Soil is an important but often neglected element of the climate system. It is the second largest carbon store, or ‘sink’, after the oceans. Despite being a fundamental resource that supports all kinds of life on Earth, concerns related to soil are often not included as an important environmental issue. Climate changes put soil under pressure. The increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere may cause the microbes in the soil to work faster to break down organic matter, potentially releasing even more carbon dioxide. The soil moisture content is being constantly affected by rising temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns and future projections show that this may continue. This book presents current environmental issues and their remedies for soil which are mainly based on soil degradation, soil pollution and the effect of climate change on the soil.^

Adding xenobiotic chemicals or other alterations in the natural soil environment for agricultural, industrial or urban purposes result in a decline in the soil quality due to improper use or poor management, which is a serious environmental problem. The book is divided into five parts - soil science, soil physics, soil chemistry, soil biology and soil environment. The first part “Soil Science” serves as the introduction to the book and discusses some common topics such as soil formation, mineralogy, taxonomy, quality and analytical techniques. The second part “Soil Physics” is mainly concerned with the physical properties and processes of soil and their association with effects on air, water and temperature.^

Abstract This book highlights recent developments of organic and inorganic nanomedicine that play a major role in anti-angiogenic cancer therapy. In addition, the authors present examples of nanomedicine based anti-angiogenic agents and their applications in cancer therapy. Angiogenesis is a pathophysiological phenomenon that modulates cell proliferation and cell migration and plays important roles in cancer. Anti-angiogenic nanotherapies have gained immense attention in recent times as alternative cost-effective therapies that opened a new dimension in cancer theranostics. Further the challenges of the anti-angiogenic nanotherapies and possible future perspective are detailed.

Abstract We study the effects of noise cross correlations on the steady states of driven, nonequilibrium systems, which are described by two stochastically driven dynamical variables, in one dimension. We use a well-known stochastically driven coupled model with two dynamical variables, where one of the variables is autonomous, being independent of the other, whereas the second one depends explicitly on the former. Introducing cross correlations of the two noises in the two dynamical equations, we show that depending upon the details of the nonlinear coupling between the dynamical fields, such cross correlations can induce instabilities in the models that are otherwise stable in the absence of any cross correlations. We argue that this is reminiscent of the roughening transition found in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in dimensions greater than two. Phenomenological implications of our results are discussed.

Abstract The availability and accessibility of safe and effective drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics are essential to reducing the immense global burden of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). National regulatory authorities, such as the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), play an essential role in this effort to ensure access to safe and effective medical products by working within a set of legal frameworks and regulatory functions. However, medical product development for NTDs remains neglected, as combating NTDs is not a viable commercial market for pharmaceutical companies. To spur research and development (R&D) of NTD products, the US government has authorized various programs and policies to engage pharmaceutical companies, many of which provide FDA with the legal authority to implement NTD programs and pathways. Thus, this review provides a clear overview of the various regulatory pathways and programs employed by the FDA to increase the availability of NTD drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics. The review assesses the available information on various regulatory considerations and their impact on NTD product development as a first step in estimating the importance of such programs. Next, findings related to currently approved NTD products through these programs are discussed. Lastly, gaps in NTD R&D are identified and suggestions on how to address these are presented. The available data shows that while such incentive programs are factored into companies' decisions to pursue NTD R&D, approved products for NTDs remains vastly insufficient. Most approved products that utilize these NTD regulatory pathways and programs are overwhelmingly for tuberculosis and malaria-both of which are not considered NTDs by the World Health Organization (WHO). Dedicated efforts are needed to facilitate and accelerate NTD product including employing multiple incentive programs, regular assessment of such programs, and leveraging on public-private partnerships.
