1700 mg of metformin per day. Natural pregnancy rates, adverse effects, and tolerance of inositol were recorded. Results: The study included 171 infertile PCOS women who were eligible to participate and took part in the baseline assessment, of whom 132 women participated in data analysis after 3 months. After metformin treatment, 42.1% of women with oligomenorrhea experienced regular menstruation. Metformin significantly lowered body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and testosterone levels, but had no effect on other clinical characteristics, endocrine profiles, or metabolic profiles. 29.2% Of women reported experiencing side effects. 21% Of them attained pregnancy, which resulted in 17.1% of live births. In the inositol group, the rate of regular cycle increased by 18.2% and the total testosterone concentration significantly decreased. In overweight/obese women with PCOS, inositol significantly decreased weight, BMI, waist and hip circumferences (P<0.05). 100% Of women tolerated inositol and continued treatment. 18.9% Of them became pregnant, leading to 17% of live births. Conclusions: Metformin and inositol can improve weight and waist circumference in overweight/obese infertile women with PCOS. Metformin is associated with a higher rate of regular menstruation, whereas inositol is associated with a lower rate of adverse effects. The spontaneous conception, clinical pregnancy, and live birth rates between two groups are comparable.

Abstract Objective This study was performed to determine the effect of swim-up (SU) and density gradient centrifugation (DGC) on sperm survival and DNA fragmentation. Methods Individual semen samples were analyzed before each was divided into two aliquots (half for SU and half for DGC) for calculation of sperm survival and the DNA fragmentation index (DFI). Sperm DNA fragmentation was determined using the sperm chromatin dispersion test. Results The DFI of the 63 semen samples processed using both procedures was lower than that of the fresh semen samples. The DFI was significantly lower for samples processed using the SU than DGC method. In the sperm survival test, the SU technique was associated with increased sperm motility and vitality following preparation. After 24 hours, however, the concentration and percentage of surviving sperm were significantly lower in the SU than DGC group. Conclusions Both semen preparation techniques help to minimize sperm DNA fragmentation; however, when the DFI is <30%, the SU technique is more appropriate than DGC. While DGC may be superior for intrauterine insemination, the SU method may be preferable for in vitro fertilization or maturation.

Abstract Objective: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness and determine the optimal cut-off point of the ADNEX model in women presenting with a pelvic or adnexal tumor. Method: All women presented with adnexal mass and were scheduled for operation at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and Hue Central Hospital, Vietnam during June 2019 – May 2021 were included and categorized according to their histopathologic reports into ovarian cancer groups and benign ovarian tumor groups. Multivariable logistic regression was used to explore for potential predictors. The ADNEX model with and without CA125 was used to assess the risk of ovarian cancer preoperative. The goldden standard to evaluate the accuracy of ultrasonography using the ADNEX model was the pathological report. In addition, the accuracy as well as optimum cut-off point of the ADNEX model was estimated with and without CA125. Results: A total of 461 participants were included in analysis and predictive model development, 65 patients in ovarian cancer group and 361 in benign tumor group. The ADNEX model combined with CA125 proved to be a useful predictor with an area under ROC of 0.961 (0.940 – 0.977) with Youden’s index of 0.8395, p < 0.001. The ADNEX model without CA125 also had high predictive value between benign and malignant tumors, with an area under ROC of 0.956 (0.933 – 0.973) with Youden’s index of 0.8551, p < 0.001. Cut-off of the ADNEX with CA125 was 13.5 and without CA125 was 13.1 for sensitivities were 90.8 (81.0 – 96.5) and 93.9 (85.0 – 97.5), specificities 93.2 (90.2 – 95.5) and 91.67 (88.5 – 94.2). The difference in the predictive value of malignancy-risk between the ADNEX model with CA125, without CA125 was not statistically significant, p=0.4883. Conclusion: The ADNEX model, with or without the combining marker CA 125, provides a valuable predictive value for ovarian tumor malignancy preoperative.

Abstract Introduction: The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) is regarded as a self-administered screening questionnaire for assessing the presence of any type of sexual dysfunction. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Vietnamese translation version of the Female Sexual Function Index (VN-FSFI) in a sample of infertile Vietnamese women. Methods: An existing Vietnamese translated-FSFI version was used as a first-step approach to back-translate into English. Based on the comparison of the original English version and the back-translation script, a modified version of the FSFI was revised. This version was evaluated for “content validity” by a panel of 3 experts and for “face validity” by a pilot study that was based on its results to refine to reach the last Vietnamese FSFI version (VN-FSFI version). A cross-sectional survey to investigate psychometric reliability and validity of the last VN-FSFI version was conducted with 271 infertile Vietnamese women from January 2017 through February 2018, at a hospital located in a central region of Vietnam. Construct validity was evaluated by principal component analysis using varimax rotation and factor analysis. Reliability studies on internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, domain inter-correlations, and domain-total correlations) and on test-retest (Intraclass correlation coefficient). Main Outcome Measure: Construct validity and the reliability of the VN-FSFI version. Results: Based on principal component analysis, a 5-factor model was established, consisting of arousal/orgasm, satisfaction, pain, lubrication, and desire that explained 72.32% of the total variance. The factorial structure supported to 6 retrieved domains that corresponded to the original version. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were 0.92 for the total scale and 0.72−0.89 for the domains. Domain inter-correlations ranged from 0.36−0.73 and domain-total correlation coefficients ranged from 0.67−0.84. Test-retest correlation coefficients over 2−4 weeks were ...

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the impact of prolonged post-thaw embryos culture on pregnancy outcome during frozen embryo transfer cycles. Methods: This prospective cohort study evaluated 324 thaw transfer cycles with 819 embryos from 269 patients at the Center for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility of Hue University Hospital in Vietnam. These frozen embryo transfer cycles were divided into two groups at the time of thawing: the short culture group (2-hour post-thaw culture) and the overnight culture group (overnight culture for 18 h) before the embryo was transferred into the uterus. The rates of embryo intact, grade A embryo at frozen and transfer time and continuing cleavage were recorded. The clinical outcomes including serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin, clinical pregnancy and implantation rate were evaluated after 14 days, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, respectively, after embryo transfer. Results: Human chorionic gonadotropin positive occurred in 39.5% of patients in the short culture group compared to 25.9% in the overnight culture group with risk difference (RD)=13.6%, relative risk (RR)=1.343, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.085-1.663, P<0.01. Clinical pregnancy rate of the short culture group and overnight culture group was 33.3% and 24.1%, respectively (RD=9.2%, RR=1.242, 95% CI 0.996-1.549, P =0.06) and the implantation rate in the short culture group and overnight culture group was 16.5% and 11.0%, respectively (RD=5.5%, RR=1.244, 95% CI 1.046-1.479, P =0.01). In women of advanced age (>35 years) and women who received 3 embryos, pregnancy outcomes were found to be significantly (P <0.05) higher in the short culture than in the overnight culture group. Conclusions: The prolonged post-thaw culture period does not increase pregnancy outcome in comparison with the short culture.
