    Abstract Abstract Introduction Understanding the mechanisms and identifying effective treatments for the COVID-19 outbreak are imperative. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the antioxidant status and oxidative stress parameters as potential pivotal mechanisms in asymptomatic, non-severe, and severe COVID-19 patients. Methods This study is a case–control study that was performed on patients referred to the Persian Gulf Martyrs Hospital of Bushehr University of Medical Sciences, Bushehr, Iran, from May 2021 to September 2021. A total of 600 COVID-19 patients (non-severe and severe group) and 150 healthy volunteers of the same age and sex were selected during the same period. On the first day of hospitalization, 10 ml of venous blood was taken from subjects. Then, hematological, biochemical, serological, antioxidant and oxidative stress parameters were determined. Results Our results indicated that ESR, CRP, AST, ALT, and LDH significantly augmented in the severe group as compared to the non-severe and normal groups (P ≤ 0.05). It was observed that the levels of FRAP, G6PD activity, and SOD activity significantly reduced in the non-severe patients in comparison with the severe and normal groups (P ≤ 0.05). We found that MDA content and NO metabolite markedly increased in severe patients as compared to the non-severe group. Conclusions Taken together, it seems that the balance between antioxidants and oxidants was disturbed in COVID-19 patients in favor of oxidant markers. In addition, this situation caused more aggravation in severe patients as compared to the non-severe group.

    Abstract Introduction: Statin family drugs are lipid-lowering agents with anti-inflammatory effects. Objectives: The aim of our study was to evaluate anti-inflammatory effects of different statins in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Patients and Methods: Around 161 eligible subjects with rheumatoid arthritis were enrolled. They randomly were divided into three groups. The first group received 40 mg/daily atorvastatin, the second group received 40 mg/daily simvastatin, and the third group received placebo as control for six months. To calculate the disease activity, DAS-28 (Disease Activity Score 28) was used while VAS (visual analog scale) was used to assess the severity of pain in rheumatoid arthritis patients. DAS-28, erythrocyte sedimentation rates (ESR) and lipid profiles were assessed once for the baseline and then after three and six months of intervention. Data was analyzed by SPSS by a P value <0.05 which was set to be significant. Results: DAS-28 score in months 0, 3 and 6 in atorvastatin, simvastatin and placebo groups was (5.36 ± 1.02, 3.23±1.24 and 2.81±1.13), (5.29±0.87, 2.75±1.16 and 2.57±1.00) and (5.52±0.96, 3.90±1.10 and 3.87±1.52), respectively. Mean of DAS-28 score differences between placebo and atorvastatin groups was 0.6±0.16 (P<0.01); the score differences between simvastatin and placebo was 0.900±0.16 that was significant (P<0.01), however, the score differences was not significant between atorvastatin and simvastatin groups (P=0.261). Conclusion: Statins decrease inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis patients

    Abstract Background: Hepatitis B virus infection (HBV) and its complications is one of the most serious problems of the health system in many parts of the world. In the present study, we will assess chronic and occult HBV and isolated anti-Hepatitis B core antigen whose screening and evaluation is not routine in different populations. Materials and Methods: This descriptive analytical study was conducted on 213 patients undergoing chemotherapy - radiotherapy referred to the hematology - oncology clinics of Isfahan, Iran in 2012. In order to determine the serum levels of hepatitis B surface antigen (HbSAg), Hepatitis B Antigen and Antibody (HBCAb), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT) and Alkaline phosphatase (ALK.P), venous blood samples were obtained. If the HBCAb sample was positive, another sample of the serum was sent to the laboratory to perform polymerase chain reaction and to determine viral load. Results: The mean age of the patients was 47.7 ± 9 years, with an age range of 27 -73 years; 98 (46%) and 115 (54%) cases were male and female, respectively, with mean age of 51.9 ± 8.3 and 44.1 ± 8.1 years, and there was no significant difference (P < 0.001). The mean level of liver enzymes including AST, ALT and ALK.P were 34.2 ± 36.02, 38.9 ± 47.1 and 252.1 ± 234.7, respectively. Two cases were HbSAg positive (0.9%) and six cases were HBCAb positive (2.8%) and HbSAg negative. Three cases had a high viral load at the rate of starting treatment among positive anti-HBC patients. Conclusion: Because occult hepatitis is investigated less commonly in routine studies, it seems that screening and evaluating its prevalence is useful in the management of patients.
