Abstract Growing demand for activated carbon as an efficient and cost effective means of treating environmental pollution necessitates the economical production of good quality activated carbon. It is possible if it is done using low cost precursor materials and economical production methods. In the present study, two types of activated carbon were produced from Acacia etbaica tree branches while employing phosphoric acid as an activating agent. The first sample underwent carbonization by microwave irradiation (AC-MWI), while the second sample was carbonised in a furnace (AC-CA). Characterization of the formed activated carbon samples was executed by proximate and ultimate analysis adopting standard ASTM procedures. In addition to the elemental analysis, hardness, bulk density, pH, moisture and ash content, surface morphology, BET specific surface area, pore volume, volatile matter, fixed carbon, and iodine number were determined. Characteristics of both activated carbon samples were compared with the characteristics of activated carbon available in the literature and activated carbon available commercially in the market. The comparison revealed that the characteristics of the produced activated carbon samples was well comparable with the activated carbons produced from other species of Acacia tree and activated carbon available commercially. Results showed that the produced activated carbon demonstrated high activation efficiency of 39.8% and 48.7% for AC-CA and AC-MWI, respectively. Furthermore, AC-MWI has a BET specific surface area higher than that of AC-CA (1065 m2/g and 773 m2/g respectively). It was found that the BET specific surface area and pore volume of AC-MWI was higher by 37.7% and 12.7%, respectively, as compared to the values acquired for AC-CA. Additionally, activated carbon could be produced by microwave irradiation in about 48% less time as compared to traditional low temperature heating. The adsorption study of produced the activated carbon was performed utilising methylene blue (MB) as a contaminant, ...

Abstract In the present work, activated carbon was produced from Acacia Tortilis tree bark, utilizing phosphoric acid chemical activation, and microwave irradiation (AC-MWI). Activated carbon was also produce by conventional phosphoric acid chemical activation and low temperature carbonization (AC-CA). Characterization of produced activated carbons performed by proximate analysis adopting ASTM standard procedures. BET-specific surface area, total ash content, bulk density, moisture content, pH, pore volume and iodine number were determined. Comparison of characteristics for both carbon, with the characteristics of AC available in the literature and commercially available in the market was performed. Comparison showed that activated carbon produced from Acacia Tortilis tree bark is well comparable with the reported characteristics of AC in literature and commercially available in market. It was found that AC-MWI has higher BET-specific surface area than AC-CA (836 m2/g and 687 m2/g respectively). Results depict that there is an increase of 22.3% in microspores component and 21.7% BET- specific surface area obtained in AC-MWI as compared to AC-CA. Similarly, the corresponding pore volume obtained (4.97 cm3/g and 4.07 cm3/g respectively) demonstrating better values as compared to the commercial ACs (<1 cm3/g). Additionally, it was found that AC can be produced by microwave irradiation in about 48.5% less time when compared to conventional low temperature heating. The adsorption study of produced ACs was performed using methylene blue as a contaminant. Study showed that MB removal rate initially increased with increase in contact time, which decreased with time until steady state was reached. Adsorption data of MB was fitted to Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin adsorption isotherm models. All models show reasonable correlation, however, Freundlich isotherm is best to describe the MB adsorption on AC-MWI based on correlation coefficient R2 value (0.9985). The results revealed the feasibility of microwave heating for ...

Abstract Abstract This study incorporated the index decomposition analysis to drive the GHGs emissions intensity and separate the impact into true efficiency and structural transformation of economic activities on GHGs emissions. The global perspective is investigated in three aspects; (i) global groups of countries regarding income level, (ii) global countries bifurcated into geo-political regions and, (iii) hundred countries are taken to perform individual country level analysis, by taking 20 years (2000–2019) data. The hundred countries are ranked regarding GHGs intensity, efficiency and economic activities with respect to (i) for the latest year performance, (ii) twenty years average performance and, (iii) annual average reduction of GHGs emissions, comparable with base year 2000. Income-based countries groups explicate the improvement of GHGs intensity for HIC only and the economic transformation contributed to it. Efficiency index for all income groups while economic activities of LMIC, MIC and UMIC deteriorated the GHGs emissions. Global geo-political regions explicate the mixed pattern of GHGs intensity. Efficiency index is best for Azerbaijan and least for Uzbekistan. While ranking average GHGs emission reduction countries; Zimbabwe is the best and Qatar is the last country in the intensity list.

Abstract This article attempts to introduce a simple and robust way for the classification of soft magnetic material by using multivariate statistics. The six magnetic properties including coercive magnetic field, relative magnetic permeability, electrical resistivity magnetic inductions, i.e., remanence and saturation along with Curie temperature are used for the classification of 16 soft magnetic materials. Descriptive statistics have been used for defining the prioritization order of the mentioned magnetic characteristics with coercive magnetic field and Curie temperature as the most and least important characteristics for classification of soft magnetic material. Moreover, it has also justified the usage of cluster analysis and principal component analysis for classifying the enlisted materials. After descriptive statistics, cluster analysis is used for classification of materials into four groups, i.e., excellent, good, fair and poor while defining the prioritization order of materials on a relative scale. Principal component analysis reveals that the relative permeability is responsible for defining 99.69% of total variance and is also negatively correlated with the coercive magnetic field. Therefore, these two characteristics are considered the responsible factors for categorically placing the enlisted materials into four clusters. Furthermore, principal component analysis also helps in figuring out the fact that a combined influential consequence of relative permeability, coercive magnetic field, electrical resistivity and critical temperature are responsible for defining prioritization ordering of materials within the clusters. The material’s suitability index is identified while making use of adjacency and decision matrices obtained from material assessment graph and relative importance of magnetic properties, respectively. Afterward this material suitability index is used to rank the enlisted materials based on selected attributes. According to the suitability index, the best choice among enlisted soft ...
