    Abstract Many emerging light-emitting diode (LED) applications require short-distance illumination. For that, we derive an exact formula of the illumination profile produced by Lambertian LEDs, in which all parameters are fundamental constants. Moreover, we propose a general, simple, but accurate mathematical model of the irradiance pattern, valid for Lambertian and non-Lambertian LEDs at short distances. This model provides the irradiance profile as a function of both the LED-target distance and the coordinates of every point on the irradiated surface. The model is formulated in terms of simple sigmoid functions, in which LED size and light flux are fundamental parameters. The accuracy of the irradiance pattern model is tested both with theory and with experimental measurements.

    Abstract This work presents a novel optical system for polarization image processing using geometric-phase (Pancharatnam-Berry) lenses. Such lenses are half-wave plates where the orientation of the fast (slow) axis follows a quadratic relation with the radial coordinate, and they present the same focal length but opposite sign for left and right circular polarizations. Therefore, they split an input collimated beam in a converging beam and a diverging beam with opposite circular polarizations. This coaxial polarization selectivity introduces a new degree of freedom in optical processing systems and makes it interesting for imaging and filtering applications that require polarization sensitivity. Here we profit from these properties to build an optical Fourier filter system with polarization sensitivity. A telescopic system is used to have access to two real Fourier transform planes, one for each circular polarization. A second symmetric optical system is used to recombine the two beams onto a single final image. As a result, polarization sensitive optical Fourier filtering can be applied, as demonstrated with simple bandpass filters.

    Abstract Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of balance disorders and the efficacy of dexamethasone in protecting patients undergoing cisplatin-based cancer treatment against vestibulototoxicity.
    Methods: This study was a randomized controlled phase IIIB clinical trial. The subjects participating in the clinical trial were patients with a neoplastic disease whose treatment protocol included cisplatin. The average dose of cisplatin was 444.87 mg (SD 235.2 mg). Treatment consisted of intratympanically administering dexamethasone via a passive diffusion device called Microwick (8 mg/24 h dose) from the start of treatment with cisplatin to 3 weeks after the last cycle. Patients were administered the medication to one ear, and the contralateral ear was used as the control. The treated ears were randomly chosen using a computer system (randomization). Vestibular system was evaluated by video head impulse test before each cisplatin cycle.
    Results: Thirty-four patients were recruited over a 2-year period at a reference tertiary hospital, of whom 11 were excluded. Forty-six ears were analyzed (23 treated and 23 control ears). Vestibular analysis presented no changes in the mean increase in the vestibulo-ocular response in all patients evaluated, both in treated and control ears. Both 8.69% infection complications during treatment and 34.8% permanent perforation at 6 months were detected after device removal.
    Conclusion: Ototoxicity related to cisplatin-based treatment does not affect the vestibular system. Long-term high-dose intratympanic dexamethasone treatment is safe for the vestibular system.

    Abstract The phase-shift, transmittance, and polarization properties of meta-atoms are investigated, motivated by their use as building blocks of metasurfaces used in metalenses, holograms, and beam shaping. We studied dielectric nanorod meta-atoms of several geometries, which included cylinders, triangles, squares, hexagons, octagons, and truncated cones. By analyzing light propagation through these meta-atoms for three different wavelengths (632.8, 545, and 50 nm), we show that the phase-shift introduced is independent of their cross-section shape, contrary to the expected behavior. Additionally, we show that the polarization response is independent of the shape and that the transmittance is partially shape-independent. We identify a novel dependence of phase-shift on the effective cross-sectional area of meta-atoms. These meta-atom optical properties are independent of its shape if its geometry has a C3 or larger rotational symmetry. This optical invariance has significant implications for the topological optimization of flat optics.

    Abstract The European red mite Panonychus ulmi (Koch) is widely distributed and it can severely affect pome fruit crops, particularly apple. Pest outbreaks are related to an overuse of non-selective pesticide treatments that lead to the development of resistance and the absence of natural enemies in the orchard. A key aspect to optimize the use of pesticide treatments in the context of IPM is to increase the knowledge on the biology and ecology of the pest to better predict population dynamics and outbreaks. For the European red mite, knowledge on the conditions that lead to diapause breaking by winter eggs is essential to model population dynamics. To increase this knowledge, winter eggs were collected during field surveys in northen Spain during three years and egg hatching was monitored under controlled temperature and photoperiod conditions in the laboratory.     Abstract During the COVID-19 pandemic, the world's healthcare systems were extremely strained. Intensive care units were stretched to capacity and healthcare facilities were forced to set up spaces to care for critically ill patients. Professionals were required to work in strenuous conditions, completely disrupting their work routines.In this scenario, hand hygiene and the use of gloves by healthcare professionals became a critical point of transmission risk.The results of the ENVIN study in 2020 and 2021, corresponding to the pandemic period, showed worrying data on the increase in infection rates, with rates rising by 250% at the worst moments of the pandemic. This suggested that excessive risk situations were occurring for the patient. Any preventive strategy must place correct hand hygiene and proper use of gloves among its priority objectives. For this reason, the Project Zero Advisory Board made a series of adaptations and recommendations based on available evidence and expert opinion related to hand hygiene and glove use during the pandemic situation to promote best practice in extreme situations. This article reviews the key aspects of hand hygiene as part of the WHO safety strategy, the main barriers to compliance and the main adaptations proposed by the Advisory Board of the Zero projects.
