Abstract Economic growth is essential, though not sufficient, for poverty reduction in developing countries. Research based on many different approaches and including both cross-country and intra-country studies shows that international trade can contribute to economic growth, and thus can help many poor people escape poverty. However, the domestic environment has to be conducive to realizing the poverty-reduction benefits of increased trade. Complementary domestic policies and institutions needed include regulations that foster labor mobility, adequate financial development, and good public infrastructure.

Abstract Using eight rounds of the Vietnam Household Living Standards Surveys (VHLSSs) spanning 16 years and exploiting the US-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) in 2001 as a large export shock, we investigate the impact of this shock on intergenerational occupational mobility in Vietnam employing a difference-in-differences research design. Our analysis suggests that the BTA has led to substantial upward occupational mobility, allowing both sons and daughters to have better occupations than their parents, with the effects being larger for daughter-mother pairs. The effect is larger in the long-run compared to the short-run. We find evidence that the driving force is an increase in skill demand via gender-biased expansion in export volumes. The effects are largely driven by intersectoral resource reallocation rather than within-sector upgrades. In addition, the BTA induced a higher likelihood of college education for both sons and daughters, but of vocational training only for sons. Overall, the BTA shock accounts for 36% of the overall increase in mobility for both genders. Our results control for Vietnam's own tariff reductions, which do not seem to have any statistically significant impact on mobility.

Abstract IIndia’s economy today is much larger than what it was half a century ago, with most of that growth occurring since the early 1990s—an indication that it has flourished in the postglobalization phase. Since 1991, GDP growth has averaged 6 percent, with the rate hitting close to 9 percent in recent years (before the recent slowdown in the last couple of years to roughly 5 percent). While some modest “business-friendly” reforms in the 1980s resulted in higher growth rates relative to the earlier years (Rodrik and Subramanian 2005), the big economic reforms were announced in 1991. What is behind India’s rapid growth in the past two decades? At the sectoral level, we see that, unlike emerging economies like China and South Korea, the big push in India has come from an expanding services sector, rather than an expanding (labor-intensive) manufacturing sector. Keep in mind that in the early 1960s, India and South Korea had similar growth rates. When India became independent in 1947, more than half of its GDP came from agriculture—a share that has dropped considerably over time to less than 15 percent today.
