    Abstract Herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) amplicon vectors are versatile and useful tools for transferring genes into cells that are capable of stimulating a specific immune response to their expressed antigens. In this work, two HSV-1-derived amplicon vectors were generated. One of these expressed the full-length glycoprotein D (gD) of bovine herpesvirus 1 while the second expressed the truncated form of gD (gDtr) which lacked the trans-membrane region. After evaluating gD expression in the infected cells, the ability of both vectors to induce a specific gD immune response was tested in BALB/c mice that were intramuscularly immunized. Specific serum antibody responses were detected in mice inoculated with both vectors, and the response against truncated gD was higher than the response against full-length gD. These results reinforce previous findings that HSV-1 amplicon vectors can potentially deliver antigens to animals and highlight the prospective use of these vectors for treating infectious bovine rhinotracheitis disease.

    Abstract Campylobacter (C.) fetus (epsilonproteobacteria) is an important veterinary pathogen. This species is currently divided into C. fetus subspecies (subsp.)fetus (Cff) and C. fetus subsp. venerealis (Cfv). Cfv is the causative agent of bovine genital Campylobacteriosis, an infectious disease that leads to severe reproductive problems in cattle worldwide. Cff is a more general pathogen that causes reproductive problems mainly in sheep although cattle can also be affected. Here we describe a multiplex PCR method to detect C. fetus and differentiate between subspecies in a single step. The assay was standardized using cultured strains and successfully used to analyze the abomasal liquid of aborted bovine fetuses without any pre-enrichment step. Results of our assay were completely consistent with those of traditional bacteriological diagnostic methods. Furthermore, the multiplex PCR technique we developed may be easily adopted by any molecular diagnostic laboratory as a complementary tool for detecting C. fetus subspecies and obtaining epidemiological information about abortion events in cattle.

    Abstract: El suero lácteo es el principal subproducto de la industria quesera. El suero líquido contiene 3.5-6.9% de MS y el concentrado, 18-24%. En base seca, el suero contiene cenizas, 8.8%; extracto etéreo, 2-3%; proteína bruta, 14-15% y lactosa, 70-80%. La ... ...

    Abstract El suero lácteo es el principal subproducto de la industria quesera. El suero líquido contiene 3.5-6.9% de MS y el concentrado, 18-24%. En base seca, el suero contiene cenizas, 8.8%; extracto etéreo, 2-3%; proteína bruta, 14-15% y lactosa, 70-80%. La digestibilidad rectal de la MO y MS es de 93 y 95% respectivamente. La lactosa es hidrolizada por la lactasa en lechones lactantes y destetados; en adultos se produce fermentación cecal de la lactosa, obteniendo ácidos grasos volátiles. La proteína tiene 95% de digestibilidad y 94% de valor biológico, aportando todos los aminoácidos esenciales. El aporte energético es de 3.5 Mcal de ED/kg de MS. La alimentación con suero tiene efectos negativos y positivos sobre el estado sanitario: aparición de diarreas y prolapsos, asociados al volumen y acidez de la ingesta y alta concentración de minerales, y una influencia favorable de la lactosa sobre la población de lactobacilos, con un efecto prebiótico especialmente en animales jóvenes. El nivel de inclusión recomendado de suero en la dieta es de 25-30% de la MS. El suero en polvo es recomendado para lechones lactantes y recién destetados. El rendimiento a la faena de cerdos alimentados con suero disminuye debido al mayor tamaño del intestino grueso, asociado a la fermentación de la lactosa. La grasa depositada tiene un mayor grado de saturación, por las características de los ácidos grasos lácteos. El suero de queso es un alimento de alto valor nutritivo recomendable como sustituto parcial de la ración balanceada para el ganado porcino.

    Abstract La producción de cerdos es un rubro tradicional en el Uruguay, existiendo cerdos en el 33% de los predios agropecuarios. En la mayoría de los casos es encarado como un rubro de autoconsumo o complementario de otras producciones a nivel familiar, siendo encarado con una finalidad comercial en aproximadamente 6 000 establecimientos. La producción comercial se ubica en las zonas sur, sureste y suroeste del país, asociada a una mayor concentración de la demanda y facilidad de acceso a las fuentes de alimento. El rodeo porcino está constituido por alrededor de 250 000 cabezas, predominando los animales de manto blanco, provenientes de híbridos comerciales o cruzamientos de los mismos con los cerdos de las razas tradicionales. La producción es destinada al mercado interno, del que cubre aproximadamente el 50%, siendo el resto abastecido por importaciones desde Brasil, que generan una fuerte competencia con la producción nacional. Se distinguen cuatro sistemas de producción porcina mayoritarios: cría familiar; ciclo completo con cría a campo y engorde en confinamiento; ciclo completo en confinamiento; terminadores con alimentos alternativos. El presente trabajo trata los aspectos concernientes a la producción porcina en Uruguay teniendo en cuenta las características de los productores, los sistemas de producción, las razas utilizadas y el mercado.
