    Abstract An alternative for prevention and treatment for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is increasing the intake of bioactive compounds as omega-3. However, several countries as México do not consume regularly foods with high content of omega-3, mainly fish products due to cultural, social, and economic factors. Therefore, the addition of omega-3 in other food sources could contribute to completing the requirements established of these fatty acids. To evaluate the effect of the consumption of poultry products supplemented with omega-3 in healthy population, a phase 1, double blind randomized, controlled parallel-group trial was carried out. After 14 weeks, the supplemented group had an increase in HDL, reducing the atherogenic index. The supplementation with omega-3 in poultry products could contribute to a cardioprotective effect. It is necessary to complete studies with a higher evaluation period to determine the improvement in anthropometric and cardiovascular parameters.

    Abstract The genus Brucella, described by Meyer and Shaw in 1920, comprises bacterial pathogens of veterinary and public health relevance. For 36 years, the genus came to include three species that caused brucellosis in livestock and humans. In the second half of the 20th century, bacteriologists discovered five new species and several 'atypical' strains in domestic animals and wildlife. In 1990, the Brucella species were recognized as part of the Class Alphaproteobacteria, clustering with pathogens and endosymbionts of animals and plants such as Bartonella, Agrobacterium and Ochrobactrum; all bacteria that live in close association with eukaryotic cells. Comparisons with Alphaproteobacteria contributed to identify virulence factors and to establish evolutionary relationships. Brucella members have two circular chromosomes, are devoid of plasmids, and display close genetic relatedness. A proposal, asserting that all brucellae belong to a single species with several subspecies debated for over 70 years, was ultimately rejected in 2006 by the subcommittee of taxonomy, based on scientific, practical, and biosafety considerations. Following this, the nomenclature of having multiples Brucella species prevailed and defined according to their molecular characteristics, host preference, and virulence. The 100-year history of the genus corresponds to the chronicle of scientific efforts and the struggle for understanding brucellosis.

    Abstract Division of labor is central to the ecological success of social insects. Among foragers of the honey bee, specialization for collecting nectar or pollen correlates with their sensitivity to sucrose. So far, differences in gustatory perception have been mostly studied in bees returning to the hive, but not during foraging. Here, we showed that the phase of the foraging visit (i.e. beginning or end) interacts with foraging specialization (i.e. predisposition to collect pollen or nectar) to modulate sucrose and pollen sensitivity in foragers. In concordance with previous studies, pollen foragers presented higher sucrose responsiveness than nectar foragers at the end of the foraging visit. On the contrary, pollen foragers were less responsive than nectar foragers at the beginning of the visit. Consistently, free-flying foragers accepted less concentrated sucrose solution during pollen gathering than immediately after entering the hive. Pollen perception also changes throughout foraging, as pollen foragers captured at the beginning of the visit learned and retained memories better when they were conditioned with pollen + sucrose as reward than when we used sucrose alone. Altogether, our results support the idea that changes in foragers' perception throughout the foraging visit contributes to task specialization.

    Abstract This review explores the application of in vitro cell transformation assays (CTAs) as a screening platform to assess the carcinogenic potential of nanomaterials (NMs) resulting from continuously growing industrial production and use. The widespread application of NMs in various fields has raised concerns about their potential adverse effects, necessitating safety evaluations, particularly in long-term continuous exposure scenarios. CTAs present a realistic screening platform for known and emerging NMs by examining their resemblance to the hallmark of malignancy, including high proliferation rates, loss of contact inhibition, the gain of anchorage-independent growth, cellular invasion, dysregulation of the cell cycle, apoptosis resistance, and ability to form tumors in experimental animals. Through the deliberate transformation of cells via chronic NM exposure, researchers can investigate the tumorigenic properties of NMs and the underlying mechanisms of cancer development. This article examines NM-induced cell transformation studies, focusing on identifying existing knowledge gaps. Specifically, it explores the physicochemical properties of NMs, experimental models, assays, dose and time requirements for cell transformation, and the underlying mechanisms of malignancy. Our review aims to advance understanding in this field and identify areas for further investigation.

    Abstract Blackberry fruit processing generates residues comprised of peel, seeds, and pulp that are abundant in flavonoids, colorants, and organic acids. The objective of this study was to determine the organic acids, antioxidants, and dietary fiber content of blackberry residues and compare antioxidants and dietary fiber content of a prune-based commercial product. The ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP methodologies were used for antioxidant capacity. The blackberry residues exhibited a high amount of malic acid (5706.37 mg/100 g db), phenols (4016.43 mg GAE/100 g db), and anthocyanins content (364.53 mg/100 g db) compared with the commercial product. These compounds contributed to the antioxidant capacity (by ABTS) of both products but were 20 times higher in blackberry residues. The fruit residues were able to reduce iron (by FRAP) 4.4 times compared to the prune-based product. Total dietary fiber (44.26%) and functional properties as water retention capacity (2.94 g/g), swelling capacity (5.00 mL/g), and fat absorption capacity (1.98 mL/g) of blackberry residues were significantly higher than those of the commercial sample. The results demonstrated that, due to its antioxidant compounds and functional properties, the blackberry residue can be considered a source of components with potential benefit to human health.

    Abstract Recent advances in our understanding of T2 inflammation have revealed more diseases in which T2 inflammation is involved. Dupilumab is a recently developed monoclonal antibody that blocks signaling of IL-4 and IL-13, both of which are crucial cytokines in the T2 response. New possible indications are increasingly explored and include skin diseases, such as prurigo nodularis, nummular eczema, allergic contact dermatitis, chronic hand eczema, spontaneous chronic urticaria, bullous pemphigoid, alopecia areata, and Netherton syndrome, as well as respiratory diseases, such as allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, chronic eosinophilic pneumonia, and allergic rhinitis. In addition, eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, particularly eosinophilic esophagitis, and food allergy, are also research fields of interest. Here, we review published data and clinical trials examining the use of dupilumab in these disorders.

    Abstract Ultraviolet radiation as a germicide is widely used in the health field and even in domestic hygiene. Here, we propose an improvement in low-cost portable units of filtration for indoor air, which is based on ultraviolet radiation. In the current technology, to carry out an air filtration with a suspension of aerosols in which there is a likely concentration of pathogens, whether viral, bacterial or molds, the air is forced to pass as close as possible to the ionizing radiation source (near field). Since the optical mass is very small, the desired effect can be achieved in a considerably short time, deactivating the infective potential of these biological agents. The proposal of this work is the regulation of the flow or speed control of passage through these filters by passive elements instead of by electronic control systems. For this, two devices have been designed, simulated, and built, obtaining similar net pathogen inactivation rates under different flow rates. The passive flow control device has demonstrated higher performance in terms of flow rate and lower cost of production since they do not require electronics and are produced with fewer diodes. This passive device has also shown a lower projection of maintenance cost, lower energy consumption rate (higher efficiency), and longer projection of useful life.

    Abstract Compared to normal arc-related volcanic eruptions, the formation of a volcanic caldera is a relatively atypical event. During caldera formation a series of large volumes of magma are erupted, reducing the structural support for the rock above the magma chamber and creating a large depression at the surface called caldera. Los Humeros volcanic field (LHVF) represents one of the largest volcanic calderas in Mexico. It is located some 400 km from the trench at the eastern edge of the Trans Mexican Volcanic Belt where the depth to the Cocos slab is more than 300 km. In this study we employ high-resolution two-dimensional thermomechanical numerical simulations of magma intrusions and a horizontal tectonic strain rate to better understand the influence of crustal deformation for the formation of Los Humeros caldera. A minimum number of three thermal anomaly pulses of hydrated mantle material (with diameter of 15 km or more) and a regional strain rate of 7.927 × 10
