    Abstract We develop a transient photoinduced Kerr rotation spectroscopy technique using a heterodyne detection scheme to study spin dynamics of microscopic quantum states in solids, such as single quantum dots and spin helixes. The use of the heterodyne beat note signal generated by the interference of the frequency-shifted probe and reference pulses realizes the Kerr rotation measurements in combination with micro-spectroscopy, even when the probe pulse propagates collinearly with the strong pump pulse, which resonantly excites the probing state. In addition, the interference gives an optical amplification of the Kerr signal, which provides a clear observation of the photoinduced spin dynamics by the weak probe intensity. Here, we present results of Kerr rotation measurements for a single quantum dot exciton, which shows a maximum rotation angle of few µrad.

    Abstract Recently, much research concerning the combination of nano-scale waveguides with nano-crystals and other nano-particles has been reported because of possible applications in the field of quantum information and communication. The most useful and convenient method to verify the nature of such systems is optical detection. However, due to the diffraction limit, optical identification of characteristics such as particle type, particle position, etc., is difficult or impossible. However, if such particles are placed on a waveguide, the coupling of scattered light to the waveguide-guided modes can reveal the information about the particles. Here we consider how illumination with light of arbitrary polarization can reveal the difference between isotropic and non-isotropic nano-particles placed on the surface of an optical nanofiber. Specifically, we measure the polarization response function of gold nano-rods (GNRs) on an optical nanofiber surface and show that it is qualitatively different to that for gold nano-spheres (GNSs). This experimental technique provides a simple new tool for the optical characterization of hybrid nano-optical devices.

    Abstract Open reconstruction of superior mesenteric artery aneurysms is very difficult, especially if the lesion is extensive. Aneurysmal lesions were found in a 74-year-old woman during a medical checkup. Computed tomography scan showed a 6.8-cm aneurysm arising 4 cm distal to the superior mesenteric artery origin, in succession to a 2.7-cm aneurysm, and further distal small aneurysms with string-of-beads appearance. The first, second, and third jejunoileal arteries, the middle colic artery, and the ileocolic artery were originated from the aneurysms. Open reconstruction was done using a branched saphenous vein graft. Computed tomography scan confirmed the patency of the grafts. She had no major troubles for another 4 years.

    Abstract Polarization is one of the fundamental properties of light, providing numerous applications in science and technology. While 'dynamically unpolarized' single-photon sources are demanded for various quantum applications, such sources have never been explored. Here we demonstrate dynamically unpolarized single-photon emission from a single [111]-oriented nitrogen- vacancy centre in diamond, in which the single-photon stream is unpolarized, exhibiting intrinsic randomness with vanishing polarization correlation between time adjacent photons. These properties not only allow true random number generation, but may also enable fundamental tests in quantum physics.

    Abstract Two port optical devices couple light to either port dependent on the input photon state. An important class of two-port devices is that of evanescently-coupled interfaces where chirality of photon coupling can lead to important technological applications. Here, we perform a fundamental characterization of such an interface, reconstructing the two-port polarization response over the surface of the Poincaré sphere for an optical nanofibre. From this result, we derive a chirality measure which is universal, obeying a one parameter scaling law independent of the exact parameters of the nanofibre and wavelength of light. Additionally, we note that the polarization response differs qualitatively for single and multiple coupled emitters, with possible implications for sensing and the characterization of waveguide coupled spins.

    Abstract Objectives This study aimed to develop scales for evaluating the level of implementation of community practices and explore the perception of public health nurses in municipalities regarding their community practices.Methods Draft scales were developed based on a literature review and interviews with municipal public health nurses. Subsequently, a questionnaire survey was conducted with municipal public health nurses across Japan in response to these draft scales. Respondents were recruited based on the municipality population size. Questionnaires were distributed to 2,074 individuals from 52 municipalities ensuring representation from diverse municipalities. Exploratory factor analysis was performed to determine the number of factors, while confirmatory factor analysis was performed to determine the factor structure. The reliability of the scales was assessed by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficients, and their validity was tested by examining correlations with existing scales, namely the Moral Competence Scale for Public Health Nurses and the Professional Identity Scale for Public Health Nurses, and years of experience as a public health nurse.Results A total of 721 (34.8%) valid respondents were included in the analysis. Three scales, methods of community practices (three factors, nine items), perceptions of public health nurses toward community residents through community practices (three factors, 10 items), and organizational environment supporting community practices (two factors, 11 items) were developed as indicators of the implementation of public health nurses' community practices. Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the three scales were 0.896, 0.913, and 0.868, respectively. As hypothesized, each subfactor exhibited a positive correlation with the existing scales. However, certain subfactors did not demonstrate any correlation with years of experience.Conclusion The three scales developed in this study were individually examined for reliability and validity. These scales can be used independently or in combination, allowing public health nurses to select the most suitable scale(s) based on their objective. A notable contribution of this study is the establishment of concrete indicators for evaluating community practices, addressing the previously vague nature of this evaluation. By incorporating the scale items into daily health practices, we anticipate that these indicators can be employed to evaluate community practices at the organizational and individual levels.

    Abstract Tailoring spectral properties of photon pairs is of great importance for optical quantum information and measurement applications. High-resolution spectral measurement is a key technique for engineering spectral properties of photons, making them ideal for various quantum applications. Here we demonstrate spectral measurements and optimization of frequency-entangled photon pairs produced via spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC), utilizing frequency-resolved sum-frequency generation (SFG), the reverse process of SPDC. A joint phase-matching spectrum of a nonlinear crystal around 1580 nm is captured with a 40 pm resolution and a > 40 dB signal-to-noise ratio, which is significantly improved compared to traditional frequency-resolved coincidence measurements. Moreover, our scheme is applicable to collinear degenerate sources whose characterization is difficult with previously demonstrated stimulated difference frequency generation (DFG). We also illustrate that the observed phase-matching function is useful for finding an optimal pump spectrum to maximize the spectral indistinguishability of SPDC photons. We expect that our precise spectral characterization technique will be useful tool for characterizing and tailoring SPDC sources for a wide range of optical quantum applications.

    Abstract Enhanced manipulation and analysis of bio-particles using light confined in nano-scale dielectric structures has proceeded apace in the last several years. Small mode volumes, along with the lack of a need for bulky optical elements give advantages in sensitivity and scalability relative to conventional optical manipulation. However, manipulation of lipid vesicles (liposomes) remains difficult, particularly in the sub-micron diameter regime. Here we demonstrate the optical trapping and transport of sub-micron diameter liposomes along an optical nanofiber using the nanofiber mode's evanescent field. We find that nanofiber diameters below a nominal diffraction limit give optimal results. Our results pave the way for integrated optical transport and analysis of liposome-like bio-particles, as well as their coupling to nano-optical resonators.

    Abstract Background: The recent Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident was one of more than 200 serious nuclear/radiation incidents (accidents and disasters) that occurred worldwide since 1945. The current Fukushima disaster is in the recovery phase with the decreasing levels of radiation in the environment. However, fears and stigma related to the perceived risk of radiation exposure persist among the general population.
    Introduction: To improve on students' preparedness for social and public health challenges after a radiation incidence, radiation education was provided for undergraduate public health nursing students.
    Aim: This case study reports the development and implementation of the first class of radiation education in public health nursing, as well as students' reflections on their class experience.
    Methods: We included a 90-min radiation class in an undergraduate public health nursing course in Tokyo, Japan. Lectures/discussion on technical and environmental aspects provided the minimally essential content for basic radiation knowledge. After class, all the 65 students were invited to freely write their reflections on the class. With their consent, 61 students' anonymous written accounts were qualitatively analysed.
    Results: Five themes emerged: awareness of ignorance about radiation, problems produced by the mass media, becoming knowledgeable about radiation, public health nurses' role, and trustful and enjoyable lecture.
    Discussion: The class inspired students to consider social, psychological and relational aspects of knowing and not knowing about radiation and their future professional role.
    Conclusion and implications for nursing: Once radiation is taught at school, nursing students will emerge as professionals with the belief that radiation is within their professional purview. Education is key to disaster prevention, preparation, response and recovery. Given the ubiquitous nature of health challenges after a radiation incident, radiation education is indispensable for nursing students worldwide.

    Abstract Objectives The purpose of this study was to define the terminology used in community health activities by systematically establishing agreement among public health nurses and related professionals, to aid them in effectively cooperating with other professionals.Methods We extracted the major terms described in "Guidelines for Public Health Nurses' Activities in the Region," which was issued by the Director of Health Bureau, Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare; and conducted 2 iterations on the proposed definition of the terms using the Delphi method. The survey targeted 800 stakeholders from the following 4 professions: public health nurses in managerial positions in local governments, clerical staff in local governments, public health nursing professors at educational institutions, and social welfare council staff. Respondents indicated their degree of agreement with the definition of the terms using a 4-point Likert scale. We tallied the answers indicating "I agree" or "Mostly agree." A 70% term agreement was considered "conformed." A free text box for each proposed definition was also available so that respondents could share their opinions and offer alternatives.Results The first survey received 231 responses. The conformity of their definitions ranged from 83.9%-96.9% (mean=91.5%). Although all definitions exceeded the consensus level, we examined their adequacy with reference to the definitions and opinions from the free text. Various opinions were obtained from those engaged in each occupation. The second round included 117 consenting stakeholders from the first survey, yielding 90 responses. Their degree of conformity ranged from 86.7%-98.9% (mean=94.6%). Therefore, we determined the definitions had reached a robust agreement. We revised the definitions of some terms with reference to the opinions from the free texts and finalized the definitions. Finally, we defined 23 terms-such as region, community diagnosis, and policy.Conclusion All terms had a conformity of more than 85%, thus bringing into alignment those community health terms that had varying interpretations among related occupations earlier. By including the opinions of those from the related occupations who collaborate with public health nurses, the definitions of these terms could be established and shared. These definitions can be used in public health nursing practice, education, service, and research-among those in involved these related occupations.
