Abstract Background: One of the most common cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in the world is myocardial infarction (MI). By analyzing electrocardiogram and vectorcardiography (VCG) signals, it is possible to identify and characterize heart diseases such as MI. One of the new methods of detection is the use of spatio-temporal parameters of VCG signals. This study aimed to correctly distinguish healthy signals from patients, achieve acceptable accuracy, and show the benefits of VCG and its application as a method to cover the shortcoming of electrocardiography. Methods: In this study, in addition to applying electrocardiogram signals in the time domain, spatio-temporal patterns of VCG signals were used to identify 80 patients with MI, and differentiate them from 80 healthy individuals. Findings: When combining the 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG) and the 3-lead VCG features applied to the Feedforward Neural Network classifier input, an accuracy of 91.2%, specificity of 92.6%, and specificity of 90% were obtained. The results were in higher values than when applied separately. Conclusion: The observations indicate that combined ECG and VCG methods can be effective in distinguishing MI cases from healthy cases. It is hoped that this method may be useful in the clinical evaluation and heart failure diagnosis.

Abstract Background: Cardiovascular disease is the most common disease of the century and is considered as a major cause of mortality and heart failure in industrial and semi-industrial societies. Using electrical signals produced by the heart muscle have an important role in the recognition and diagnosis of heart diseases. Methods: In this study, the signal recorded via vectorcardiography using an electrode arrangement called Frank, and electrocardiography were performed; a limited number of signals available in the database of the National Metrology Institute of Germany (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt or PTB) were also used. At the end, the data in each field vectorcardiography and electrocardiographic were assessed and compared. In order to make better use of time and optimize signal analysis, feature extraction operation was performed in the wavelet domain; and then, reducing the characteristics and classification were performed using support vector machine technique. Findings: There were the accuracy of 83.18% and the validity of 99.06% in vectorcardiography leads and the accuracy of 75.44% and the validity of 97.16% in electrocardiographic leads. Conclusion: Based on support vector machine classification system, the properties of the Frank system leads tended to better results than conventional 12-leads electrocardiogram (ECG).

Abstract Background: Fibrocyte-specific protein, otospiralin, is a small protein, widely expressed in the central nervous system as neuronal cell bodies and glia. The increased expression of otospiralin in reactive astrocytes implicates its role in signaling pathways and reparative mechanisms subsequent to injury. Indeed, otospiralin is considered to be essential for the survival of fibrocytes of the mesenchymal nonsensory regions of the cochlea. It seems that other functions of this protein are not yet completely understood. Materials and Methods: Amino acid sequences of otospiralin from 12 vertebrates were derived from National Center for Biotechnology Information database. Phylogenetic analysis and phylogeny estimation were performed using MEGA 5.0.5 program, and neighbor-joining tree was constructed by this software. Results: In this computational study, the phylogenetic tree of otospiralin has been investigated. Therefore, dendrograms of otospiralin were depicted. Alignment performed in MUSCLE method by UPGMB algorithm. Also, entropy plot determined for a better illustration of amino acid variations in this protein. Conclusion: In the present study, we used otospiralin sequence of 12 different species and by constructing phylogenetic tree, we suggested out group for some related species.

Abstract Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is rated as the second cause of cancer death worldwide. Selenium (Se) has antioxidant activity and antitumor effect, especially in colon cancer. This important role occurs through selenoproteins. Low Se intake or low plasma Se and selenoproteins concentrations are associated with higher risk of CRC. rs7579 polymorphism in 3' untranslated region of the SEPP1 gene can effect on selenocysteine incorporation during protein synthesis and also effect on microRNA -messengerRNA interaction and sequentially change in SEPP1 expression. rs34713741 polymorphism as a promoter variant in selenoprotein S (SELS) gene can effect on SElS expression and finally lead to increased CRC risk. Methods: A case-control study using 60 CRC patients and 74 noncancerous counterparts were undertaken in order to determine rs7579 and rs34713741 genotypes using real-time polymerase chain reaction high-resolution melting method. Results: We found an association of borderline statistical significance between allele A for rs7579 in SEPP 1 and CRC risk (adjusted odds ratio = 1.63; confidential interval = 0.99-2.07; P = 0.05). The frequency of genotypes rs34713741 of the mentioned polymorphisms was not significantly different between case and control groups (P = 0.23 and P = 0.93, respectively). Conclusions: The results suggest that these polymorphisms probably has not a substantial role in Iranian CRC risk and is not a serious potential factor in risk assessment of mentioned disease among Iranians.

Abstract Objective(s):Anodized treated titanium surfaces, have been proposed as potential surfaces with better cell attachment capacities. We have investigated the adhesion and proliferation properties of H9C2 cardiac myoblasts on anodized treated titanium surface. Materials and Methods: Surface topography and anodized tubules were examined by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Control and test substrates were inserted to the bottom of 24-well tissue culture plates. Culture media including H9C2 cells were loaded on the surface of substrate and control wells at the second passage. Evaluation of cell growth, proliferation, viability and surface cytotoxicity was performed using MTT test. After 48 hr, some samples were inspected by SEM. DAPI-staining was used to count attached cells. Results: MTT results for cells cultured on anodized titanium and unanodized titanium surfaces was equal to 1.56 and 0.55 fold change compared to tissue culture polystyrene (TCPS). The surface had no cytotoxic effects on cells. The average cell attachment to TCPS, unanodized and anodized titanium surface was 2497±40.16, 1250±20.11 and 4859.5±54.173, respectively. Cell adhesion to anodized titanium was showed 1.95 and 3.89 fold increase compared to TCPS and unanodized titanium, respectively (P

Abstract Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic auto-immune disease. Most therapeutic strategies for treatment of this disease direct immune modulation and control of inflammatory processes. First-line therapeutic agents showed moderate efficacy and frequent side-effects with moderate efficacy in trials. Their parental administration and limited long-term adherence restrict their efficacy compared with second-line therapies. Fingolimod as a second-line therapeutic agent has been shown to reduce annualized relapse rate, risk of disability progression and inflammatory activity of relapsing MS. Safety and efficacy FTY720: Safety and efficacy issues are the main metrics for judgment of drug efficacy. In this article, we focus on cardiovascular effects of FTY720 treatment. Effect of FTY720 on rate and rhythm, impact of FTY720 on endothelial cells, its atheroprotective effects, its effects on cardiac transplantation outcomes, vascular complications of FTY720, effects of FTY720 on endocrine functions and interaction of FTY720 with cardioactive agents are explained in this review article.

Abstract Background: Various techniques are used in diagnosing cardiac diseases, one of those is using electrocardiogram tool. In special situations, like ambulatory care and emergency condition, using vectorcardiogram (VCG) regarding its fewer electrodes is much easier and more useful. However, most cardiologists are accustomed to the 12-lead electrocardiogram, even though some of the leads are either nearly aligned with or derived from the others and consequently contain redundant information. The ability to transform from orthogonal 3-lead vectorcardiogram to 12-lead electrocardiogram enables the use of fewer leads for computer visualization, signal analysis and wireless transmission of signals. This can also improve mobility, albeit limited, to the patients. Methods: Vectorcardiogram and electrocardiogram signals used in this study obtained from 50 healthy persons. We presented a statistical approach to transform 3-lead Frank vectorcardiogram to 12-lead electrocardiogram signals and vice versa, based on partial linear transformation (Least Square Method). In addition, our linear transformation function would be compared with Dower and affine transformation function. Findings: For healthy subjects, the partial linear transformation method had different transformation coefficients from other existed methods like Dower and affine ones. Using these new coefficients in partial linear method lead to gain more accurate statistical parameters in calculating the efficiency and accuracy of new method. Conclusion: Regarding the obtained results in this study, electrocardiogram signals derived from vectorcardiogram signals by using our method had more correlation with general electrocardiogram leads than ones derived by using Dower transformation. Therefore, by using this transformation function, achieving to general information of the case’s heart would be possible and useful.
