Method: A baccalaureate nursing health assessment course was redesigned in mastery learning to include detailed rubrics, faculty exemplar videos, and laboratory time for practice. Student-produced physical assessment videos served as formative assessments for each body system.
Results: Six students did not reach the assigned mastery level on one of the formative assessments, allowing for quick identification and remediation. All of the students passed the end-of-course physical assessment examination, meeting the goal of the course redesign.
Conclusion: Mastery Learning Theory allowed all students to practice skills, receive feedback, and gain confidence to master physical assessment.

Abstract Anti-Blackness and heteronormativity are the driving forces that determine access to reproductive healthcare and services in the United States, and the rate of Black birthing-related deaths continue to skyrocket. Still, there is a dearth of literature that includes the reproductive experiences of Black birthing people and their interactions with the healthcare system. This current study builds power with 10 Black Queer birthing people (or Partners) by centering on their gestation-based storytelling within discourse about reproduction. By blending these Partners' self-examination of their lived experiences with gestation with health research, Black feminism, and researcher interpretation of their stories, this study reveals the unparalleled truths of Black Queer reproduction. Six thematic areas within the healthcare system as experienced by Partners are explored. Additionally, through this disruptive approach, this study identifies the lived and material needs that necessitate reproductive justice for all.

Abstract Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM), or spread of cancer to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-filled space surrounding the central nervous system, is a fatal complication of cancer. Entry into this space poses an anatomical challenge for cancer cells; movement of cells between the blood and CSF is tightly regulated by the blood-CSF barriers. Anatomical understanding of the leptomeninges provides a roadmap of corridors for cancer entry. This Review describes the anatomy of the leptomeninges and routes of cancer spread to the CSF. Granular understanding of LM by route of entry may inform strategies for novel diagnostic and preventive strategies as well as therapies.

Abstract Surgically treated intracranial infections are among the common disease entities seen in neurosurgical practice. Several microbiological agents such as bacteria and fungi have been identified as responsible for intracranial infection. It affects all age groups, though microbial agents and risk factors vary with age. Presentation is non-specific and it requires a high index of suspicion, especially with a background febrile illness such as in the setting of poorly-treated meningitis and immunosuppressive conditions such as retroviral illness. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is the diagnostic tool of choice; it helps to confirm the diagnosis and exclude other ring-enhancing lesions such as glioblastoma and metastatic brain tumours. Treatment involves medical and/or surgical treatment with clear indications. Surgical treatment includes the drainage of abscess via a twist drill or burrhole craniostomy, and craniotomy for recurrent cases. The advances recorded in the evolution of antibiotics and neuroimaging have helped to improve the outcomes of these patients with intracranial infection.

Abstract Purpose: The objective was to determine the efficacy of intraoperative vancomycin powder in preventing SSIs in neurological surgeries.
Methods: A prospective randomized controlled study of patients who had clean cranial and non-implant spine surgeries at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Nigeria from February 1, 2021 to January 31, 2022. Patients were randomized into two groups. Group A patients had prophylactic intraoperative vancomycin powder applied to the surgical bed before wound closure while group B patients did not. Patients in both groups were followed up for 30 days post-operatively for evidence of SSI. The occurrence of SSIs was determined using clinical and laboratory parameters. Baseline characteristics, operative details, rates of wound infection, and microbiological data for each case were recorded. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Scientific Solution (SPSS) version 23 software.
Results: Forty-two patients were randomized into 2 groups of 21 patients each. The age range of the patients was 20 to 80 years. The majority of the patients were males (32 out of 42). The mean age of patients in group A was 48.05 ± 17.03 years, while group B had a mean age of 45.95 ± 19.14 years. The mean Body Mass Index of patients in groups A and B were 23.92 ± 5.21 and 23.21 ± 3.99 respectively. Seven out of 21 patients (33.3 %) in the control group ( group B) had superficial SSIs while no patient in the experimental group had SSI, p-value < 0.05. The organisms cultured were Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus.
Conclusion: Intraoperative vancomycin powder was effective in reducing the rate of SSIs following neurological surgeries and without adverse drug reactions.
