Abstract Neurorehabilitation in patients suffering from motor deficits relies on relearning or re-adapting motor skills. Yet our understanding of motor learning is based mostly on results from one or two-dimensional experimental paradigms with highly confined movements. Since everyday movements are conducted in three-dimensional space, it is important to further our understanding about the effect that gravitational forces or perceptual anisotropy might or might not have on motor learning along all different dimensions relative to the body. Here we test how well existing concepts of motor learning generalize to movements in 3D. We ask how a subject's variability in movement planning and sensory perception influences motor adaptation along three different body axes. To extract variability and relate it to adaptation rate, we employed a novel hierarchical two-state space model using Bayesian modeling via Hamiltonian Monte Carlo procedures. Our results show that differences in adaptation rate occur between the coronal, sagittal and horizontal planes and can be explained by the Kalman gain, i.e., a statistically optimal solution integrating planning and sensory information weighted by the inverse of their variability. This indicates that optimal integration theory for error correction holds for 3D movements and explains adaptation rate variation between movements in different planes.

Abstract Abstract: People experiencing kinesiophobia are more likely to develop persistent disabilities and chronic pain. However, the impact of kinesiophobia on the motor system remains poorly understood. We investigated whether kinesiophobia could modulate shoulder pain-induced changes in (1) kinematic parameters and muscle activation during functional movement and (2) corticospinal excitability. Thirty healthy, pain-free subjects took part in the study. Shoulder, elbow, and finger kinematics, as well as electromyographic activity of the upper trapezius and anterior deltoid muscles, were recorded while subjects performed a pointing task before and during pain induced by capsaicin at the shoulder. Anterior deltoid cortical changes in excitability were assessed through the slope of transcranial magnetic stimulation input-output curves obtained before and during pain. Results revealed that pain reduced shoulder electromyographic activity and had a variable effect on finger kinematics, with individuals with higher kinesiophobia showing greater reduction in finger target traveled distance. Kinesiophobia scores were also correlated with the changes in deltoid corticospinal excitability, suggesting that the latter can influence motor activity as soon as the motor signal emerges. Taken together, these results suggest that pain and kinesiophobia interact with motor control adaptation.

Title translation Ten years of nucleic acid testing: lessons and prospects.
Abstract Nucleic acid testing has been routinely performed in all blood donations in France since July 1st 2001. This is the story of a controversial decision. "The unacceptable HIV risk" in the context of the early 2000s influenced the decision. The results achieved over these past 10 years are analyzed given the expected progress of this new screening tool for infectious agents in transfusion. They confirm the relevance of models used by experts in 2000. Out of 22.3 million donations over the period (2001-2009), 22 donations have been rejected because of nucleic acid testing positive for hepatitis C virus (n=11) and human immunodeficiency virus (n=11). Nucleic acid testing has contributed to improve the functioning of the transfusion chain activities in order to ensure the availability of blood products. In terms of reactivity against emerging infectious agents, its role in the West Nile virus (WNV) outbreak is exemplary, but it did not play a similar role in crises of the same order. ALT determination has been stopped thanks to nucleic acid testing. The risk of contamination of the method by amplification products has been confirmed and caution is still required. Nucleic acid testing is being maintained and reached a new milestone in 2010 with the implementation of a full automated system, meanwhile pool screening was given up and hepatitis B virus screening became widespread. Nucleic acid tests will probably be revised when all blood products are pathogen-inactivated.
