Abstract Land use in the subhumid zone (SHZ) of Nigeria is rapidly changing as a result of increasing influx of both arable farmers and pastoralists from areas of high density in the country. Because land is owned by arable farming communities, traditional grazing lands tend to be heavily pressurized by increasing settled and nomadic animals. Long-term well being of the livestock industry in the SHZ will therefore depend on the integration of fodder and crop production. Methods of improving fodder through use of Stylosanthes in agropastoral systems is described in the cropping and fallowlands areas. As crop and livestock enterprises are normally handled by separate ethnic groups, the need to demonstrate direct benefits to cropping through adoption of a forage legume in cropping patterns is suggested as an incentive to invest in fooder improvement in arable areas. The need for screening other legumes for agropastoral production systems is emphasized because of the vulnerability of the available stylo cultivars to anthracnose.

Abstract Lists seven steps involved in the establishment of a fodder bank package based on experimental results and literature. Presents data on intial productivity of stylosanthes fodder banks under researcher-managed and farmes-excuted trials using the seven steps, and the effect of land preparation and seed dressing on stand count/m2 of stylo cook 6 weeks after planting. Discusses the utilisation for supplementary grazing and the regeneration of fodder banks.

Abstract The important position and role of mixed farming systems in land use intensification in subSaharan Africa is reviewed. This is done by examining the current situation that is followed with a justification for mixed farming. Further sections follow on changing patterns of land use, including the effects of tsetse flies and trypanosomiasis, and on constraints to further crop-livestock integration. Research needs are considered in a final section with particular emphasis on biophysical factors (feed development, nutrient management, dualpurpose livestock, animal health, genetic improvement and natural resource management) and policy analysis.

Abstract Undersowing sorghum with stylo as a means of improving fodder quality for dry-season grazing of livestock in the subhumid zone of Nigeria was investigated. Planting either Stylosanthes guianeusis cv 'Cook' or S. hamata cv 'Verano' simultaneously with local or improved varieties of sorghum reduced grain yield by over 70%, but the loss was overcome or minimized by delayed planting of the stylo by 3-6 weeks. Improvement in quality of the resulting fodder from fodder from stylo planted between weeks three and six after the sorghum crop made up or even increased the total value of production per area of land. Stylo yield was very much reduced if planted six weeks later than the cereal croUndersowing at the appropriate time is considered to be a way of improving the quality of crop residues in an agro-pastoral community without extra demands on labour.

Abstract For societies that depend on agriculture, the process of meeting current or future welfare demands should not continue without regard to the potential long-term dangers of land resource over-use. With an increasing human and animal population in the Ethiopian highlands development efforts so far have been hasty and disjointed, and have sidetracked issues of production base security and conservation. As a result, large-scale degradation has ensued, and if the trend continues the agricultural future of the country is threatened. Cohesive land-use practices are needed in order to manage the fragile Ethiopian highland resource environment properly and to support growing human demands.

Abstract The paper identifies poverty and malnutrition, low crop and livestock productivity, widespread land degradation and underutilization of some resources as a major problem of highlands. To tackle these problems, a systems approach to research has been adapted and research has been conducted under the following themes: intentional food/feed production strategies, feed utilisation strategies, livestock mediated soil, water and nutrient management strategies, and spatial integration of system improvement strategies. Specific experimental work done and results achieved are summarised along with a note on future directions.
