Abstract Purpose — This study aims to estimate the impact of four key variables - the average length of schooling, the disaster risk index, the labor force participation rate, and the construction cost index - on the percentage of the population living in poverty. Method — This research is a quantitative study that utilizes secondary data sourced from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of West Sumatera and Inariks BNPB. It primarily focuses on the variable of poverty. The analytical approach adopted in this study is panel data analysis, which integrates both cross-sectional and time series data. The cross-sectional aspect of the research encompasses 19 regencies/cities within the West Sumatera Province, and the time series data extends from 2017 to 2022. All data processing and analysis are conducted using Eviews 10 software. Result — The research findings suggest that the Fixed Effects Model (FEM) is the most effective approach for analyzing regression models. The estimated results reveal that both the average length of schooling and the labor force participation rate negatively impact the percentage of the impoverished population. In contrast, the disaster risk index and the construction cost index appear to have no influence on the impoverished population percentage. Novelty — This research introduces a novel dimension to the study of poverty, focusing on disaster risk and construction factors that have not been previously explored in earlier studies.

Abstract With the emergence of economic globalisation, HR executives strive to provide a fairer working environment as there is an unprecedented shift of increased participation of people with different demographic backgrounds, genders and belief systems at workplaces around the globe. Simultaneously, there has been a tremendous rise in the occurrences of abusive leadership behaviours leading to increased turnover ratios. Hence, this study aims to investigate the effects of abusive leadership and diversity management practices on turnover intention. This study data has been collected from the employees of pharmaceutical companies based in Karachi, Pakistan using a non- probability purposive sampling technique. Data was taken from (n = 403) participants. The results show a significant negative relationship between diversity management and turnover intention and a significant positive relationship between abusive leadership and turnover intention. The results also indicate that job satisfaction mediates the relationship of both diversity management and abusive leadership with turnover intention. The study emphasises that organisations should consciously channel their resources effectively into creating an all-inclusive environment to cater the psychological needs of a diverse workforce. The study also implicated that organisational leadership should pay special attention to ensure that they treat their subordinates fairly across the board, as the behaviour of the leaders has far-reaching effects on the performance, productivity and psychological well-being of the employees.

Abstract Purpose — This research aims to estimate the impact of the education index, health index, poverty alleviation budget, and purchasing power on the number of impoverished people. Method — This study employs panel data regression, utilizing samples from 35 regencies/cities in Central Java Province with annual data spanning from 2016 to 2022. The data is processed using Eviews 10 software. Result — By using the Fixed Effects Model (FEM) approach, we found that the education index and health index have a positive impact on reducing the number of impoverished people, while the poverty alleviation budget and purchasing power have a negative impact on the number of impoverished people. Novelty — This research adds value by focusing on purchasing power and poverty alleviation budgets, which have been less explored in previous studies. By delving into these aspects, the research provides a deeper understanding of the poverty dynamics in Central Java Province, offering new insights and more targeted solutions to effectively address poverty-related issues.

Abstract Riparian topographical features can drive a suite of ecological indicators (EIs) that shape the river ecosystem. The mechanisms that EIs reflect provide several ecosystem services. We know little about the responses of EIs (indicators of plant cover, regeneration, exotics, habitat, erosion, and stressors) to the changing stream-channel width, riparian width, and elevation of the lengthy drawdown zones (upstream, midstream, and downstream) of long rivers. We have discovered that changing topographical characteristics affect riparian buffer areas differently by using a rapid field-based method with 297 transects in inundated regions along the Yangtze River and other 36 linked tributaries in China. Changing stream-channel widths was most effective on downstream EIs and the least effective at midstream. The exotic parameters were the most affected (with a range of −0.36 < r < 0.401) by stream-channel widths, as determined using Pearson correlation (p < 0.05). In contrast, the changing riparian width had the uppermost impact on the upstream EIs and the lowermost impact downstream; riparian width had the most significant impact on habitat parameters (with r ≤ 0.787). The elevation followed the riparian width pattern and was negatively associated with habitat and exotics (r ≤ −0.645 and r ≤ −0.594) and positively correlated with regeneration (r ≤ 0.569). These results reaffirm the imperative need for studies on regionally dependent riparian areas maintained under the same management strategies regardless of their topographical features. Future policies should be formulated to enhance ecosystem service provision, promoting the sustainable use of extensive river ecosystems while considering EIs. Additionally, these future policies should acknowledge drawdown zone factors within the same river network. Furthermore, additional measures are imperative to conserve topographical features and prevent further destruction.

Abstract A China-Japan grim relationship has been marked by conflicts, and other political security tensions for a long time. One of which is the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands dispute occurring since 2012, it will become an issue for both countries that is difficult to be ironed out. The dispute has occurred since the Japanese government nationalized the islets, which China also claimed. It led to both countries' expansion of military power and a clash in East Asia. This essay aims to analyze how Japan perceives China by focusing on the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands dispute. This article argues Japan perceives China as a threat due to China’s military penetration over Diaoyu/Senkaku islands leading to a strategic distrust of Japan and its uncertain behavior as an international relations actor led to a moral distrust of Japan. This phenomenon will likely raise the tension in the region and enhance the escalation possibility due to the security dilemma effect.

Abstract Though the coming of some tasawuf schools is unavoidable, the dichotomy of these schools namely sunni and falsafi is somehow too far. This dichotomy is at its turn will declare that tasawuf sunni is in the correct path of shari’a, while tasawuf falsafi is not. One of the ambitious sufi’s Imam who made this dichotomy popular is Ahmad Sirhindi. The systematic critic of Ahmad Sirhindi towards tasawuf falsafi gives big impact in the future to the spreading of this binary view. Therefore, to review this problematic classification of tasawuf, the reinterpretation of Ahmad Sirhindi’s argument is needed. This article will explain the dichotomy of tasawuf based on the view of Ahmad Sirhindi and the critical comments on this idea.

Abstract Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) projected as a dynamic solution for socio-economic development are extensively utilized in the developing countries. Pakistan has witnessed a high growth of ICTs use in the last decade. This review addresses the question: How ICTs are potentially aiding the development process in Pakistan. While doing so, it reviews the key literature on Information and Communication Technologies 4 Development (ICT4D) and Information Systems (IS). The inclusive review of literature is undertaken for identifying different aspects and roles played by ICTs in social and economic development universally with a specific emphasis on Pakistan. The key finding of this review is that ICTs are enabling pivotal transformations in Pakistan by becoming a key element in economic and social development. ICTs are advancing society by improving access of millions of people to many amenities such as financial and health in Pakistan. A set of two case studies from the field of Mobile Money, and Telemedicine are used to reinforce these claims. Given the poor socio-economic and development indicators of Pakistan, a way forward is proposed. This study is an initial attempt to review the potentials as well as different roles played by ICT-led initiatives in the socio-economic development of Pakistan. It is expected to form the basis for the further investigations with regards to ICT4D projects in Pakistan. The study is primarily based on qualitative data to enforce its claims. Unfortunately, primary data on the topic is either non-existent or cannot be accessed when it comes to Pakistan.

Abstract Environmental illiteracy threatens the functioning mechanisms of ecological networks worldwide, yet many people remain dubious about their existence. The knowledge deficit model suggests that giving the public (local people and government personnel) additional information would alleviate distrust. There is limited evidence indicating that environmental literacy metrics (ELMs) influence ecological network indicators (ENIs) such as plant cover, habitat, exotics, regeneration, erosion, and stressors throughout the drawdown zone (upstream, midstream, and downstream) within dams and reservoirs, despite widespread implementation to enhance riparian zone conservation. This study tackles this knowledge gap by using multivariate statistical methods to assess ENIs on the covered area of 58,000 km2 in 327 transects through a field-based approach inside China's Three Gorges Reservoir area (TGRA) in 2019. The bar graph results showed the largest lack of information about ELMs (e.g., knowledge, attitude, and behavior) from the general populace, and it had the biggest effect on the plant cover in the midstream and the least impact on regeneration in the upstream. The ELMs of local people influenced the ENIs most within the downstream, with coefficients of Pearson correlation in the range of −0.67 < r < 0.98. However, the ELMs (knowledge and behavior) of government personnel showed the greatest correlations with ENIs (−0.41 < r < 0.74) in the midstream, while attitude towards downstream. In comparison among ENIs, vegetation cover, grass exotics, gullying, longitudinal continuity, and farming systems were all-important ENIs within the TGRA. ENIs and ELMs varied substantially for each section of the drawdown zone, according to hierarchical approaches. These results educate decision-makers about the spatial variations in ENIs of riparian regions in dams and reservoirs, which need location-based initiatives to raise inclusive impact awareness among the Chinese public.
