Abstract Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterized by the recurrence of seizures, which can significantly impact the lives of patients. Electroencephalography (EEG) can provide important physiological information on human brain activity which can be useful to diagnose epilepsy. However, manual analysis and visual inspection of many EEG signals can be time-consuming and may lead to contradictory diagnoses by doctors. EEG signals play an important role in the diagnosis of epilepsy, as the quantification of cerebral signal anomalies may indicate the condition and the pathology of the cerebral signal. In this study, we attempted to develop a two-step process for the automated diagnosis of epilepsy using EEG signals. In the first step, we applied a low-pass filter and designed three intermediate filters for different frequency bands, employing multi-layer neural networks. In the second step, we used a wavelet transform method to process the data. The characteristics of the local brain are the distribution of epileptic EEG activity in the wavelet model across the whole brain surface. We also evaluated the use of two different classifiers, an artificial neural network (ANN) and a support vector machine (SVM), for the diagnosis of epilepsy. These classifiers were trained on normal and epileptic data and were able to accurately distinguish between normal and epilepsy as well as other conditions. We also found that the use of the wavelet transform did not significantly affect the classification performance but using a multi-layer neural network provided better precision. In this study, we developed a two-step automated process; incorporating low-pass filters, intermediate filters, multi-layer neural networks, and wavelet transform led to an accurate and efficient diagnosis of epilepsy. The results of this paper show high accuracy rates for both the artificial neural network (92.38%) and the support vector machine (95.5%) classifiers. Moreover, the study highlighted the effectiveness of utilizing a multi-layer neural ...

Abstract Background: Microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a promising biological soil improvement method in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering, which requires the recognition of the effects of various treatment methods on its applications. Methods: To improve the efficiency of MICP by urea hydrolysis bacteria, bio-grouting experiments were conducted at low urease activity using laboratory sand columns, and injection scenarios with different procedure steps were performed. The scenarios varied in the incubation time, fixation fluid, and number of the injection steps, and their efficiency was assessed using the unconfined compressive strength test. Results: The sand column experiments with multistep injection of bacteria and cementation solution showed that when the precipitated calcium carbonate content increased from 7.7% to 18.9%, the strength of the samples enhanced from 0.25 to 1.55 MPa, respectively. The precipitation conditions were influenced by the sand grain properties. The samples with diversified particle sizes had greater strength than those with uniform particle sizes. The multistep cementation solution injection at various concentrations had a significant clogging effect, thereby decreasing the sand column permeability. Conclusion: According to the laboratory results, this innovative technique could be potentially practical for engineering applications, such as liquefaction prevention, clogging, and sand in oil reservoir consolidation.

Abstract Piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) provide a viable solution to convert the mechanical energy generated by body movement to electricity. One-dimensional yarns offer a platform for flexible wearable textile PENGs, which can conform to body for comfort and efficient energy harvesting. In this context, we report a flexible piezoelectric yarn, assembled by one-step cocentric deposition of cesium lead halide perovskite decorated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers, on a stainless-steel yarn. Abstract Design of a robust Face Recognition (FR) system is greatly affected due to varying illumination and pose conditions. The accuracy of FR system can be increased by normalizing and compensating the illumination variations in the pre-processing stage. To improve the robustness of FR systems against illumination variations, a method is proposed in this study which is based on Contourlet Transform (CT), hybrid of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Imperialist Competition Algorithm (ICA) techniques for feature reduction, and an ICA-optimized Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) classifier. First, each face is decomposed using the CT. So, the contourlet coefficients of low and high frequency in different scales and various angles are obtained. The frequency coefficients are employed as a feature vector for further processing. The PCA is then used to reduce the dimensionality of the feature vector. The ICA is also exploited to search the feature space for an optimal feature subset. Then, the reduced-size feature vector is applied to the face classifier that is based on MLP neural network whose structure and learning rate are optimized by ICA. The proposed method is robust to variation of imaging conditions and pose variations. The proposed technique provides better results when tested on ORL and Extended Yale-B databases as compared with other existing techniques such as hybrid model based on discrete wavelet transform and PCA (in terms of precision, sensitivity, and accuracy) and different state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract Given the lapse of nearly three decades of enforcement of interest-free banking law in Iran and emergence broad developments in the banking system, scientific and empirical researches are necessary to adapting performance of interest-free banking to banking regulations and Shari`a rules and principles. The prohibition of usury, not squander of wealth in vanity, no loss-no hurt, prevention of deceive and non-superficial transactions are some of these rules. This paper deals with identifying and introducing superficial transactions in order to evaluating performance of non-usury banking system. This issue is of great importance since the performance of non-usury banking in granting facilities has resulted in superficial contracts between two transacting parts (bank staff and facility demanders) in three latter decades. Thus, introducing quantitative indicators seems necessary to cope banking system activities with Shari`a criteria and principles. The research method relying library sources is descriptive and content analysis, in which indicators for superficial transactions are estimated using survey study. The hypothesis of this paper is that, more than half of bank transactions at branches of Tejarat Bank of Mashhad are superficial. The statistical population consists of all contracts among branches of Tejarat Bank of Mashhad and bank customers during 2009-2010. Using cluster sampling, a sample with 451 customers, who get bank facilities, was selected. Although the principle of non-interest banking operations fully comply with the holy Shari`a, but the results of the estimation of indicators for superficial transactions indicate that more than half of bank transactions at branches of Tejarat Bank of Mashhad are superficial.

Abstract Introduction: Ensuring the clinical competencies of nurse anesthetists is an essential professional standard. The key and primary step in the assessment of nurse anesthesia educational programs is to understand the essential competencies from the perspective of anesthesia service providers in response to the community needs. This study aimed to determine the clinical competencies of nurse anesthetists for meeting the needs of the community.Materials and Methods: This descriptive survey was based on the classical Delphi method. The study was conducted in three stages. In the first stage, 25 questions were prepared by a non-systematic literature review. In the second and third stages, a list of clinical competencies for nurse anesthetists was determined. For assessing the content validity, two indices of content validity ratio and content validity index were calculated. Data were analyzed by SPSS software (version 16) using descriptive statistics and consensus validity. Results: After analyzing the data in the first stage, one item was removed from the 25 selected items, and 11 items were added to the initial checklist. The maximum and minimum coefficient of agreement was 100 and 0.54, respectively. The findings of the second stage showed that the percentage of agreement in 35 items was at least 70.7 and maximum 95.1. A competence from the education dimension was removed with a percentage of agreement of 0.59 and a total of 34 items were approved. Conclusions: This study determined the clinical competencies of nurse anesthetists. The development of clinical competencies for these nurses could be the starting point for understating, analyzing and planning in order to improve the quality of services provided.

Abstract Introduction: Since the year 2004, structured Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs with 25 credit points were each divided into five programs of 5 credit points which were shorter in duration. The aim of this study was to conduct a comparative study on the two programs, in terms of program success, relevance to professional needs, and participants’ satisfaction. Methods: This descriptive study was carried out on four programs with 25 credit points during the year 2003 and four programs with 5 credit points during the year 2004 in Golestan province. The tool used for this research was a questionnaire designed by the ministry of health for the evaluation of CME programs which were completed by the participants at the end of each session. The questions were arranged in three sections: the success of the programs in strengthening the previous information and presenting new scientific topics, the relevance of programs content with participant’s professional needs, and their satisfaction with the programs. The sample size for the three-day programs (25 credits) was 121 persons and for one-day programs (5 credits) was 64. Data analysis (descriptive analysis and Mann-Whitney test) was done using SPSS software. Results: One-day programs were considered as successful according to 76.9% of the participants, while 59.6% of participants rated the three-day programs as successful. Seventy five and nine percent of participants of one-day and 57.4% of three-day programs considered the contents relevant to their profes-sional needs. Seventy nine and seven percent of participants, in one-day and 66.2% in three-day programs were satisfied with the programs. There was a statistically significant difference between the success, relevance, and the satisfaction between one-day and three-day programs. Conclusion: The results of this research indicate that as a whole the success rate of 5-point CME programs was better than 25-point ones. This could be attributed to their better focus on subjects, shorter duration, and more ...
