Abstract The aim of this Research Topic is to discuss the state of the art on the use of Information-based methods in the analysis of neuroimaging data. Information-based methods, typically built as extensions of the Shannon Entropy, are at the basis of model-free approaches which, being based on probability distributions rather than on specific expectations, can account for all possible non-linearities present in the data in a model-independent fashion.Mutual Information-like methods can also be applied on interacting dynamical variables described by time-series, thus addressing the uncertainty reduction (or information) in one variable by conditioning on another set of variables. In the last years, different Information-based methods have been shown to be flexible and powerful tools to analyze neuroimaging data, with a wide range of different methodologies, including formulations-based on bivariate vs multivariate representations, frequency vs time domains, etc.-

Apart from methodological issues, the information bit as a common unit represents a convenient way to open the road for comparison and integration between different measurements of neuroimaging data in three complementary contexts: Structural Connectivity, Dynamical (Functional and Effective) Connectivity, and Modelling of brain activity. Applications are ubiquitous, starting from resting state in healthy subjects to modulations of consciousness and other aspects of pathophysiology.Mutual Information-based methods have provided new insights about common-principles in brain organization, showing the existence of an active default network when the brain is at rest. It is not clear, however, how this default network is generated, the different modules are intra-interacting, or disappearing in the presence of stimulation. Some of these open-questions at the functional level might find their mechanisms on their structural correlates.-

A key question is the link between structure and function and the use of structural priors for the understanding of the functional connectivity measures. As effective connectivity is concerned, recently a common framework has been proposed for Transfer Entropy and Granger Causality, a well-established methodology originally based on autoregressive models. This framework can open the way to new theories and applications. This Research Topic brings together contributions from researchers from different backgrounds which are either developing new approaches, or applying existing methodologies to new data, and we hope it will set the basis for discussing the development and validation of new Information-based methodologies for the understanding of brain structure, function, and dynamics

Abstract Embodiment is a complex concept related with the subjective perception of an object as it belongs to the own body. In general, this construct has been evaluated by means of questionnaires but validation studies in other cultures and limitations related with barriers of language received little attention. The purpose of the present investigation was twofold: to validate the factorial structure of Embodiment Questionnaire (EQ) and to construct a pictographic scale (PAE) to measure embodiment without relapse verbal representations. In a first experiment, one hundred and thirty-six participants underwent a Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) procedure following both congruent and incongruent (control) visuo-tactile stimulations. Then, they evaluated embodiment illusion in EQ using a Likert scale to rate their agreement or disagreement with 27 statements and with a pictographic scale designed to assess their subjective experience of the illusion. Principal components analysis in EQ scores identified four components that emerged in both conditions: Embodiment, Disembodiment, Affect and Deafference. PAE scale was highly correlated with embodiment factor and can differentiate between conditions. In a second experiment, thirty participants underwent the RHI procedure, and they were assessed using PAE and proprioceptive drift. Results indicates a high positive correlation between PAE and post-illusion drift score. These results provide evidence about the consistency of the factorial structure of EQ across cultures and we also provide a new pictographic tool that allows quick measurement of embodiment overcoming language barriers.

Abstract We propose and develop a new algorithm for trading wind energy in electricity markets, within an online learning and optimization framework. In particular, we combine a component-wise adaptive variant of the gradient descent algorithm with recent advances in the feature-driven newsvendor model. This results in an online offering approach capable of leveraging data-rich environments, while adapting to the nonstationary characteristics of energy generation and electricity markets, also with a minimal computational burden. The performance of our approach is analyzed based on several numerical experiments, showing both better adaptability to nonstationary uncertain parameters and significant economic gains.

Abstract A 22-year-old woman with a history of surgically treated pelvic teratoma and solid liver lesion in the extension study. Radiological follow-up was decided. This liver lesion experienced a progressive increase in size, reaching 6 cm. Contrast-enhanced liver MRI was performed, revealing a heterogeneous mass in the right hepatic lobe with non-hepatocyte-like behaviour. With this information, the following entities were ruled out: haemangioma, adenoma, hepatocarcinoma and focal nodular hyperplasia. Given that it could be a teratoma metastasis, a tumour of any other origin or a non-tumoral lesion with no hepatocyte component, it was decided to perform a 2-[18F]FDG PET/CT scan. It showed the liver mass with notable glycolytic hypermetabolism, suggestive of malignancy. In a multidisciplinary committee, it was decided to perform a laparoscopic right hepatectomy. Pathological examination revealed a benign hepatocytic lesion compatible with a steatotic adenoma.

Abstract During the last decades macroecology has identified broad-scale patterns of abundances and diversity of microbial communities and put forward some potential explanations for them. However, these advances are not paralleled by a full understanding of the dynamical processes behind them. In particular, abundance fluctuations of different species are found to be correlated, both across time and across communities in metagenomic samples. Reproducing such correlations through appropriate population models remains an open challenge. The present paper tackles this problem and points to sparse species interactions as a necessary mechanism to account for them. Specifically, we discuss several possibilities to include interactions in population models and recognize Lotka-Volterra constants as a successful ansatz. For this, we design a Bayesian inference algorithm to extract sets of interaction constants able to reproduce empirical probability distributions of pairwise correlations for diverse biomes. Importantly, the inferred models still reproduce well-known single-species macroecological patterns concerning abundance fluctuations across both species and communities. Endorsed by the agreement with the empirically observed phenomenology, our analyses provide insights on the properties of the networks of microbial interactions, revealing that sparsity is a crucial feature.
